Luffy's tiny punch is so adorable! BTW Kokoro was a coworker of Tom, who was a FIshman. She also met her human husband, when she came to Water 7, and that's why she remained in Water 7 even after Tom's death. And why her granddaughter is human. But, yeah, our first mermaid is a depressed raging alcoholic granny. I love Kokoro, though. I love the trio for the difference of how they tried to process grief: Franky became even more rebelious, Iceberg put all of his feelings into working as hard as he could and Kokoro started drinking. I think Franky's "death" put her over the edge.

Killing the hostages was a government power play. Those hostages were 500 of the kingdom's soldiers which means they wouldn't be able to stop a more aggressive government take over forcing that country to have to pay celestial tribute forever as the true cost for government aid in their war.

This is how Chimney was able to save Luffy from the whirlpools btw. In a q&a Oda tells us Kokoro had a half mermaid son with a human, that son then has a child with a human, making Chimney 1/4th mermaid allowing her to be an extremely great swimmer

Something interesting to note is that the whole Lucci flashback is exclusive to the anime. In the manga, we just got a brief summary of the incident. And on that note, as far as his age is concerned, he's 28 years old.... the same age as Robin, coincidentally enough. But yeah, as you can see, Lucci's philosophy of "dark justice" aligns quite nicely with the "absolute justice" of those vice admirals.... scary. 😨

Kokoro being a mermaid was kind of foreshadowed with little "hints". Mostly that she can talk to frogs.
