LSU Football: How Ed Orgeron Outsmarted College Football (2019)

LSU Football in 2019 versus LSU Football in 2017 feels like comparing entities from two different worlds. Ed Orgeron took over following the firing of Les Miles to an extremely polarized reaction, both locally and nationally. Somehow after a surprise run to the Fiesta Bowl and a 10-win season despite one of the nation's toughest schedules Orgeron made the decision to turn LSU Tigers Football inside out with the hiring of Joe Brady and the embracing of an entirely new offensive philosophy. The man many laughed at then is running circles around other far more experienced and seasoned coaches now in terms of national perception. On Late Kick Live #178 we discussed how the transformation took place and how it will impact other programs. He takes advantage of their hubris, he appears to be dimwitted, he appears to be a loveable muck. Kinda like a python, and a rabbit, the rabbit thinks the python is slow, it slithers slowly, and when it's at striking distance, the rabbit finds out how fast the python really is, and then it's too late for the rabbit.

@@seandickson4915 I was unenthusiastic about it when they hired coach O, and I've never felt so validated in an opinion than when he stood on Matt Canada and lost to Troy... But, it seems that was a one time mistake, and things are turning in a good direction. Ensminger is my only concern now. He has coached as OC against Saban 3 times and never scored a point.... strange hire

Orgeron knew from the beginning that the LSU offense had to be modernized, which is why he brought in Matt Canada as OC. He also had enough sense to realize Canada was not the answer and eventually did find the perfect fit in Brady.

We here at USC knew that Ed was the guy. Ed was always the guy. He built some great DL's at USC, fired up the defense, and fired up the team. He was the glue that kept it all together. A tremendous recruiter also. We had stud defenders lined up to come play for Coach O. Biggest mistake ever at USC was not giving O the job. Now we're stuck with Helton. What a tragedy.

@RJ Maddawg Dude. Your history lesson is just that. History. Low 20s-mid30s is what ksu, ttu, iowa state put on people. Ou, texas, osu, (some years ttu) throw 50 at the scoreboard. You are playing the ol "we got a better running back and line so well just shove it down your throat" ball. You see how well that worked out for bama vs clemson last year. Whoops. Was that a sore spot? That "prolific" georgia offense got DESYROYED by Texas last year. What you dont understand, is if you score in a minute (or 3-out in a minute)...you get the ball like 15 times each a game. You guys are just playin gramps ball over there. And doing that, will not prepare you for the clemsons/Ous/Texas'(pre 2012 and recently)/and now atms and lsus of the world. But we will still line up and punch you in the mouth. See, you are saying "my way is best, look at the stats". Which, is exactly what I am also saying. Except we can play a slow game ...can you play a fast one? You are living in the past, my friend. Edit: furthermore, you made my point with urban meyer and spurrier. Both bought in to at least a PART of the spread system. See, were saying the same thing. You just dont understand my point. I fully understand yours. Cheers.

How can you not like a coach like that and brought a proud program back to national prominence. Kudos to Clemson for giving him time to build because it wasn't overnight he's been there since 09 and got embarrassed a few times especially that 2011 Orange Bowl by WVU 70-35 .

Great commentary Josh! This is the first vid of yours that I've watched, and I was really impressed. As my poor Huskers have struggled from coach to coach, Ed Orgeron was a potential hire that I was VERY high on. The problems that you point out with Harbaugh sounded eerily reminiscent of Bo Pelini's struggles and now I find myself applying the same metric in questioning Scott Frost's tribulations this year. He's coached brilliantly at the assistant coach level and while his Ol Miss stint didn't work, he learned a lot from it. With this mastery, Coach O has worked ahead of the curve and has utilized his network connections from all his stops to create this Tiger juggernaut. Oh, yeah and last Saturday night, the Tigers did a Bama beat down and won 46-41. There were many of us in LA who knew Coach O would be a great hire and turn the program around. U had thought that but what you do not know and most every one else does not. Most everyone does not do their homework. Alot of coaches fail their first time on a big job being a head coach or not that good. Coach bill belichick made one post season in browns head coach and was fired after a few seasons look it up. Coach Saban was not that good being a defense coordinator in NFL look it up he was DC at cleaveland browns under his buddy bil belichick a head coach his first job. Look it up. He was head coach at Toledo, sabans next head coach gig was Michigan State, he was not that good. Look it up mediocre. Coach Pete Carrol was a horrible head coach in NFL his first time around look him up. Lane kiffen had bad experiences or bad exits every where he went. Lots people questioned Nick saban hire of Lane kiffen. Kiffen did a great job at bama but had a bad exit at bama. Saban does his home work on his new hires. Coach Pete Carrol told Orgeron it takes a fail to make a good job your next time around. Ed Orgeron is trying to stay one step ahead and do his home work on the next hire. I'm sure not everyone is perfect at their first big job, got do horrible and make it really count that next job when get a chance. Ed really wants this job for a long time as his dream job.

He's not some super genius that outsmarted everyone, he's a hard worker and has learned the hard way (see Ole Miss) how not to coach a team and the good way (Pete Carroll at USC). He puts LSU first and his pride last because he loves LSU that much. He knows what he does best... lead men... both coordinators run their show (obviously subject to his satisfaction... see Matt Canada). He also has the one characteristic all successful coaches have... he is relentless. It's been a long hard road for CEO, but he has fought his way to where he is today and that fight is reflected in our Tiger football team.

A great leader does the things you mentioned. I’ve worked for both. Micro managers 99.9% of the time fail. The ones who know how to hire the right people with the right skill set: delegate, then they “step out of the way.” They are the wise leaders. Those who have been hired by said person who in turn are allowed to do their job feel respected. This makes for a successful team wether sport or other industries.

I thought it was a bad move to hire Ed too. I was wrong. At the same time I don’t blame myself for thinking that because every time he was a head coaching job it went down hill. Coach Ogeron admitted that when he was a head coach in the past that he tried to do everything and coach everything. He didn’t trust others to do their job. That’s one thing that’s very impressive that he was able to completely turn that habit and thought pattern upside down and let others have complete control of their jobs. I will admit, I was all in on the Herman hire but I thought that even entertaining the idea of bringing Jimbo to BR was a horrible idea! The guy had just ran FL St into the ground and got smoked by Louisville! Why the hell would we want him at LSU. I will say that I was honestly one that never doubted that Orgeron would fight hard to be a good coach. The media kept bringing up his Ole Miss days as if people can’t learn from a mistake and grow. Also him being from Louisiana gave me comfort that he would do whatever he needed to do to win because he knows how important LSU football is to us Cajun folk. I also thought at the very least, we got one of the best recruiters in the country running our program and we’ve already seen the benefit of that. I remember telling my brother in law that my biggest fear was LSU going with a different coach and O leaving and becoming head recruiter at a rival program. Glad that didn’t happen. Just look at what he’s done as a recruiter. The guy recognized that Brennan wasn’t ready and went out and got Joe Burrow whom I believe will win the heisman this year. Found Joe Brady whom I believe will be LSUs next OC. He recognized our kicking game struggles and went out and got Cold as Ice Tracey. Not to mention, Jamar Chase, Derrick Stingley, John Emery and a host of other extremely talented players! O is the man!!

Take a look at Clemson and LSU, the main key to both of their success is humility by the head coach. The same can be said for the UVA basketball team. Pride and overinflated ego, particularly at the head coach level, is a problem in college sports.

O started off with a big mistake in Canada originally, but props for fixing it. No HC is without flaws or mistakes. If LSU will pay up top dollar(2 million/yr) for coordinators then this model should work for them. I don't know that he is a championship caliber coach, but I think they can beat Bama finally so he will have a chance to earn it with how they finish. O is a good coach, we will see if he is elite or upper echelon with how this season ends. They should be trying to capitalize with Burrow as I don't think they have another QB developing or coming through recruiting that can duplicate his numbers.

But these a holes in we have at USC wanted a California Pete Carroll dude, this was after Kiffin , Sarkisan, and after everybody turned them down they go with With Helton. But we knew , we knew us regular people that Coach O was our guy , shit everybody knew if they hired him we were going to compete for championships. Ever since I read the LSU football news and cheer for him , since USC isn’t doing shit. I’m so glad for him and his family I knew he was going to play for national titles. I loved the hire. I loved having him at Ole Miss and hated when he left. He's a great recruiter and the players love him. A program like LSU just needs to keep recruiting well and Orgeron had to prove he could control the program. That, to me was his perceived weakness because he had never done it before. Now I can't claim to have known he was going to do well, but I was happy he got the chance.

Your take on Orgeron's hiring wasn't wrong. It was a terrible, horrible decision and Joe Alleva should have been fired on the spot for allowing Jimbo and Herman to play him like that. However sometimes bad decisions turn out well and that's what we have here. Based on what we knew about Coach O at the time, he shouldn't even have been a candidate for the job. But after getting worked by Fisher and Herman, Alleva threw up his hands and said "screw it I'll just hire O". Apparently there was no Plan C. Also, what you said about him hiring the right people and then getting out of the way is dead accurate. That's what Les Miles failed to do (and note that Les just fired his OC mid-season). But let's not pretend that it happened in a single off-season. First there was the hiring then firing of Matt Canada, then Ensminger getting the job by default. But the key was bringing in Joe Brady who was able to see the strengths of the players he had and build an offense around them. That's the best hire LSU has made since Nick Saban and Coach O should get credit for that. If Les had made a hire like that (and stayed out of his way) there wouldn't have been that painful moment after the Auburn game. Oh and Geaux Tigers!

Miles was fired after the loss but the official never swinged his arm in motion to signaled the start of the clock. If he would have, LSU would have won the game because DJ Chark caught the game winning pass in the end zone with no time left in the game. Remember it was know as the Axe Cutting Game, it was either Les or Gus that was going to be fired after that game. Auburn keeps Gus on the hot seat, mostly after they pay him a big bonus. LOL 😂 I told all of the doubters of Gus just hang this year because of Bo Nix and Gus always pulling something out of the hat. Coach Orgeron was the reason Ole MS and USC went to bowl games. After the players graduated or left school that Coach O had signed, neither school went to a bowl game for several years and when Ole MS went, later they were sanctioned by the NCAA, fined $179,000.00, put on probation until Nov.30, 2020, and had to give up wins along with not being bowl eligible for two years. That is why Patterson left Ole MS. Coach Orgeron is a winner and like you stated, he knows how to get out of the way and let coaches coach. You might be fooled by his accent but he is a wise man and knows exactly what he is doing, he has hired a winning staff and can recruit lights out with anyone. LSU is building a top program that is shaking up college football all over, Coach had more recruits signed from Louisiana last year than any coach has done in the past 12 years, he has brought in some real good out of state players and he has some super stars in the waiting to sign later with this next class. Now that people have seen that Bama can be beat, things are changing and it will favor LSU as well as other schools.
