HARD STARTING
1. Choke (Enrich system) plugged, not properly functioning or improperly operated.

6. On high compression (over 10:1) engines, excessive voltage drop to the ignition coil can cause hard starting. A clear indication that this is the problem is that the engine wants to start after releasing the starter button.

Hey man am I glad i came across this vid , I currently have carb off and done a heavy clean , bikes a r6 2000 model , issue I’m having is bike when gets past 5k rpm bogs out and loss power , all else fine as in idle and start up, opened carb up and wow was it dirty, anyways I noticed the float wasn’t freely moving like the rest, my 3rd carbs float needle was stiff , I soaked in carb cleaner without rubber in for 5 mins had little play with it and it’s now moving freely and the float now moves like the rest. In your vid u mention it’s critical they move freely . Bikes been a pain so really hoping this is the issue , will be putting carb back on bike tomz so fingers crossed . Bikes had new plugs , coils are good, new battery , so I’m now certain the carb build up of dirt and that stuff needle is the issue , sorry for the long message haha 😆

@@lucaslst hi again mate just to let you no my issue was solved , put carb back today been out tested and wow so responsive :) . Set all fuel screws at 2.5 turns out the recommended turns, when took carb off 2 was at 4 at other 2 at 3 .thanks to your vid about where u mention the needle in float has fixed my issue and of course the carb clean but again thank a lot I’m super happy , just knowing also I’ve saved £350 I was quoted for a carb clean ,

good video ur smart need help with my 2000 gsx600f runs great but wanted more so i got kandn filters and a jet kit spark plugs oil oil filters now is like shit it idles at 4000 rpm its poping and it wont rev pass 5-6 rpm and two cilinders seem to get hot on the muffler and other two dont get that hot did what the info said on the kit but not working have any answers did 120s on the outside carbs and 17.5s on the other two and two spacers on the diafram needle and 3 turns on the fuelair screw did nothing with the floats but i did clean the carbs perty good have other jets that are bigger havent tryed them yet and the pilot jet they sent me was smaller holes then the stock ones

got my 01R6 started after 6 years sitting,sounded pretty good about to sync carbs and noticed the two "t" shaped fuel connectors both leaking...I separated the carbs to clean the choke plungers. These two parts are ridiculous in price (Yamaha 4JH-14350-00-00). I remember seeing two O-rings on each side of theses small fuel line "T" branches...wonder if theses small O rings in the newer blue ethanol resistant blue color would solve the leak?

You seem to know a great deal about 98-02 R6.. Mine keeps back firing when trying to start to the point it won't start.. A guy claimed he knew how to bench sync but failed.. Before I took it to him it was running but loose of power throughout rpms like a vacuum but no leaks.. How do I sync the carbs correctly?

all the way. only one that varies is the fuel air idle. don't touch that lol

HORNET6 the service manual says two whole turns out from all the way in for the pilot screws, if you have an aftermarket filter it will be different.

Awesome stuff bro! I'm a new subscriber, I love your work! I have a question though, I recently got my first bike which is a 1995 zx6r. It was my brother's and he had it parked for a few years so now I'm trying to get it riding again but it has an issue where it keeps missing between low and mid range. I washed a lot of rust out of the tank and today I cleaned the carbs again somewhat and tried starting it but it refused to start and i realized that only one cylinder was firing when I felt the down pipe. Would really appreciate some advice if possible. Wish I could just send my carbs to you or the whole bike for that matter.

anythought about what to look for when buying a r6 that has been sitting? Its a 2009 but not quite sure the miles the battery is dead and what not and i did notice that the front break lever has no feedback? any ideas would be great

Jarrod Nocito Well, for starters tell the owner to either charge up the battery or get a new one. I wouldn't even consider a bike until the engine is running and I can hear for any problems. Second you posted this in a carb video for Yamaha's older than 02's. Not sure if you're asking about the the carbs but anything past an 02' from 03 and on have FI engines (Fuel Injected). And when you say front break lever has no feedback what exactly does that mean? When you pull it, it doesn't return to it's position? Check the cable. Also ask for the title. If it's a salvage title I wouldn't consider it. Bike most likely got dropped and can have a host of problems that will cost you more in the long run.

+Rak Hit thanks for the reply I bought the bike had 5300 miles all it needed was tank cleaned and all new fluids and set of new tires. the brakes just needed to be bled that was all. fresh gas and new battery started right up and have put about 2700 miles on her already and love the new bike!

i just went and started my 02 r6 today after being stored over the winter and now its leaking gas from the square(ish) plastic things that go into the carb its not coming from the fuel lines running to them but seems like its coming from where they meet the actual carbs themselves. so if you could message me back on any advice u might have that would be great otherwise I hate to fork out a lot of money to take it to the Yamaha dealer but I will do that if you are not able to make a suggestion on how to fix it.

Austin young You probably already got bent over for that repair but if it is leaking there it is most likely the orings that are in those connections. It could be the actual little pieces of fuel line connecting them which would be easy. If it is the orings then that requires complete dis-assembly of the carbs, more than in this video. They need to be removed and then taken apart from the rack that holds them together. Then the orings can be replaced. Do not go to the dealer though, it will most likely be around $400-500. Find a good local shop(check regional forums) and it should be more like $200-250.

+Austin young , could be that with the cold the joints cracked on the carb, inspect for leaks, try changing the leaking plastic joints or putting some engine joint putty .

Austin young some really good fuel dye and a light will help isolate the leak, it's easy to get lost in old gas puddles and stains - actually just pull it all apart and do the full rebuild, you'll get many more problem free miles that way
