Here is a Raw look into how the 2024 Belgian Waffle Ride British Columbia unfolded! This was such a rad, challenging course surrounded by breathtaking scenery! PLEASE come early to pre ride so you can soak up the views should you choose to participate next season!
With 10k ft of climbing, I knew I had my work cut out for me on this course. I was a bit worried when I didnt quite make it over the first climb with the 3 leaders. However, I locked in on the chase with Julien, and we fought hard to get back.
Althoug I found myself close to the limit a few times in the middle of the race, I kept beliving I could achieve an amaing result here. Even after not making it over the final climb, there was 10 miles to go to the finish and I put my everything into those 10 miles.
In the end, I came up short of top 3, finishing 4th overall. However, I was only 15 seconds down on 3rd and less than a minute down on the winner. This is the closest I've been to a win at a BWR, and I am extremly proud of this ride and the progress I've made!
Back to work now to build more fitness to try and close the gap and keep climbing in these races!

I’m very happy to see the race organizers didn’t hold back from making the course a tricky one. That’s a wicked representation of a typical gravel ride in BC. Awesome work!

Incredible highlights package and fantastic effort Joe! So fun to watch! I heard the Cinturato H is fast on smooth stuff but I'm afraid to run it when it gets wet and slippery with wet leaves. Kudos from BC

@jgoettl2.0 Күн бұрын
Yeah you have to be a bit careful with it! You could run it in the back and go with an Cinturato M up front for a safer setup! The m still rolls pretty quick I hear! Have not tried it yet as I get along well with the h’s except BWR Arizona I will run somthing with more grip next year

@@jgoettl2.0 I've been running the M's and they aren't the fastest in the world but I don't feel they roll slow on the centerline if the tire is not worn. So new-ish ones would be good for racing. I'm finding mine are starting to show noticeable wear on the centerline/crown and there might be some more drag from the knobs just off the centerline. The grip is fantastic though. You'd have to experiment with pressure to see what works for you. I run the tanwalls which look cool but are heavier than plain black I believe.

Great footage. I rode the 50 km Wanna. I was planning to do the 100 km Wafer but my 62 year old ankles started acting wonky several weeks before the race so did the short course.
@jgoettl2.0
@jgoettl2.0 Күн бұрын
@@garycasperson4106 thank you, sounds like a good compromise, especially on this course! One simple but super effective way to them the ankles is to lay on your back, lift one leg up so your hip and your knee is at 90/90, and then do foot circles 1 minute slow in both directions, then point and flex the toes for 30 seconds. Do this daily and it will add up! I’ve got a video called “daily movement routine for cyclists” that begins with this exercise! Hope you had a good time out there still!

@@jgoettl2.0 Thanks for the exercise tip. My ankles swelled up in weird way that has never happened before. And this was after I had already cut back huge on my training mileage in late August. But they didn’t hurt at all during the race, although I had to be careful walking up some of the steep (17%) sections. In fact they felt way better the day after the race they did a couple days before the race. Planning to do the 100 km in 2025.

As a resident of BC, I apologize for the Camaro that smoked you out at 10:24. ;). Good job out there and thanks for the footage. Too bad it’s not a live feed. Perhaps a a 50 out front and 40 rear would be the ticket for this course?

What a course… I can see the gravel championships been held there. Very mixed terrain. Those downhills are awesome. Well Done, you basically followed the winner for some time…, he could have taken you to the finish if you never visited the pain zone. Super cool result. 2024 is turning out to a solid season for you. Glad you never had any issues. What tires did you use for this?
@jgoettl2.0
@jgoettl2.0 Күн бұрын
@@lazlo2511 thank you! I range to e pirelli gravel h’s in 45. I’d maybe consider 50’s next year as on top of the mtb trails, there were some long bumpy gravel roads plus the last climb where I got dropped was super steep and chunky. But there was ALOT of pavement as well! The winner, Julien, was on mtb tires and while it was a little tough keeping up in the single track, I could tell he was slower on the road as we were chasing the leaders down…. Ups and downs to each setup on this course! Rob Britton ran 40’s but I would not reccomend that!

Great ride, Joe!! Awesome to see you - once again - riding among the leaders all day. Looks like the course was a ton of fun. How did you feel about your tires in that terrain? There were a few times where it looked like a little more front-end bite would have been helpful.
@jgoettl2.0
@jgoettl2.0 2 күн бұрын
@@efraer Hi Eric! Thanks for the comment! I think the only thing I would change would be running the same tires in 50’s vs 45’s. While the video doesn’t show it, there was ALOT of road, and I could tell Julien, who was on mtb tires, was not rolling as fast as I when we were chasing! I could let out a few more psi which would give more grip! Then there was actually a long bumpy forest road plus the final climb was really rough, and more volume would have helped! For most riders though, I think a little more bite on the front wheel could help! The dirt is not as slippery here as it is in Utah or Arizona though, so you don’t need as much grip!

@@vexed25 such a tough one to decide, the video doesn’t show, but there was ALOT of pavement in this race as well! I’d maybe do the same tire, Pirelli gravel h’s, but go to 50’s instead of the 45’s I ran. In top of the mtb trials, there were some chunky fire roads in here too!
