Nova, I have cleaned up a 301A and it’s a beautiful LBOW in a cabinet. Yet, in stitching I still don’t get a flat seam. It pulls and puckers the fabric,which is not acceptable. I’ve loosened the presser bar thumb screw, replaced the broken spring in the bobbin case, and taken the tension assemble unit off and on several times. What else could I try? I’m chomping at the bit to start using her to quilt and piece. I’ll look into ordering the slant shank walking foot soon. Thanks!

Your difficulty could be several things. Without seeing it, my best instinct is to day you have a tension issue. I've seen needles cause this type of difficulty, too. Replace the needle. Check the bobbin case tension using the bounce test. On the upper tension, there could be a myriad of problems....

My bobbin case is catching on the base plate and/or the feed dogs are pushing up and catching on the base plate when rotating, causing it to lock up. When I take the base plate off, it runs smooth as butter.

You must have a thread jam in the hook area.

Nova Montgomery you’re right. There’s a wad of string stuck inside one of the holes but my machine is so grungy that the screws are stripping if I try to get the bobbin case holder off :(

Pursuit of Adventure You do not need to remove the screw. Stand the machine on its plug end and soak the hook in kerosene. It will disolve the thread.

Nova Montgomery you’re seriously amazing. I had an eyeglass screwdriver and used that after heating up the screw (I couldn’t resist) and managed to get the piece popped off and removed a wad of string! Works perfectly now, just needs a good cleaning and lubing! Thanks a million!!!

I got a brown and Brown two-tone one of these today with a zigzag attachment and it came with a tube of motor lube I would like to have my machines oil that's usually all they need I've got 18 now and I've taught myself to work on all of them love it this is one of my favorites now along with my touch and cuss . Those actually are good machines if they're set up right and they're also slant shank but I believe the add on zigzag attachment makes prettier zigzags than the machines that have it built in, just my opinion. Those are called ( beveled gears///

I would agree that the machines without the built-in zigzag make prettier stitches. You will need both sewing machine oil and Nova's Motor Lubricant for the machine. Using Nova's Motor Lubricant is what is detailed in this video. All of the oiling places are detailed on Nova's 301 Maintenance Card.

The lubricant is Nova's Motor Lubricant. I hired a chemist and spent three years in the development of this product. It available to purchase in the SHOP area of my website: novamontgomery.com.

I blew it! I placed a couple of drops of oil in the motor port. Do I need to take out the motor and disassemble it?

NO! That is NOT a job for someone without training and experience. Run the motor. Watch for smoke. No smoke, you got lucky and are ok. Smoking, ship me the machine.

I've worked on many motors and machines unless you put an overly amount in there it will be okay like she said watch....

My 301a motor doesn't have a pin to lubricate. Is it missing or is their another way to grease the motor? Any suggestions would be lovely!

Some 301's had sealed motors. So, there is nothing to lubricate. Happy Stitching!

It's kind of a bakelite helical worm gear I've never seen one go bad but I don't like it I wish that would have been steel

I was very tired and used sewing machine oil instead of lubricant on my gears - I didn’t do the motor. My instructions say never apply oil to these gears...oops! Can anybody give me advice on what to do now? I feel pretty dumb

STOP!! On my phone I could not see that this is about a 301! Do not wash with kerosene. Wipe off what oil you can, then grease. The reason the manual says never to oil is that this gear runs on a shaft connected to the motor. So, if oil is placed here, it will drain into the motor. So, depending on how much you put in there, your motor may begin to smoke.

When I rotate my handle, the gears don't rotate :( Any help? The only one rotating is the one in that back right corner that is vertical.

Are you sure that the stop motion knob (silver knob inside the large hand wheel is tightened down?
