In this video I react to Alexander Volkanovski's post fight press conference at UFC 294 following his loss to Islam Makhachev. Volkanovski mentioned that he struggles when he doesn't have a fight to prepare for, and I think that there are reasons to be in some way concerned. What do you guys think? You called this, and I agreed fully. You said Volk would get finished, and that it would be the beginning of the end for him. He let the fame get to him, he “backed his own skills” but really he bought his own hype and said he was impossible to submit and that he can’t be finished. Imagine if he goes at Topuria in January and gets KO’d, and then gets KO’d in the rematch. This short notice fight was a horrific idea. You nailed it when you said he was on the verge of greatness. It’s common for a lot of athletes to become depressed or mentally unwell because of the inability to compete, whether it’s retirement, injury, or just waiting for a fight, I think volk has to work on himself for a while and not just physically but mentally as well, figure out why he maybe feels anxious or purposeless when he’s not fighting.

Look, being a fan for one or the other aside, it was not really a fight, either way. Volk didn't even really do anything! Seemingly he had some kind blackout? And afterwards he probably just most regretted this missed opportunity; because he knows he will not be getting a rematch any time soon. Because i recognize the manner in which volk is talking and have an idea of whats going on in his head and it's not pretty. i've been there myself, in a very different way but ive been there. the way he says he needs it, the tears that come out when he talks about having to be in camp and fighting, it's a different kind of desperation there. signs of low self esteem and hidden demons, because if he doesnt have that than he feels worthless. people have probably called him such throughout his life. there was one line in particular where he said he feels he needs to "tick of all the boxes with checks" or something, that speaks volumes. It alludes to the idea that he can never let go and always has to maintain someway somehow by staying on top of things and being that guy, being THE guy, the dude. Fighting is his drug, and he's starting to face that brutal realization now, and having to entertain how he's going to be without the drug and it's scary for him. a lot of demons there fs

Male mental health is important. There are amazing sports psychologists who can work through tough mental states with athletes and that is something everyone should always consider doing. Especially in this MMA and lifting community where everyone wants to be an Alpha Male a dude who stuggles with depression often gets insulted as a weak soy boy if he wants to get therapy instead of just toughing it out like a real man. Dudes, real Alphas know when they are out of their depth and need help, only fools dont recognize when there's a challenge which you cannot possibly take all by yourself. The UFC drain all the champions they have fighters pulling out , keeping fighters in limbo some doing multiple weight cuts waiting for a opponent, that's y imo u see champion sort of losing the belt on purpose or having out of the blue bad performances , look at Izzy if you look at a lot of champions it's like they get so many defences then just lose n never usually get it back

Or...maybe.. you're watching an interview from Volk who, I believe was the first up out of the main and co main, who hadn't digested the loss and the tears painted a heavier picture than what was actually there. You saw a champion coming to terms, in real time, that he will probably never get another shot at the 155 belt. Maybe this was a stream of consciousness where as he was analyzing and problem solving while compromised. As far as If I'm not fighting, "it's doing my head in" I wouldn't be so quick to label this as the thing that pins him to a positive reality. I know plenty of people, professionals and retirees that have nerotic reactions to not being engaged. He needs a few days. Then do and interview and we will get a picture of the man with a bit more perspective.

No, it is concerning. Because i recognize the manner in which volk is talking and have an idea of whats going on in his head and it's not pretty. i've been there myself, in a very different way but ive been there. the way he says he needs it, the tears that come out when he talks about having to be in camp and fighting, it's a different kind of desperation there. signs of low self esteem and hidden demons, because if he doesnt have that than he feels worthless. people have probably called him such throughout his life. there was one line in particular where he said he feels he needs to "tick of all the boxes with checks" or something, that speaks volumes. It alludes to the idea that he can never let go and always has to maintain someway somehow by staying on top of things and being that guy, being THE guy, the dude. Fighting is his drug, and he's starting to face that brutal realization now, and having to entertain how he's going to be without the drug and it's scary for him. a lot of demons there fs

Experence isn't a 1 to 1 thing. 1. You've been there yourself. Ok, you and Volk are the exact same. 2. You clearly recognize whats going on in Volks head. 3. After the KO loss and this post fight presser I can see max possibly beating Volk if Max wins the interim belt against Topuria. Volk is 35 and maybe he won’t be the same after this and Max is only 31. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Max regains the fw title

Max has still got it and still seems to be hungry. Outside of the Volk losses his last few wins were Kattar, Rodriguez, Allen, and Zombie. Doesn’t seem to be slowing down if you ask me
