Nice review video. Perhaps you should keep the blade and cap prior flattening the base as you want to preserve its tension. Just retract the blade to its safe position.

Thanks! 😊 That seems to be a common thing people do, but in my own experience I've never had any difference in flattening the sole with the plane assembled/tightened or not. 🤷♂️

The general consensus is that when you flatten the bottom of a plane you want to make sure you have the lever cap set taught and the blade retracted. The tension of the cap is supposed to bend the plane and you want to flatten it in the same state you use it in.

It's the same thing as the baym, made by the same 'Quansheng' factory at least. They sell under a few names in europe and as woodriver in the US. Iv'e got a couple and think they are excellent for the price.

@@wildrandomness Hehe, planes can be a rip-off! Specially the 'collectible' ones! And you really should know how to set them up for optimal performance, because I've seen even the Lie-Nielsen (arguably the Rolls-Royce of planes, which claims to come out of the box ready to be used) need some fine-tuning before it's truly perfect! 😉

It's a Rebate plane and doesn't have an adjustable mouth , I have the Lie Nielsen version and they don't have an adjustable mouth only on the block plane version's .
@janee79953 жыл бұрын
Bought this one too(16-12) adjustable mouth version. (shop brand :dictum) The edges are little bit sharp. A file and some 1000 grid sandpaper will remove it. The mouth had some small burs. Again same sandpaper The blade isn't very sharp. So use their free sharpening service when you order any dictum brand planes/scissels. The blade is 99,9%straight. Yep,same sandpaper My extra blade is sharpened to 30 degrees (max) and extremely sharp, used their free service on this one. That's how I know the difference. The sole is 99.95% flat It has some very minor dents 2cm behind the mouth. These dents are on both sides and 1,5cm long 6mm wide and 0,01mm deep. It's about 730gr, 20cm long 5cm wide. This little beauty costs just under 80 euro
@adam039573 жыл бұрын
Hi a late contribution but when flatting the sole shouldn’t you of had the blade in and retracted incase the plane flexes when you do tension it up?
@SculptyWorks3 жыл бұрын
That's a common belief, that might be right for some, but I've tried both ways before on multiple planes and found no difference whatsoever. Perhaps it's something needed on planes made of thinner or more flexible materials, but on a beefy one like this, it doesn't seem to make a difference. 👍

It's nice to see how a professional sets up a tool I would have thought is good to go right out of the box. @wildrandomness The so-called 'premium' brands supposedly are good to go right out of the box, but I am extremely picky so even when handling a Rolls-Royce of tools I will still double-check to make sure everything is in good order! 😉 But that's also because I have seen the 'premium' brands need touch-ups too.

I might sound stupid, but what is the utility of the rabbet block plane? Ps: is Ash tired to play with your tools?😂
@SculptyWorks4 жыл бұрын
Ash wasn't in the video, because believe it or not, I actually don't stage the scenes where he appears, he just shows up on his own (oftentimes by trying to climb me while I work). And this time he didn't feel like showing up. 😉 A rabbet plane is to cut rabbets! ...helpful, I know! 😁 It is also a fully functional block plane. But the foremost use of that kind of plane however, is to be able to plane right up against a corner. On normal planes, the blade doesn't go all the way to the edges of the bottom of the plane. On a rabbet plane the blade is the width of the plane.
@jollieJollie4 жыл бұрын
@@SculptyWorks thank you! I understand now!🙂 and I guess Ash is just a normal cat who decide what he do 😂😂

What you bought is a factory seconds Luban, sold by a dodgy seller that always show up on retailers like eBay, AliExpress, Amazon, etc.. If you had actually bought that Luban through a proper retailer (which might not be possible if you live in Nth America), you wouldn't have gotten those "sloppy seconds" problems, which you then had to fix and it also would have been half the price. It's the risk you take with a shitty retailer you bought through, so know better next time and you've paid dearly for that. That said, the blade you had to hone is not actually a "sloppy seconds" problem; that is a deliberate and sensible intention when buying Luban products. All you had to do was a simple 30 second honing and you ended up overkilling it (by grinding) ironically. In the end you've ended up with something far better than LN or Veritas, (after fixing those "sloppy seconds" issues) because the cutting steel in Luban blades is not crappy PMV11 or A2 disasters - it's a true high carbon blade. You've ended up with something far better, as we saw ultimately (despite mostly inappropriate thicker shavings). The Luban blade ironcially hid your plane setup flaws, but we can see what this tool could potentially be (nonetheless), once it's finally/ideally setup. I think you know you've now got a winner (that's far better than a LN or Veritas) and you are still yet to truely discover this. This was a fun video to watch and thanks. Have fun! P.S. Another irony is: even when a purchased Luban is a "sloppy seconds", it's still can be a fracking awesome ultimate tool (as has been hinted at here).

It amazes me that people such as your self think a hand plane has to have a super flat soul to get good square flat results, when the manufacturing plant made your plane it's ground to approximately ( .04 mm ) Plenty flat for the job. If you have honed your blade well and some people can't but if you can then, set blade in and set it correctly, no problems. I have this plane and many of Luban planes. Your nit picking. The screw on the side of the Lie Nielson is for the nick blade not an adjustable mouth.
@SculptyWorks4 жыл бұрын
You are correct, I am nitpicking. 😋 I like my planes that are supposed to have a flat sole to have a perfectly flat sole. It's personal preference. Thanks for the info on the Lie-Nielsen, I had an older model that didn't have the nick blades.
