Edit: Yes, they are slow to leave. No, no one's life was in danger. No, they were not heading to a fire. *Skip to 2:38 for them leaving the station*
I finally filmed the hose wagon!!!
On 8/1/18, Seattle Fire's Hose Wagon was dispatched to an overturned gasoline tanker that was leaking fuel. The foam trucks originally requested from the Boeing Airport were out of service, so Hose18 and Hose34 were sent. A services truck was also sent the the SFD warehouse to load extra foam.
SFD has two Hose Wagons. Hose18 is a 1995 E-One Protector, retrofit in 2015. It carries 500 gallons of foam (compared to 10 gallons on a standard engine) as well as 6000 feet of hose. Hose18 is based out of Station 18, in Ballard (north Seattle).
I have to give a big shout-out to loyal subscriber OklahomaEmergency ( / aajclogan )!
His question about AFA assignments last week led to me finding this page, which lists the kinds of units assigned to different incidents: data.seattle.gov/Public-Safet...
Thanks to that page, I knew that the hose wagons were sent to tanker fires so I was all ready to run out the door when I heard Hose18 get dispatched (even though it was way past my bedtime).

The hose wagon used to be commonplace in the fire department. The hose wagon used to accompany the pumper on every fire call during the steam pumper era due to the pumper’s inability to carry hose.

Almost sounds like Hose 18 was trying to build up air pressure for the breaks which could be part of the reason for delay, if anyone noticed it high idled a few times, which is what a driver would do to build up air pressure quickly.

Great catches! What is the Hose Wagon usually used for?
@lucaslaughing
@lucaslaughing 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! From what I can tell, the Hose Wagon is mainly used for its foam capabilities; it's dispatched to tanker fires, tank farm fires and train derailments with fire and/or hazmat. I'd imagine it might also be used for highrise fires if they needed to run a long length of hose to a higher floor (I guess if the standpipes weren't working for some reason).
