I always thought the third hinge was to stop the door bowing. Not to take any weight. Of course 2 hinges will hold a door, but they won’t stop the middle from warping.

Roast Dinner, Why wasn't the door placed on the opposite side, against the wall?

Hi buddy, thanks for your comment, it’s because the light switch would have been on the wrong side and also these are privacy doors so that when you open the door you can’t see directly into the room 🍻👍

Roast dinner. Nice to see that you had a similar issue as i normally have putting new doors into out of square frames. I have yet to come across a head thats level! Unless its one ive done lol. Mostly i find the head is 10 to 15mm out of level! Thats typical to what i find in older houses. And of course if its a fire door going in the hole then theres another issue! It would be nice to see how you get round that problem and your technique for scribing the stiles to the legs of the frame. I tend to (just my way of trying to do it which they dont teach in college) is from the other side of the door, put a door hook over the top and clip it to the top of the arc on the other side leaving the door proud of the stops but just touching the frame so you can get a 3mm packer and your pencil in and scribe a line up and down the (inside) of the stiles and across the head this will give you a line to plane/cut. Dont cut right upto the line just shy of it then you can tinker with it as you wish. Always sounds simple hanging a door but it can be a right pain especially the doors like your putting in as the vertical lines can exaggerate the out of plumb lines. If it looks right it is right which is not necessarily plumb and square! Every door is a learning curve! I spoke to another joiner and he said he just takes the arcs off and adjusts the lining to fit the door....rather than door to lining. No right and wrong way just your own way that works. Great video keep it up. Thank you.

How much of a gap do you leave at the bottom when fitted a new door lining when there is no flooring layed yet. Just the sub floor
@LTWCarpentry
@LTWCarpentry 5 ай бұрын
If being carpeted I normally leave 18/20mm this may change depending on the quality of carpet going down. If it’s a laminate or tiled floor ect I will allow the thickness of flooring plus any underlay ect plus 5mm

Roast dinner. Lovely video thanks. I noticed that there were 3 hinges at some point on that door liner. You weren't tempted to fit a third hinge to hide the empty cut out? Or perhaps spoil us by showing how you make a fillet to fill the unused slot? Not the point of the video I know. You showed us some lovely techniques for fitting into a wonky hole. But I have a keyboard and I know how to weild it!

Great thorough vid. You've made me feel more confident about hanging doors and making a roast dinner. Thank you. 2 Questions: 1. all the other vids I watched recommended using a self-centering drill bit for drilling hinge holes. I'm interested in your thoughts about these vs. your method of drilling off-center towards butted side of hinge. 2. I am working with a pre-made custom door with the hinges already attached from previous placements. They are different than the current hinge placements. So I need to router out places for the new hinges. Any tricks for getting the depth set on the router to make the door centered left to right? Thanks in advance for any and all advice!
@LTWCarpentry
@LTWCarpentry Ай бұрын
Hi Sam, thanks for your patience buddy, Right number 1 - nothing wrong with using the self centering ones I just prefer off setting as it pulls the hinge in tighter. 2 - I’ve done a video about fitting hinges that will explain how to set your hinges I would recommend having a watch on this one I hope this helps and thanks for your comment and questions 👍🍻
