My first language is English, but there are some things, such as "tison", which I know in my second (French) or third (Spanish), but not in my first.

You're really someone who put his focus on European languages and what you've accomplished is impressive. I always wondered how it would be for you to dive deep into a more exotic language like Arabic or Japanese and reach a high level of proficiency, since you would have to completely rethink your method to learn them, but at the same time your plate is already full with the languages you're trying to improve and/or maintain so it could be way too excessive as even the most impressive polyglots have their limits. I'm a French native speaker who's just fluent in English and who's trying to learn Thai to a high level proficiency, and it's already super time consuming to acquire a good command of such a distant language... In any case, wish you the best for 2025!

Thanks for the great comment! As for Chinese and Japanese, I haven't done much over the last 10 years, because, as you correctly pointed out, my plate is already full and to me as of now these languages are much useful, since I can practice them both in Rome and when I travel around Europe, which I do quite often, especially In the summer.

I love learning languages and have 'learned' about 15 altogether starting when I was a teenager and I am now in my sixties. I think I can say that I am confident/fluent in five: French, Spanish, Russian, Romanian and Czech. I can maintain a basic conversation in a handful of others. I can get by in basic transactions in a few more and there are some that I simply can hardly remember a word of. The problem is not learning languages, it's maintaining them. To remain fluent you have to use a language on pretty much a daily basis and it's physically impossible to do that with too many. Plus, before I retired, work demanded too much time. To be honest, much as I admire Luca (he is by far the polyglot I have most respect for) language learning is his job now rather than just a hobby. So if you have a full time job and a young family don't expect to reach his levels. My children have grown up now but when they were younger time was even less available for hobbies and now I have 'grandfather duties' which I adore but again retirement is a bit busier than I imagined it was going to be. Nevertheless, it's surprising how 'old languages linger'. I went to Budapest with my son recently. I haven't studied Hungarian for over twenty years but just being able to say the basics and know how to pronounce things made a big difference. And I was surprised by how much I could read. I felt less of an outsider. Now I'm getting on, I find motivation is central. The languages I use the most are Romanian and Russian because I actually use them and need them in my personal life. I am about to start learning Ukrainian. I have been working with Ukrainian refugees and most of the ones I've been working with so far are native Russian speakers from places like Kharkiv but I want to expand and work with those who are Ukrainian speakers. This is the motive I need. I'm past the stage of wanting to learning a language because it sounds or looks nice.

Busy language year for me as well. I had three active languages. Icelandic: I went to Iceland for the first time after 5.5 years learning it. I found it difficult to speak Icelandic in the city center of Reykjavik as English is the default language but I spoke a lot with a friend there and my Couchsurfing host. I read books, listened to audio books and podcast almost daily. Greek: I listened a lot to Easy Greek Podcast, worked with their transcripts and recently started participating to group talks. I also talk to my Italki tutor once a week / every 10 days. Swedish: I unexpectedly started learning because I applied for a job in Reykjavik that required Swedish knowledge and was hoping for a job interview (didn't happen unfortunately). I had quite a lot of input (podcasts, series) as I can understand it quite well and I don't really want to speak it (for now). I also had a maintenance system for 4 languages (German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish). I would rotate them on a monthly basis by mainly listening to a lot of podcasts and sometimes taking an hour conversation at the end of the month. Next year, I will keep improving those 3 main languages. Icelandic should massively improve as I plan to move to Iceland for one year. I will change my system for the other languages. I will focus moree on German up to June and on Italian from July (making them more active as well). I will rotate input in Spanish and Portuguese (plus German or Italian) every 3 days. Oh, I forgot English as it is just part of my life and I couldn't avoid it even if I wanted it.

I don't know how you manage to juggle with so many languages. Apart from my native Spanish, this year I've used English a lot, because it's my work and home tongue, and I also use it with friends, to read, to travel and to watch videos. I continued the study of Hungarian for the 4th year and I speak it at least once a week. I've gone back to German after 4 years without learning it and I now find it rusty. It doesn't fade into oblivion because I took it to a low C2 level, but I definitely need to work on it again. One trip and some people allowed me to use Galician, which I had nearly forgotten even though I lived in Galicia many years ago. I'm now trying to improve it through reading. And finally, I used French in another trip. My French has never gone beyond basic. Therefore, I should say that the experience sparked my interest in the language as opposed to rekindling it.

Hi Luca! Cool video as always and as always I couldn’t resist watching! One thing I found interesting that you say you “feel American” when there were arguably more references to British culture (e.g. “flatmate” and “Shakespeare”). Perhaps I was expecting a few insights after that phrase in terms of how you have learned more about American culture, something which I would like to learn more about myself! Loved the end section in Greek and Polish as these have probably been my two star languages in 2024 (Portuguese also took a back seat this year). Looking forward to the next video! Thanks again. Rob.

Regardless that is correct. I even talked with two Algerians who grew up speaking Arabic and French. English was their 3rd language, but acquired and learned. They even said between French and Arabic although they grew up bilingual, if one is used more than the other, then the one less used is going to be at a lower level. In their case French was less used, even though they speak French everyday.

Bravo! Any particular reason why you didn't include Mandarin Chinese (Considering it's one of your earlier languages)? I would love to hear your thoughts.
@LucaLampariello2 күн бұрын
I didn’t include Mandarin Chinese because it’s not a language I currently speak fluently-I’ve barely touched it over the past five years. That said, I’ll definitely go back to it someday! It’s such a fascinating language and undeniably one of great importance. Thanks for your comment, and Happy New Year! 🎉

Forza!!

Semplicemente immenso!!! Che fonte di ispirazione & motivazione assurda😎👏👏 My main focus this year was English & Swedish (long way to go). Planning to keep on going with these two but also adding: finnish ('cause I've finnish friends), polish (since I've been in Wroclaw, Krakow, Poznan & Gdansk) & Russian 🔥🔥🔥

I'm French . I spent a lot of time improving my English this year. In 2025, I should dedicate my time to Persian ( I'm B1 level) to be able to understand the Iranian variety and the Afghan one as well, and Mandarin ( I'm A1) to be able to have basic conversation when I'll travel there this year. I can also speak German and Breton ( a minority language in France).

I mostly focused on French this year. I also spent a lot of time on American Sign Language, German, and Spanish. There was one month in which I just focused on learning Danish - I am nowhere near conversational there, but that's fine. It's mostly for fun. My conversational levels in French and ASL are getting pretty good. I feel pretty comfortable in those two. German and Spanish could use a lot more attention. Spanish will likely come into greater focus in 2025.

On your screen, you have a British flag 🇬🇧 to represent the English language. You also have the American flag 🇺🇸 in the title for the same reason (which makes sense since you speak American English). This is an open question 🙋♂️ both to Luca and reader alike. Without lambasting the UK or the US, can someone explain why the English flag 🏴 isn’t used for…English? As a Mexican-American who speaks both languages, people here in (the United States of) America tend to put down, “I speak 🇺🇸 and 🇲🇽!” Shouldn’t i and the world be writing, “I speak 🏴 and 🇪🇸!”?

Couldn’t imagine losing even some of my American English because my Spanish was that advanced. Granted, I’d love that-but I’m way off since my target language is NOT the lingua Franca. In a way, English learners are lucky because they have nearly infinitely material AND can use it daily in everyday life. Spanish is close, but…not cigar!

When you make videos like this (or similar), is it completely off the cuff, completely with notes/outline, or a combination of the both? Basically what I am driving at with my question is how much is you speaking naturally in the language, with what you know vs scripted? Taking this video as an example, was every segment natural, every segment with a script (or similar), or a combination of both? My language goals for 2025: •Maintain/improve my active abilities in Spanish/Italian (passive skills are def C2, as I can read/watch whatever without issue, including university lectures, but I still make some mistakes when I speak, mostly just nailing all of the subjunctive triggers [I'm getting better, but still miss them at a higher rate than I would like]). •Get to a solid B2 active skills in German.

External factors certainly play a role. When the man we shall not name did the military thing we will not define, I was getting passionate about the Eurovision Song Contest. Ukraine always lands in the final with excellent songs, often in Ukrainian. At the same time, Duolingo was encouraging users to show solidarity to Ukraine by just subscribing to the course without actually studying. The h*ll I won't. I'm doing a lesson here and there, but I'm plodding forward. No Russian for me, my first Slavic language is Ukrainian.

Hola, Luca. Soy cubano. Me vale verga, charlemos y pasemosla genial.
