She was sighted on the gnarled tree where a parent was also perched, landing at 6:44 (camera time) this morning. She's safe and sound, and flew in beautifully!

I just found this nest recently. What a beautiful eaglet this is. Looks like there is no shoreline there. If she went in the water, could she get out??? Usually eaglets try the water in small steps until they feel safe. I do hope she is okay. She was having such a good time. Nice video. Thank you. 😢

Hi Patsy! Yes, it is a beautiful but harsh environment. I have seen eagles swim (not here) but this little creature is new to the world around her, so I don't know how well she would cope. Having said that, she has been heard on camera, so she is around somewhere - just out of our sight :) My guess is that she landed below the nest, and gradually hopped her way around.

Hi! I am not entirely sure, but I seem to remember the chance of naming an eagle comes from people making donations to the Institute For Wildlife Studies. Personally, I don't know what Cholyn means - I have looked it up and saw a couple of sites linking it to numerology (it had me lost in no time!). If anybody knows, the best bet are moderators Janntonne and MIBDave, who are very involved and have a lot of experience with the Channel Islands and the eagles there. They tend to pop up on the live feed chats in the evening California time, sometimes earlier. I have read that Toyon was chosen by school kids who camped at Toyon Bay on Catalina Island. It is the name of a California shrub of the same family as roses.

@Tbascoebuzz I am pleased to say that Janntonne has kindly provided an answer as to the origin of the name Cholyn - it is a combination of the name of a lady viewer and that of her husband's, which they have used throughout the duration of their marriage (51 years).
