Charles' Duhigg's Power of Habit principles are perfect for this: 1. Have very clear what materials you will use (Assimil is amazing, I'd start with that as well). 2. Set a time of the day to do it daily. 3. Have the materials in an obvious, visible place. 4. Do something enjoyable right after as a reward (only if you've done everything you wanted to do). do that for a few weeks and..Boom! Language learning habit created. Anyway, back to my Russian learning...

At the intermediate level, you always feel a sense of inadequacy because one single session does not really improve your level by much. However, if you compund that over a year or two, there's lot of progress to be made.

Motivation is unreliable. This. Exactly this. Motivation will vanish one day, especially if you have a setback, which will also happen one day. Luca is totally right. Discipline is needed.

One method I found useful for discipline is not to think. If you don't feel like studying, don't make a decision about whether or not to study. Just count to 10 and then do it. It is a simple trick which I find works for me. It takes the decision out of my hands.

You are right Luca, I generally don't use an academic approach. Years ago, I remember you used an analogy of learning to ride a bike. It rings true today, and makes total sense. Regarding resources, I have steered away from the mainstream books etc, I just use authentic and engaging stuff, as you said. Cheers

Several months ago I wanted to start learning Chinese but lately what I've mostly doing is watching videos about learning languages: how to start learning a language; the best way to learn a language; how I learned Chinese in 6 months; Mistakes when you learning languages; best ressources to learn a language; how to stay motivated learning languages,... I guess I've watch enough of input about this topic and now I'll get those knowledge in practice. I'm gonna learn Chinese.

LUCA! You are absolutely my favourite you-tube polyglot. I just love your materials, philosophy on language learning, and you are clearly not misleading anyone, by mention of your being a 'polyglot' that's quite an understatement given your amazing progress. Is there such a thing as too many, even proficiently? I worry because I may have too many on my 'list' to learn and then I feel so confused...about how to get rid of them or reduce the number, but should it be about the number of languages? Shouldn't it be about keeping what we truly love?

Comprehensible and interesting are not an easy thing to find. I love philosophy, but studying Kant in a foreign language may not be a good idea. With that being said, I am a big fan of Luca. Great video!

Most people who think they are going to learn a language consider to devote one or two hours a week to this task 🤣🤣 then they say that learning languages is hard, or that the teacher is an exception. I must add that for me motivation is very important and for me the trick is to link it to whatever interests me at that moment.

Learning a language and speaking it fluently takes a long time and daily work. I'd say between 30 and 120 minutes every day for at least 2-3 years (depending on the language)

Hi Luca, I have some questions for you! Do you usually rely on spaced repetition through flashcards and apps (Anki is known to be the most effective one among all)? Also, do you personally believe that exposing yourself to the language through listening and reading, then write down every single word you never met before and finally repeat everyday via SR can be a good idea for the sake of language learning? Or do you find it an irremediable waste of time? I have resources which let me write them down almost automatically with sentence, audio and image related to the context (I usually spend an hour for 30 minutes of a show), but I always feel like I could do better in my language learning process.

Thanks for the question Dario! I have never used Anki nor flashcards but I do have a system to review, repeat and re-use what I learn. It is integrated in my learning schedule. At the very beginning I rely on my Bidirectional Translation method (which has a SRS system integrated). At the intermediate stage I rely on using notebooks and have fun forming short and meaningful conversations with myself by using fragments of relevant information that I extract from the material that I read, listen to and watch. I know this is a big vague but as Yoga Bliss Dance pointed out, you can watch a few Q & A sessions here on KZbin where I address these specific issues and more. That's it for now =)

@@crishayes10 Hi Crishayes, Neither do I get fluency after studying bks, and I actually learn korean by going to classes and doing some reading exercises (문화가 있는 한국어 읽기) on my own. In my case, I have initially thought of achieving fluency before my language journey but then I quickly realize that fluency really depends on which topics and I just can't be familiar with all the topics just like native. At first, I push too hard and soon experience my first burnout. Now, I shift my mindset and read fun passages in korean about korean culture and what do koreans eat etc (it's fun for me)

Hi Luca, I'm in America and I'm learning Italian (no plans to be polyglot) and I found a language partner in Italy. We exchange online. I was raving about you to her, I quote your tips etc.... After a few weeks she excitedly told me this: it turns out you coached a friend of hers years back- in Italy! She was surprised as she hadn't heard of you. The friend you coached, had nothing but good things to say about the experience. Funny such a small world once you get into a topic/hobby/profession. This was less than "six degrees of separation," across thousands of miles....

As I often say if someone thinks to much about doing something and is more concerned about the hows and whens : "Just start and think after your session about this stuff" because some people forget with time what their initially plan was. :D In this case it was not figure out the best learning method (and this itself can take a long time) but learning a new language. If the content is comprehensible, why not. However, in general I would recommend beginner resources such as ASSIMIL if you are a complete beginner

​Thanks, Luca! Seriously, I have seen this so often. Practically every KZbinr I follow (mainly language related channels like this one) regularly employ this kind of gesture. You don't seem to be able to pronounce the word "four" without putting up your hand with four fingers stuck out... But in a normal conversation nobody does this kind of thing. So what's going on here? Have you copied this from each other subconsciously? Or do you want to impress your audience with your precision? I am just curious. Whatever it is, it won't stop me from following your fantastic content. I have learned a lot over the years.
