It's hard to see what they offer over Tesla, except for range, for a lot more money. They don't look that great, and they don't have a future with self driving. There will be issues with new vehicles, I don't see that as a big issue. Everyone has recalls, that's not a big deal. However, their cars are too complex to make cheaply enough to make a profit, even at the very high price. With this sort of luxury car, you can't achieve any significant economies of scale either. I feel sure they will fix their technical problems, but there's not much you can do if the design can't be manufactured easily enough. Frankly, I can't see them surviving in any significant size. Maybe they will keep struggling on as a niche ultra luxury brand, but I somehow doubt it.

Lucid Air and Tesla Model 3 were unveiled in the same year - 2016. And look, where are both companies now. Lucid has chronically the culture of not delivering. The company will never recover. And nobody will buy it - as the product is out of touch with current market needs. They have technology which is irrelevant for current market. See trends in Tesla and BYD. And if you really want to buy luxury sedan or better - SUV, you have a reliable choice in Tesla Model S/X, Mercedes EQS/EQC, BMW i7/iX or some Chinese brand like NIO.

My guess is.. the Saudi's DO have deep enough pockets.. the question is, do they want to. I think they do actually. We'll see. This recall and any other issues Lucid is having, is really no surprise. This is why successful start up car companies are few and far between. There's going to be teething problems when new companies pop up with completely new internal designs. You only work the bugs out over time and large scale real world use. And there aren't many people willing to plonk down $150k to be a Guinee pig. Tesla only survived through dogged determination and basically the will of one man pushing an extremely good team. And they made it by the skin of their teeth a few years back in model 3 production. Lucid doesn't seem to have that will in leadership.. they will survive by the good will of the Saudis.. or some other investor or a take over. Rivian is basically in the same boat.. and they'll survive by the good will of Amazon.. or not.

To be fair many EV startups are having major growing pains. Lucid is not the only one as I’ve heard many Rivians being bricked as well recently. I just hope they all can get through this hardship. I really want Aptera, Rivian, Lucid, Canoo and many other to succeed but it’s going to be very difficult especially with these interest rates. I couldn’t afford to buy our house nor the vehicle I drive today with these high interest rates. Cheers!
@ecospider5

If you plan on living in a house for multiple decades then buying when interest rates are high will cause the house to cost less. Then when the interest rates go back down you refinance. In that scenario you eventually have a smaller loan and a low interest rate. The house prices have not gone down everywhere yet. I think that’s because the rates increased so quickly.

I phrase this a little differently. I hope all those companies are being run well and have good executives. If they do they will survive. If some of them are not being run well I hope they don’t survive. Because if they do that probably means they got help just because they were an EV company. And I don’t think propping up bad companies is a good idea. Especially if you want a strong economy in the long term.

@pete6122 I would mainly agree. But that public money rarely goes to complete waste because a good management team will buy the factory, equipment, and IP for pennies on the dollar. So in the end it created a factory in the US. On certain technologies the government funding is required, because other countries have recognized the technology as the future and are offering money for people to make factories in their country. This was a big affect of the US inflation reduction act. A whole bunch of foreign auto makers stopped building plants for EV’s and have moved those plants to the United States.

Lucid has zero chance. I've been saying this from the beginning, the whole ecosystem of charging is the key. Always has been. No one's buying an EV and looking forward to charing at those trash EVGo or Electrify America chargers. Everyone is hoping hard that TSLA opens more chargers up to non TSLA autos. Everyone was TOO FOCUSED on the end product to step back and realize this. And if you doubt what I'm saying why is Mercedes building out a 2,800 charger network of their own in the US? And what's even worse for the other EV competitors is TSLA and their Gigapress. They're gonna be pumping out so many more cars along with their battery partners that they have a massive lead of at least 15 years. And what will be the true test of that? When this next massive recession hits and EV subsidies go to shit there'll be graveyards of EV startups and EV lines of established legacy automakers (Ford) that TSLA will be the only game in town and maybe a few others. Toyota and VW group will maintain dominance because petroleum is still king and everyone will be caught lacking when this new reality kicks in.

VW and Toyota's profit all comes from China, US, and the EU. China will reach 50% of all new car sales being EV this year (if not there already). VW made 50% of their profits from sales in China....no more. The US's EV adoption trend lines show that it will be at 50% in 2026. The EU will be at 50% by 2025 or sooner. By 2030 it will be all over with more than 90% of all car sales being EV in all three markets where ALL their profit is made. This means that VW and Toyota would have to be selling 90% EVs to maintain their profits. Currently they make only negligible profits in other markets as their cars are too expensive for those markets. How then can gas be King? Gas stations will start collapsing within five years in the US as their patrons no longer come in to buy chips and beer (where the stations make their money). Gas refineries will start shutting down to avoid a glut on the market and a price crash will occur until that happens. By end of this decade it will be hard to find gas stations at all as more older cars break and are replaced.... very little demand for gas. Don't believe me? Look at what happened during Covid when gas sales went way down. Oil consumption went from 100 million barrels per day to 70 million. This caused oil prices to plummet to 20 dollars a barrel and lower and caused the end of fracking oil up in Montana. A lot of gas refineries shut down during that time too because of the glut. By 2028 there will be a similar lack of gas demand as there was during the worst of Covid but then it will continue to get worse and worse as EV sales continue to ramp. Many Oil companies will go bust as they will have huge loans for oil rigs and equipment that they cannot pay back. So Toyota and VW will make money on their gas cars how? I don't see how they could even give them away by 2030. It will be like hydrogen cars.... no where to fuel them unless you live certain places in California.

You're right on the money. Layoffs are due to lack of demand, and a plethora of issues with their cars for customers expecting it to be better than other luxury vehicles such as Mercedes or Lexus. Should hardly be a comparison (one would think) for vehicle that costs well over $140K USD but on the contrary. And sadly, current macro economics headwind will be too much for many EV startups to say it modestly. I remember Jay Leno said on one of his videos during Lucid Air review and paraphrase "... once there were over 300+ car manufacturers and now there are only few remaining.." Last point I want to make is that when company layoff workers to survive, people that decides who gets axed are usually the ones that created the problems in the first place and the end result may be in the short term, stock may do okay at best. But, unless the fundamental root cause eliminated, chances of long term solvency will be minimal. Most of job cuts are those that are involved in making the product; so now it's a catch 22 situation where they cut people making the product but due to lack of demand, and not making the products will not generate revenue. Also, those jobs are not high paying jobs, mostly on par with minimum wage for line workers and below industry average salary for supervisory roles. They should not have wasted so much seed capital into putting them into posh Studios that people will stop by for novelty and once they see what the sticker ("shock") say they will turn around and run. So how does 1,111 h.p. and 500+ mile EPA range help save the company? I am already seeing lots of messages on LinkedIn for good and hard working people who got axed due to cuts posting messages looking for work. I do not see a positive outlook for this company based on what is happening in the industry. Right now, cash is king and they are running in short supply. I would not be surprised if they are already in talks to sell off the company in piecemeal. Arizona factory is likely to change ownership first and some will be relocated to Saudi Arabia to complete the AMP-2 build so that the cars can be made there under different management and branding.
@nickmcconnell1291
@nickmcconnell1291 Жыл бұрын
Lucid was trying to follow Tesla's example and create a luxury car first to gain a good reputation. The problem is that Lucid's engineers designed a car that was not easily built with automation and they set up a production factory that was much larger than they needed. The expense of that factory is amortized across each car they build which results in a large loss. Only if they could max out the factory with car production would they stand a chance of making money. Lucid made a cardinal error, they tried to run without learning to walk first. I think Tesla is starting to realize that they may play a much larger role in the transition to EVs than they thought as more and more EV makers start to fail. This explains the massive scale up of Master Plan 3. Tesla may end up as the only EV maker with any scale other than BYD. It will be mainly up to these two companies and manufacturers of very small EVs (Wuling?) to get us through this needed transition.

It is also concerning that the website is not US based so not subject to US SEC regulation. The pay wall thing is really what gets me, it's an insanely expensive paywall and I would be very curious how that news got out.. literally the Twitter account has less than 1000 followers so.... just seems like someone playing a game to initiate a short squeeze or manipulate the stock. Just to put it perspective, seekingalpga has 100 X the webtraffic, heck a Javascript Dungeons and dragons generator made by a pathologist has a magnitude web traffic than betaville (where the Lucid rumor started).. so what I mean, very fishy that Betaville rumor would be taken so seriously.

What people and investors fail to see is that scaling manufacturing is hard, very hard. Even niche volume manufacturing is not easy and BEV's is the hardest because there is soo much new tech that has to be integrated it is a nightmare. The supply chains and logistics as well. So all BEV manufactures are not created equal. Hooefully Aptera will fair better than lusid given they have Sandy Monro working with them but he can not make the company a success on his own. Aperta have not shown me how they plan to do all the above things when it comes to manufacturing and,supply chains to become a volume manufacturer. They have less of a stressful task since they only need small battery packs buy their cars need the tech and need to be reliable and well built.

I think Lucid should merge with Ford as Ford's premium brand as Lincoln is a joke, only for senior citizens. Lucid has a great car, but, only 1 great car, they need a smaller sedan as well. There are WAY too many auto manufacturers and auto brands in the world, they need to combine or phase out to exist. Lucid is battling in a very small market class of premium, very expensive, large EV sedans with: Mercedes, Tesla, BMW, Audi and Porsche, all whom have established, large customer bases. Lucid should merge quick, or die off.

It would make sense for them to buy lucid, but GM is not capable of merging them into GM and utilizing what they bought. GM is too broken as a company. Ford admitted the efficiency in the mach-e and lightning are jokes back in january. They claim to be doing ground up redesigns to improve efficiency for new versions using LFP. They won't need lucid if they are already doing it. Ford also cannot afford to buy them.

What he called "slashing" the workforce by 30% was actually an 18% adjustment of the workforce in response to economic conditions. The stock began to rise shortly afterward, and some firms upgraded the stock from "sell" to "hold" status. That shows market confidence in Lucid's actions, not the beginning of a descent into oblivion that this video suggests. It's one thing to give an opinion. It has nothing to do with testing or QC. Even if the Lucid was PERFECT in every way, you do know that at $120,000 the Lucid Air is still not profitable, because they have not achieved economies of scale and with raw materials going through the roof, these cars should be priced 20% higher to keep Lucid viable.
