In the Hmong culture brothers can direct orders to their sisters so the brothers were not in the wrong even if they were jerks about it. She should've just smart about the whole thing. First of all, NEVER take over her brother's policy. Buy her own. Secondly, DO NOT handle the funeral no matter how incompetent her brothers were. That's why they have their clan. She should've just contributed money and then stay out of it.

Money for weddings and funerals will always be an issue for greedy Hmong people. Glad to be living in America where I make my own money and I don't have to deal with greedy Hmong people. Even so; I earn my own money, pay my own bills, and splurge on myself and I'm still selfish for not giving anyone MY MONEY that I work hard for. Hating on someone but always wanting their money - that's greedy Hmong People for you.

We have a lot to learn from this story for sure, but we need to stop having these extravagantly expensive funerals. This is a big burden that is the cause of many family relationships to fall apart. We can still honor our parents and give them the traditional burial that they deserve but we don't need to go all out in other areas only to save face and make us look good. Funerals were done in Laos for many generations that didn't cost this much. Why can't we spend this money on them while they are still alive and not when they are gone.

This can only happen when Hmong people stop judging those who don’t do extravagant funerals. Unfortunately the Hmong people are a people based on reputation. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone watches what everyone else is doing. Me, I could care less as many of us are doing now. The ways are changing, just not fast enough. Change is coming, we just have to stop judging others for what they do.

It's the norm because Hmong parents don't know how to be parents. That's why their children end up hating each other. First of all, the daughter should've never took over her brother's policy. Just let it lapse on it's own. Buy her own policy. Secondly, no matter how incompetent her brothers are, let their clan take over and deal with it. She should just tell them that she is only a daughter and has a new life with her husband. She can contribute monetarily but otherwise she is out of it.

Whether sons stick up for their parents or not, daughters should stay out of it. Let the brothers and their clan deal with it. Otherwise, parents will need to make it clear from the very beginning that they don't have a gender preference about these things. The problems start when parents aren't clear. They want to be Hmong but then they also ask a lot from their daughters when they can't get it from their sons. I'm glad my parents were NEVER like that. They made it clear who was to play which role in our family. And if my brother and nyab fell short on expectations my parents just learned to live with it. They didn't run to their daughters and vauv to pick up the slack so that my brother and nyab feel upstaged. If they were unhappy with my brother then they went to the clan, not to their daughters. This story is messed up because of parents who to be Hmong but not.

What a great story to hear. I am a daughter who married a Hmong man and had to bury my mother as well for similar reasons. Thankful for my spouse and understanding. The society is changing and everything is technically about money - while living and after death. I have seen parents who live with their daughters and hmong husbands who still adopts the old culture and their lives are filled with riches and no issues in the family. Sometimes I think these stories were created back in the days to just isolate the daughters. At the end of the day, its about kindness, compassion, and how you loved when you were living. The problem with nowadays is the old parents didn't care to take responsibility for themselves. Sure they have kids but they tend to think that all kids (sons) is responsible for their funeral expenses and not all of their sons will contribute equally or willing to contribute money. For any old parents, please buy your own policy to cover yourself so that your kids never have to fight. Some parents are very unfair too, they save their money and intend to give to their favorite child, yet they want all the others to pay for their funeral. This is why funeral always bring fight among children.

That'll be the hmong culture that I so hate about. When my dad died Sept 2020, it was the daughters and my mom that buried him as well. We know that when it's my mom's turn, it's going to be us girls again.
