It's unbelievable how you cover all the topics that are so important and with such an understanding and ability to explain and teach them with such a clarity! Thank you! I was just these days struggling with posture as I understood that I'm not having good one and this cleared alot now! For all other tall people here, I'm 1.93m, with long arms and torso. And when I started playing flamenco about 11 years ago, I copied the cross-legged posture of Paco. I had tried the traditional flamenco posture sporadically before but always abandoned, as I thought it makes picados, arpeggios.. etc harder. But about 2 years ago I started seriously practicing playing in it, and I had a break through.... My experience is that it's all an illusion, after sticking with it for a few months, my body adapted to the traditional posture which I now find superior in every possible way. I can now play things like Guajiras de Lucia and Plaza Alta no problem... And of course, you don't get lower back pain and your legs don't fall asleep, you can hear your instrument better and get better feed back and also the back of the guitar vibrates better, switching right hand positions between thumb techniques and finger style techniques becomes more intuitive, your left hand moves easier along the neck when the neck is that higher, and overall I find that one becomes more emotionally connected to the guitar in the traditional posture. I think Juan Martin was spot on when he said in his book, and I'm paraphrasing, that (even if you don't end up playing in it all the time), mastering the traditional posture is a must for any flamenco player.

Thank you so much for all this effort maestro! You are amazing as always and tremendously helpful to many people. I always use crossed leg and I got many times numb leg during performances.. I would say in all performances I was not playing classical with the classical position. This video was a joy to watch! Jeronimo Maya who is also VERY tall uses a crossed leg but not so much close to the ankle but closer to the knee to manage less leg tension, numbness and optimum height of the guitar. It has helped me a lot with shorter chairs. Anyway.. Muchas Gracias por todo maestro! Salud y un abrazo fuerte!

Thank you for watching as always Andreas! I didn't know Jeronimo Maya is tall! Hello! depends on your back, how you are built, you can develop big problems on a long way to play legs crossed. Make sure to strech often and feel if your back is doing ok. So i bought a pad to put on my leg (any leg) and play without problem. The pad also prevents to use a footstand which can unbalanced your back and shoulders on a long period of time. I guess i was'nt naturally built to play guitar and i play all day long. This way i dont feel any pressure anywhere. I also use it (pad) for practicing electric guitar without a strap cause i started to have neck problems years ago. When i started to use the pad, all problems went away. I thought of saying cause i had a few little problems that prevent me to play like the flamenco positions. Even as a kid i had problem to have a good position at classical.

Very nice video and important topics that are rarely discussed especially the part about the chair since it makes all the difference when playing cross legged. I hope that you make a separate video on what to look for when choosing flamenco chair and how to determine the chair height based on ones anatomy. BTW, I never thought of Paco having huge hands and they're definitely smaller than Vincent's Amigo's, Grisha Goryachev's and yours I think:)
@LucianoGhosn4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Duraid! Paco's hands are HUGE! I would imagine like 20% bigger than mine. I don't know about Grisha or Vicente's size of hands, but Paco was indeed enormous. Haha Cheers!
@duraidh72994 жыл бұрын
@@LucianoGhosn I think the impression that I have about his hand size comes from the cover of the album "Paco de Lucía interpreta a Manuel de Falla " which kind of indicates a maximum stretch for his left hand. But hey.. it's not a proof and I never shook his hand:)

Good observations ...arm must be paralell to the guitar's tapa
@albertolopezadrados82822 жыл бұрын
Having the guitar at an angle is difficult for picado unless you have very short arms. Your elbow is closer to the body meaning you can hold it without effort easier. Classical guitarists use this position so they have an optimal paralel shape of the left hand and the neck. Thats why they always have such beautiful finger placement on the neck, and their fingers get less bunched up, making it easier to play notes more clearly.

So right! We never talk about the anatomy of players. If you are super tall or have long arms you are at such a disadvantage. I have long arms and Big hands. If you are tall with long arms you need almost perfect upright posture to do picados... or hike your elbow up to like 90° So good for analyzing this. Tall people with long arms are at such a disadvantage. You really need to be short person with a small length of arms and Huge hands I think. But if you have a long spine you are at a disadvantage I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I think Paco had great anatomy. Not too tall, short arms and big hands

To my knowledge this is the first video talking not only about posture but also about anatomy in flamenco. Speaking of anatomy, Vicente's fingers have an unusual quality in that the top joint can kind of bend backwards. I find it really odd to look at how he does picados, for instance. I am not sure if such a large degree of backward joint mobility is helpful, but he sure plays like the great master that he is.
