Lucayan National Park - Bens Cave - Gold Rock Beach - BEST Things to do in Grand Bahama

Ben's Cave is one of the two inland blue holes within The Lucayan National Park. This natural feature is definitely a sight to see. The clear upper portion of the water within the cave is fresh. It floats on top of the lower saltwater. The passages within this cavern system extend horizontally for thousands of yards and it is deemed to be one of the longest surveyed cavern systems in the world. If you want to dive here, you must be accompanied by an authorized dive instructor. During the dive, a showcase of interesting features will be on display such as stalactites, stalagmites, a halocline, fossilized conch shells, bivalves, & more.
Lucayan National Park is a 40 acres. It was established in 1977. It the most popular of the islands 3 parks. It incorporates one of the largest underwater cave systems in the world, with two caves open to the public. Swimming in the caves is prohibited, and a special permit is required for diving. Nature trails & boardwalks lead to a variety of ecosystems. .
Gold Rock Beach is part of The Lucayan National Park. The beach is located 25 miles from Freeport. The beach is breath taking stretching for what seems like the length of a football field at low tide and... the beach is secluded. This beach is referred to as Grand Bahama Island's "welcome mat." There are BBQ pits, picnic tables and benches here, but no other amenities. North of the beach (across the street) are the Lucayan Caverns, the world's longest surveyed underground cave system.

In the mid 1990s I went diving here with UNEXSO. I had the privilege of being led by Ben Rose for whom the cavern is named! My most vivid memories are watching the divers ahead of me pass through the halocline where the fresh water meets the salt water. The visual effect was like those ahead of me were being “energized” like in the transporter from Star Trek. When I also passed through the halocline, everything became clear again. Incredible effect! My other memory was lugging my dive gear up that spiral staircase.. Definitely an experience not to be missed!

Thank you! You will love it. It was the GoPro 9 or 10. I just noticed Costco has the GoPro 11 on sale. I'd recommend it for sure. Did you see my video swimming with the stingrays & sharks. I highly recommend that one. I send the link to that video shortly.

This may be a dumb question but I'm traveling there in july,how can I check if the tide is low before we head out there? Also can you rent snorkel gear somewhere?

As far as the tide goes, we just got lucky. But there are tide charts that you can just google. I would bet there are places to rent snorkel gear, but I'm not sure where. We always bring our own.

That’s a great question. We were not there on a cruise but I believe you can get transportation from the port via taxi.
