Hip hop has NOTHING to do with any type of jazz. There are two things that rap has in common with "straight ahead" jazz; 1) It is an original American art form (although rap does stretch the definition of "art form") and 2) It can be somewhat improvisational. Unfortunately, when disco took over in the mid 70's, it did irreprable damage to r&b, pop, and rock. When rap trickled into the mainstream during the 80's, it was a pleasant diversion that sampled classic r&b. That pretty much died on the vine after Dre's "The Chronic". Similar doings with hip hop. Now, most rappers crank out repetitive non-melodic garbage and the country's most popular vocalist releases song after song that differs only slightly from the previous one.The same runs, the same staggered beat. There's messages in some rap but there's precious little music being made there. Hip hop can't hide behind political rhetoric like rap. They just produce pure, unadulterated SHIT.
