Saw Edward James Olmos this past weekend at Comic Con Honolulu! During the Q&A he recognized me in the line because I was wearing my 'Sonny Crockett' Suit! Asked him about his times in MV and he spoke most of about how his character Lt. Martin Castillo came to be throughout the panel... Understandable, because all he ever is asked all the time is Battlestar Galactica! Very funny and nice gent he was.

tgwoolshire whoah, sorry for the late reply! It was Honolulu Comic Con in Hawaii... He and other stars from popular Sci-Fi movies and TV series were guest speakers there (Erin Grey from Buck Rogers was there too!) I knew beforehand he was coming, so I instead of costuming as a Colonial Warrior from the reboot BG series, I came as a Sonny Crockett wannabe: Ray-Ban sunglasses, white suit, turquoise collarless shirt, and wearing white casual slip on shoes minus the socks... Lol.

Funny thing is. fanmail indicated the public HATED Edward James Olmos in this role in the first runs. Up until Castillo, Police Lieutenants/ Chiefs/ Commisioners in cop shows were there for one thing only: to shout at the protagonists when they done something illegal, to be a comic relief when the protagonists were right about the case and their boss was wrong or to be dissed as Olmos himself told "with the Starsky & Hutch method": Just say yes, and give your partner that look behind his back "go our own way". Olmos got Mann to give him complete control over his character and made him a visible force, not someone you would diss. It created some tension in the first episodes, Olmos made it a point to not speak loud, never look Johnson or Thomas in the eye, always speaking from the side or his back towards them, and use that ICY stare. Definitely NOT what Mann had intended, but boy it did work out so fine!

If Castillo says you’re dangerous, then that’s like a normal person calling you a harbinger of death! Here’s what I think: Gretzky missed on purpose. Someone that good at killing in a gunman’s world won’t miss so badly at that distance. He figures there’s more to gain from his own death, and wanted it from a friend.

This clip is taken way out of context, so here's the short answer: He was calling him out as both incompetent and likely dirty - certain drugs lords had been paying off certain members of the police to delay or interfere and he had suspected him for a time. If you'd watched the show, it would make more sense

@alb6396 жыл бұрын
Did you know that line from Castillo was improvised on the spot? That wasn't anything close to what the writers wrote. Originally, the producers wanted the Lt. to be flashy, almost as much as Crockett & Tubbs. He would go on raids with them, so on and so forth. Fortunately, Olmos had creative control over the character written into his contract. Olmos is the one who made Castillo this enigma to the Florida OCB. Olmos came up with the backstory for the Castillo character, remember his time in DEA how he was sold out by other DEA agents and left for dead when he and his men were ambushed? Castillo was the only survivor. Anyway, you know how Castillo had a way of talking to Crockett & Tubbs but not looking at them? He'd keep his eyes on papers he was reading while sitting at his desk or he would have his back turned to them staring out a window, but still fully engaged in the conversation...that was all Olmos too. He made that character and that character really helped make Miami Vice. His character was good grounding to the explosive detectives he had under his command. Sorry for the rambling...This is my favorite show ever.
