Great question! Not hate at all! I have also been told the same thing by past teachers, especially in marching band back in high school or as a younger student. To me, playing an instrument is never done the same by every musician since every body is physically different, so it feels counterintuitive to stress everyone playing the same exact way. I grew up imitating a lot of flutists - Jean Pierre Rampal, Julius Baker, Denis Bouriakov - none of who play in a perpendicular line if you look at old videos/photos, which gave me confidence to play the way that felt comfortable to me. I just found that I was able to produce the best sound, especially in an orchestra, in a more relaxed position where I can really direct my air down the flute (not across) and breathe into the right side of my body. Not to say I’m not constantly working on being better and having a better playing position, I definitely am, there’s always room to improve! If your teacher is asking you to bring your flute up, maybe ask them why! A lot of teachers will say what to do and not explain why, for instance, maybe your pitch is low and bringing the flute up helps with pitch. Maybe your posture is suffering and constricting your air flow so your phrases lose momentum and bringing your flute up helps that. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little if there’s a type of sound you’re going for! If I’m playing a super quiet passage with no vibrato, my flute and head position is raised high and rolled out to optimize pitch because that’s the sound I want. Overall, I have been through many teachers, conservatories, orchestras, etc, and just found that this is how I play with the flute at a more depressed angle. Not better or worse, just how I’ve become accustomed to optimizing sound! Hope this helps!
