These two are the greatest kata performers of all time. Amazing katas, amazing champions. But, in my opinion, Milon was unique. His impact on the world of karate was unbelievable, he inspired so many athletes (myself included). He was a champion like no other. His katas were breathtaking. His Unsu, a nonpareil...

Michael Milon had technical sharpness and power. Luca Valdesi is fast and his Yokogeri are absolutely amazing, but in my humble opinion as a 2nd kyu (not yet the dizzying heights of black belt), Milon had the edge in that Luca occasionally sacrifices technical sharpness for speed and aesthetic...though obviously he's still pretty incredible!!

What a show of humility, you can see Milon giving Valdesi an applause after he performed such a true sport.

Repetition ad nauseum is the key here I think. It is very stressful on the body and can cause a lot of injuries. I guess that's why you don't get too many people competing at world class level into their forties. I was Munster champion in 1992. It's not nearly at a level as high as this but I was only 22. Unsu is a beautiful kata to watch and extremely difficult to get right in performance. Gankaku is very graceful and Valdesi gives an amazing performance here. For neutrals it has to be Milon.

On the basis of the two katas shown here I prefer Milon's Unsu for its power and dynamic movement. I think Valdesi's Gankaku is slightly contrived in its timing, but his skill is unquestionable.

physically Millon was very powerfull, several months before he died he regulary came to train with us in our dojo, the KCVO, (ranked 2nd in France) and his physic was very impressive compared to his size. that why he was so fast.

Je sais pas vous, mais le fait de connaître ces kata, de les voir éxécutés par eux, même si je sais qu'ils ne vont pas rater un seul mouvement, ça me fout un stress, une tension énorme ! Super excitant à regarder, c'est comme si j'étais dans la foule à chaque fois !

That is very true : yes, only one in over a million forms practitioners can be this good. Personally, I have been to 15 countries. And KZbin wise, plus other media resources elsewhere, you cannot find many like them.

5-0 for Milon. Even if there is a gap between those two competitors, Milon is much more powerful and a lot faster. Both are therefore excellent karatekas. Valdesi was able to develop a unique style in the actual circuit which makes him a tremendous world champion.

los dos son muy buenos sin duda!! los dos dedican y dedicaron tiempo para perfeccionar sus movimientos su plasticidad es unica. Que alguien trate de alcanzar ese nivel si, se puede y akio tamashiro y otros mas lo estan logrando. Todos es diciplina. Los dos ganan son leyenda en kata para competencia (oigan bien competencia).

Concernant les katas, je pense qu'on doit faire un distinguo entre un Kata de compétition juste pour des titres,et un Kata qui nous prépare au combat réel.

Un-stinking-believable. Gotta give it to Ao -- the Unsu made me shiver. They both have hand speed that makes me weep. Curious, though, the first kata is what we call Chinto (Shorin-ryu Matsumura). Is it called Gankaku in Shito-ryu or Shotokan? Yeah, too lazy to Google it.

I'm Italian and also in great estimator luca Waldenses ... but I have to say that this challenge Michael Milon is a large step above luca .... however beautiful challenge with two great champions ... too bad that Michael Milon died for cocaine overdose in 2008 ... really a huge loss in karate!

A classic throw, Strike to the back of the neck(pressure point) with collar grab(haito) with the kick(leg hook or pendulum swing) and then the body turn. Defence is, Standing on one leg is a "half-Guard" and then the yaku zuki is a reversal to that throw. If you want to talk about sport karate, then, yes it is an attack to a forehead or an eye poke.

They are both my role models, but if Milon Performded this Unsu today against Valdesis Gankaku, there is no doubt in my heart that Valdesi would win.. The standards have changed and so did the criteria for judging.

both are fantastic kata masters - both kata's are also technicaly advanced kata's. From what I have seen the French and Italians are exceptional in Karate. I will say however I favour Unsu as a kata over Gankaku (in terms of performance)

I used to train karate.... by experience... unsu is a difficult kata.... Milon is obviously my favorite in this case! He is soooooooo fast!

Wow! Wouldn't it have been great to see these 2 actually compete against each other! Using specifically these 2 katas, milon might win by a close call, maye 3-2. however, if you compared milon's unsu to valdesi's unsu, valdesi would win hands down in my opinion.

I think gankaku is more difficult, because longer, with balance positions on one leg, harder to keep a dynamic rythm between slow and fast stages. Unsu is a more explosive work, shorter, more spectacular to see.

I think Valdesi is amazing for his balance. And Milon does not turn his back foot into the forward stance and reverse punch in the 3rd punch of Unsu. However, Milon shows more speed, snap, strength, athleticism, and showmanship than Valdesi. Valdesi lags is in dramatic effect and "pop." Milon is much more interesting to watch.

Luca Valdesi: Shows more control, precision, and on the few fast techniques he does - demonstrates mastery. Michael Milon: Impressive kata, I've seen better. To compete, he just wasn't quite crisp enough. Extremely impressive height on his jump. Overall, it lacked that "oomph" to win my heart. I give this to Luca.

These two guys are the greatest karate-ka of all time in the kata section. While I respect Valdesi a lot, there's really no comparison between them, as Milon wins by miles. Milon's power, speed and kime are unparalleled. Valdesi cheats quite a lot when it comes to technique. Milon did that too, but was not as obvious. Also, Valdesi's kime, as impressive as it is, is not entirely real, as he slaps his kimono to produce the kime effect.

io fino ad ora non conoscevo milon, pure perchè nel karatè italiano ci fanno due maroni cosi loro e maurino, valdesi, ecc ... poi c'è sempre stata la regola che le loro forme si dovevano prendere da esempio ( nell'arbitraggio, quando c'era cesare baldini ) quindi erano impeccabili anche quando c'erano personaggi migliori di loro... questo rientra nella politica... cmq vedendo sto tizio io dico che è più bravo milon, a prescindere dalla forma che portano, sono cmq 2 cinture nere...

I know all this story about the "evolution" of Karate but I'm not sure how far should it get. I vote for Milon because his movements are more logical. Valdesi can control more his body but his kicks are just TOO fake... no one needs to kick anything above his head and Gankaku it's with Yoko Geri Keage so, doing it with Kekomi it's a "show off". Milon does the necessary and right and with an amazing speed, but controlled as well. I've been training for 12 years :)

Milon overall performance oddly he usally shorts his moves when i see his kata which i have seen a fewbut in this clip he was on point, luca had a solid performance and picture perfect move but he shortend his moves and that takes away from the kata eben doe it makes him almost unhumanly fast. usss

Bom, tem quem julgue o Milon por ele ter sido usuario de drogas... Mas tem muitos por aí que todos consideram um bom exemplo, mas na sua vida pessoal faz coisas nada respeitosas. Pra mim Milon é o melhor, independente se usava drogas ou não, ele só prejudicou a ele mesmo, o que é uma grande pena.

If Luca did Unsu too.. then it would be different story.. while he is performing Gankaku and Michael is performing Unsu.. They are not comperable.. Unsu is far prettier for look at than Gankaku..

luca wins! ..milon just chose the more fancy (looking) kata so noobs will say milon did better.. luca performed a more difficult kata with more attention to technique the way it is supposed to be performed rather then just sacrifice technique for speed like milon but it is a close call id give luca a 9/10 and milon an 8/10

Valdessi. As impressive as Milon's '96 performance of Unsu was, and it was a world-champion level demonstration, it did not have the nuance or demanding skill required of and demonstrated by Valessi's Gakanku in '08. The crane stance to full spilt side kicks were impressive and obviously so, but the 270 degree spin he did ay 2:09 in crane stance before the last side kick is, in my opinion, beyond the technical ability of of 90% of performers.

Then both should be compared performing the same kata, they both met at the finals in Munich 2000 and Valdesi got the 3rd place. Plus, it is not right that Gankaku is harder than Unsu.

I've always found Valdesi kata to be way much theatrical for my taste. His kata just bores me.....Milon kata is very good indeed, but he also have some theatrical moments in his Unsu. Technically I think Milon is better than Valdesi. Really strong techniques. But WKF is destroying kata...so when they are competing in WKF tournaments they have to use WKF rules: Kata busting rules!!!!!

Also, Luca's Unsu literally sucks.. He is great at Gankaku and Enpi but Unsu is not kata he should perform.. It would be fair if they both do the same kata, which would be chosen by judges. for example :Kaminari. Bad thing is they will never have chance to do it.. R.I.P. Milon

@tiborzkarate I don't think you know much about karate, to say these are far from mastery level kata. I've been studying for 14 years, have seen a lot and trained from some of the best. Never in my travels, have I seen kata close to this. Not even close. Those who fail to evolve often parish. Have you evolved or do you cling to the old, the rigid, the unflowing?
