I personally love everything about this song. To me, Go the Distance is not meant to be a mournful or slow song - it does seem like a hopeful, upbeat and fairly intense feel. It's about pushing as hard as you can until you find everything you dream, achieving. Not struggling fruitlessly.

I would actually love to hear him sing this without the upbeat background music, something simple like a piano, would really show off his voice better and create a similar feeling to the original. also these people are not trying to be better than the originals, it's just their own take on the songs, how successfull/good they are is a matter of opinion.
