I believe it actually is a gay film, the director covered it up because the company knew that if they revealed it was a gay film, they wouldn’t make as much money and we all know how much Disney loves money.

One difference: many of us are not lucky enough to have a gay buddy to help us come out. It's very common for a gay kid to get a crush on a straight friend who then doesn't really return those gay feelings, and so the gay kid has to deal.with that disappointment of a first heartbreak and then find someone new. But if the straight friend stays friends instead of being repulsed, that's still a better outcome than losing the friendship too. -- This is not to take away from the movie, because the movie is great. I wish we could see a movie that truly, directly tackles two boys in a first discovery of being gay, whether both are or just one is. It would make homophobes' heads explode, but it could do wonders to affirm th LGBT folks, and to help queer kids questioning or coming out. I've locked lately that something like a gay friend or gay sex ed would have helped me. A movie that genuinely dealt with two boys discovering gay feelings and love would have helped. -- But I want to own a copy of Luca when it comes out on disc (I sure hope it does). It's amazing, one of the closest things I've seen to this.

When first watching the movie (and only seeing 1 trailer) i was like “Huh? Is this... This is kinda queer coded”.... I love this movie so much, its so sweet and how they didnt make guila the main crush, instead all the kids are just such good friends (who 2 lil sea monsters may have crushes on each other whfjejf but still). And the way alberto sold the vespa for luca to go to school???? So sweet.... and they didnt push him to go woth them, it makes sense why he stayed but it hurts and that train scene really brought tears .... (and the illustrations in the credits were a perfect touch 🥺✨💗)

Disney has been slowly working towards it. They are still too afraid of actually making a movie for all ages about gay kids.They know they exist. They are still afraid of the backlash of showing them. The gay kids loose out, because they need at least some representation about characters like them that they can relate to on the big screen. Other kids loose out because they don't understand that gsy kids are just normal kids too. They have all the same feelings and interests as any other kid. They just want to fit in, and nobody teaches them how to. Someday people will get that. Disney is trying. Give them credit for that. But going too slowly when times are changing so fast, is disappointing a lot of people.

I know that the director said it was meant to be platonic, but there had to be some animators working at Pixar who knew the scenes read as more than platonic and deliberately included expressions or shots to make it extra. That scene where Luca and Alberto are holding hands when Luca is on the train and they slowly have to pull their hands apart when the train starts to move and we get a close up of their hands and their forlorn expressions, then Alberto runs after the train.... That's not a scene you do when you mean to show purely platonic feelings. Those types of scenes are read as romantic because they're exclusive to couples.

Soon I'll be moving away and I'll *finally* be able to be my true self. Unrelated but the quote from Luca's Grandma: “Some people, they’ll never accept him, but some will and he seems to know how to find the good ones.” This quote is so fkng good its a crime, and it relates so much to the LGBT+ themes of this movie, it's insanely good also i cried so much when luca and alberto said goodbye on the train 😭

OMG I just came across this video and I must say, you did an amazing job covering everything Luca has to offer in terms of its message and story. :') This was an extremely well-thought out analysis, and I couldn't agree more with your points of the film being an allegory for being LGBT. I don't think there's ever been a Disney or Pixar film that I've ever related to as much as this one. To be completely honest, Luca was one of the first films that led me to fully accept and realize that I'm bi, simply due to how much I related to the story, the characters, and their struggles of feeling alienated by the society they live in (a struggle I still feel often on a daily basis). Everything resonated with me so much and touched me so deeply, I still get brought to tears every single time I watch, or even think about Luca. :'( Luca is just breathtaking in so many ways, and it genuinely makes me sad that no one ever seems to talk about it anymore. To me, it's a beautiful heartwarming masterpiece that deserves all the love and attention in the world.

I don't think Disney queer-baited here. Any story about learning to be yourself in the face of social condemnation would naturally have a lot of parallels to queer experience. Yeah, it would have been progressive for them to show some evidence of a crush. Like a bashful or longing gaze, a few lingering moments of hand-holding, or a peck on the cheek. (Heck, they're Italian; Disney could have easily passed it off as a cultural thing.) However, I'm not convinced it would have been a good move in this particular story. Here, Luca is enraptured with Alberto because he represents freedom and the courage to live on one's own terms, and it is through that encouragement Luca is able to overcome his fears. Alberto sees Luca as a source of acceptance and found family, and it is through that encouragement Alberto is (eventually) able to overcome his fear of abandonment and reintegrate with society. In other words, the whole plot revolves around non-romantic elements of their relationship. If romantic elements were to have been added, that would have conflated with their other feelings and the whole thing would have become pretty muddled.
@verybarry3317
@verybarry3317 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that representing the narrative in the way you described it would’ve cheapened the story, but do you think if they executed the idea well you’d have a problem with it? Just as a hypothetical, if Luca and Alberto did have a feelings for each other, but this further inspired these two to new heights. Also thanks for sharing your pov I appreciate it :)
@speljufcharlotte8999
@speljufcharlotte8999 Ай бұрын
Yes I love how in the ending they both follow something they long for the most. For Luca, exploring and learning more about the world. For Alberto, having a father figure take care of him. They are a little too young for romance to be their main objective. They do need to grow up first. So I definetly think these characters can be read as gay. But they are also more than just gay. They have their own motives and personality. You know, just like real people. Which makes the movie richer and more inspiring than if they would have ended up on their vespa experience in the end. They found out the deeper wish behind their first dream. They shared some sweet time together. And maybe, when they are older and matured enough, they'll turn their relationship into something serious.

Luca's parents being fearful and over controlling and overprotective, not wanting him to explore his interest in the "land-monsters" (humans) and life on land, out of the water -- was a lot like my parents. They mean well. They love their son. But they can't see that what they are doing is wrong, and is costing him his friends, his freedom, and his happiness. My own parents interfered for years, throughout my childhood and adolescence and even into adulthood with my relationships, both perfectly ordinary friendships and other social interactions, to a mostly-unspoken homophobia and interference there, because of the other strict control going on. Of course, I both did and did not rebel against that and didn't always know they were doing so until I got older, and then when they were gone. So I grew up conflicted, too scared and ashamed to talk to my parents, believing (rightly) that I never could, and yet having those gay feelings from fairly early on. I didn't know how to deal with that. I thought for most of my teens that I'd somehow meet the right girl and like girls (hey, I liked girls fine, but I didn't like-like girls, no "spark" of sexual attraction like when straight boys go girl-crazy). Instead, I increasingly had stronger gay feelings and no real outlet or understanding much about that, only knowing I wanted a friend to talk to or try things out with. My experience is probably not uncommon for gay kids from my generation, and I think it's still common today. I wasn't quite afraid my parents would disown me. I was afraid they'd not really understand or accept me, and that meant they did truly love me unconditionally. So I grew up hearing that I cold talk to them about anything, but increasingly, I heard, ?anythng but that, or maybe that other thing, or this thing over here, but definitely not the gay thing." I had mostly good parents and a mostly good family life: no physical abuse, lots of lecturing, and the control and protection were a kind of neglect or unintentional, unaware abuse. I loved them and they loved me. But I needed some, uh, gay liberation. It wasn't until they were gone that I came out. To parents of kids who aren/t straight, I'd beg them to love and accept their kids, gay /. not straight and all. It would be far better than to risk permanently crippling your preteen/s or teen/s chances at a happy, fulfilling love life, or delaying that by year, or worse, the possibility of that child dying from despair. I wish I'd gained my independence sooner. I wish too that I'd had more positive experiences, some friends to confide in, some friends to test the waters with and discover that those gay feelings could be returned and could have love, emotional and physical, in good ways, along with it.

No, it isn't People just love confusing friendship and admiration with love. About the plot itself... Any movie about hidden an important part of you because its dangerous can be consider as that, which like... isn't that by itself anti- LGBT+ cause you are assuming you are monsters. About Alberto "Jealousy" of course you will be jealous if you were alone by so long (May be years) to finally one day having a friend and then feeling like he is losing his friend, feeling like before. Also, the marine creature= gay doesnt work as the parents nor family in general aren't this. Luca just want to see the world and in general Learn!, while Alberto want to feel accompanied by somebody. If you really want a fish LGBTQ+ movie, their is Shark Tale with the vegetarian shark, who gives an excellent example. Lesson: people are looking stuff where it isn't, and taking it as a fact.
@verybarry3317
@verybarry3317 3 жыл бұрын
I think the hiding yourself part isn’t anti-lgbt because it’s a normal reaction to social pressures. Take Luca for example right. If he just went to town and showed himself as a sea person, he’d probably be attacked or killed. He knows this, but he doesn’t know why. Luca gets the idea that he’s the monster because of others reactions, in a similar fashion to members of the lgbt+ community. It’s a common feeling, but it’s important to remember it’s based on social pressures not the person themself. The jealousy thing I think you’re probably right. I don’t think anyone was speaking as fact so I’m not sure what you mean? Also thanks for sharing your input I appreciate it!

In my opinion, I think it's disgusting how people are shipping Luca and Alberto even though they are just kids. shipping kids, in general, is just outright gross.
@speljufcharlotte8999
@speljufcharlotte8999 Ай бұрын
Shipping doesn't mean that you have feelings for the kids. Nor that you see them in a sexual relationship at all. Children can have romantic relationships with each other to the extend they comprehend what that means, at their age. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as it is age apropriate and they are each others equals in the sense of age, power and development. And shipping Luca and Alberto is more in a sense of "ah they're cute together." And maybe "it reminds me of when I was young and experienced my first childhood crush". It only gets gross if the adult wants to take part in the relationship (in fantasy) or projects age-inapropriate things onto it. And, for example, do you feel gross about people shipping Katara and Aang? They are about the same age and and up in a relationship. Age-apropriate. Only a little kiss. My point being, would you have honestly said the same thing if Luca and Alberto didn't happen to be two boys?
@speljufcharlotte8999
@speljufcharlotte8999 Ай бұрын
From what I gather, the desire behind the shipping is a wish from people to see their own childhood experiences represented on screen. In all of the video's they talk about the journey of self-discovery and finding acceptance. Not a word about the looks or attractiveness of these characters (because the latter would indeed be gross). And everybody absolutely recognizes that these are children. There is this false association between gayness and pedofilia that is very damaging and untrue. Therefor it is important to distinguish the intentions behind these video's and this ship. People see their younger selfs in these characters. Not at all, not anywhere that I have seen, a potential love interest. Also, I actually do have some problems with Kataang since they do have a relatively big age difference, and Katara does fulfill somewhat of a motherly role for Aang, so there is also a difference of power. I brought it up because I never ever found a comment about "you shouldn't ship children" in all of the many video's I've watched about the series. Because shipping isn't the same as desiring them. And gay people just want to see representation of their lived experiences. Thank you for comming to my TEDtalk.
