The Fifth Element is one of the best sci-fi movies ever. And what makes is even better is that they didn't try to milk it into a franchise.

Part of The Fifth Element’s magic is that it mostly had real sets. Same with Blade Runner. Their worlds seemed even more real which gives their audience a better connection. Both very admirable films

I feel like it had to do a lot with casting. Valerian would have been so much better with a different cast. Obviously, nothing will ever beat the fifth element.

Just saw Valarian, it had a lot of good parts but didn’t work, was it acting, CGI, writing, IDK…I like what I’ve read of it since seeing it but as a film, definitely Fifth Element works better on many levels.

Amen. I’m always puzzled by how directors think the more CG the better their movie is. It’s like... uhhhh. I understand it saves time on set, but it still feels like a real film rather than an film with 2000 CG shots and only 200 real shots.

Cgi is a good tool to use to help boost a scene but over use of it ruins the image. Practical is still by far the best looking on camera it takes little extra work but it’s worth it in the end. That future city still looks good today.

The beauty of old-school SFX is that its not trying to be super realistic, and thats why its more belivable. With modern CGI it tries to be super realistic but fails miserable because of uncanny valley.

Luc Besson has officially established himself as the French George Lucas. Both made a amazingly memorable sci fi movie, then made a cg green screen hot messes around it. Then created forgettable animated fantasy films, and both recently married fine black women.

I disagree. I feel the movie wrapped up perfectly. There's really not much else to do with the movie, the bad guy "Mr. Shadow" really can't be topped either.

Avatar has many CG effects too. Best of Valerien = First 10 min, Planet Mui (but lack in character development) Best of Fifth Element = Relatable characters (but lacking in effects e.g. Mangalore rubber suits while Diva Plavalaguna have best practical effects).

Dude, the freaking pearl aliens were an immediate turndown for me. They looked so fake and forced trying to be the innocent alien species that I was genuinely upset. I was pretty hyped about the idea of Luc Besson making another Sci-fi movie but Valerian is a big dissapointment

If you can put a guy in a great looking practical suit. It always looks better on camera then a cgi suit. That’s why I love the Alien Queen from Aliens cause it’s all practical guy in a suit with guys off screen controlling the movement. Jurassic Park built a huge animatronic T Rex a real physical dinosaur and again looks so good on camera.

The amount of special effects in valerian really takes you out of the film. There’s no escape from reality in it. It’s a big giant cartoon.

A cartoon can be better than film. See japanese animated movies from 80's and 90's The problem with Valerian is a messy script, forgettable heroes, and a lack of proper storytelling covered with tons of CGI. Basically just like every Scifi movie now, including Dune. Its a B tier movies with a giant budget.

Main issues with Valerian. Soundtrack is peanuts compared to 5th. I realize 5th has incredible music, but Valerian didn't hook you at all with it's music. Other issue with Valerian is the second half. First half is fabulous, and original.

I have to disagree with the director. Yes practical is a pain but it looks so much better. That future city looks so good still dose today cause the whole city was a model and that always looks better then cgi. Don’t get me wrong you can get some really good looking cgi but practical still the way to go in my opinion. Cgi should be used only a little I feel some directors use it too much and it ruins the image.

Yes can a director make a practical movie without so much cgi. I think Micheal Bay the only one left but even Bay can have good CGI with practical effects that’s the point. Use cgi as a tool to help boost your practical effects not make everything cgi.

Fifth element was amazing, one of the greatest sci fi movies of all time, valerian.. I have tried and tried to watch it and cannot get through it, I feel one off the main things it is missing is a strong male lead, dane dehann I thought didn't suit the part at all, I honestly thought someone like Jason statham who has tht Bruce Willis type ruggedness would have been far better and probably would have made a difference to it... Other than that it didn't have a fraction of the magic the fifth element had

Box Office doesn't mean much these days like it once did. Friggin Batman V Superman made hundreds of millions and it was garbage. Valerian is a good movie. Really liked it. Hope to get a sequel.

Comparing these two movies is like fifth element is a jet engine and Valerian is a lawnmower engine not even close Valaria was absolute garbage no matter how big of budget you have or how much you think more CGR makes it better you were terribly wrong I watch Valerian and I felt absolutely nothing it just felt like a bunch of things happened on the screen I didn’t feel like the characters were ever in any danger and I specially didn’t leave the movie wondering what happened next to fifth element I can watch once a week for the rest of my life and still be on the edge of my seat
