After watching this I researched Ike's career. His work as a producer and songwriter is very impressive, his influence is understated. His early life would make a fascinating movie or series. A young black man in the 1950s working as a producer at Sun Records and searching for talent in the segregated South while leading his own band. He records "Rocket 88" which is considered the first Rock n roll song, then he moves to St. Louis and transforms the city with a new sound. Imagine the characters: Sam Phillips, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Pinetop Perkins, Sonny Boy Williamson, Otis Rush.

@tonicarter1322
@tonicarter1322 2 жыл бұрын
@@icandesire What abusive status? Ike was never charged with abuse but I'm sure you've watched movies by plenty of actors and directors, and listened to music by music by musicians who were abusive. Most have been forgiven for their transgressions and their contributions are prioritized over their personal life. Tina has a large platform to tell stories about their relationship from her perspective but that doesn't make it all truthful. Whatever you think about Ike, he was a pioneer and his musical contributions are important.
@icandesire
@icandesire 2 жыл бұрын
@@tonicarter1322 No one’s doubting that he was a pioneer. He was just a pioneer that was abusive and doesn’t deserve my accolades. The same goes to artists who are abusive. I’m sure if this was your mother you wouldn’t have the same stance. That’s my last reply. Don’t bother.

@@icandesire Ike was never charged for abuse like many artists who are accused of abuse. There are no legal records to support Tina's claims. She wasn't an innocent victim. According to some people, Tina was violent herself. Ike admitted they had fights but it wasn't one-sided. Tina chose to stay with him all those years and benefited from their relationship as much as he did. Ike's accolades are for his career not his personal life. He did his time for the drug charges. His accolades were hard-earned and he contributed to the development of blues and rock & roll. What are your accolades?

Since understanding how much childhood trauma shapes your adult life - hearing that Ike Turner was sexually abused from the age of 6 by 3 grown woman shows me he was angry at all woman from that young age. He made sure all woman suffered because in his little 6 year old mind, all woman were predators and out to get him. He had a “get them before they get me” mentality. This is why it is SO important to protect and love your children at all costs. Their future depends on it
@bluesugar58
@bluesugar58 2 жыл бұрын
Being sexually abused so young twisted his perception on sex. When Ike talks about being preyed on by grown women in his book, he said he wasn't traumatized. "That's probably why every relationship I was in was surrounded by sex. Sex was power to me," he said. I don't think he had the mentality to make all women suffer. A majority of his defenders are women he helped. He hired a lot of women and most say they never witnessed any violence from him. However, he was self admittedly selfish when it came to his needs in a relationship and he expressed remorse later in his life.

Tina could perform with anyone and always carrie the show. She shined all by herself. It was no surprise when she decided to go solo. That was pretty much expected from anyone with unique talent. Redd Foxx was open about his cocaine addiction and Elvis Presley reportedly used liquid cocaine. Ike and Tina had a residency at the International Hotel with Redd Foxx and Elvis in 1969. It's possible that's when they introduced Ike to cocaine. When Elvis was still a truck driver, her used to sneak into black clubs in West Memphis to watch Ike play piano. Ike said many years later Elvis approached him at the International Hotel and asked if he remembered him. That's when he realized he was the white boy who used to watch him play.

I appreciate this documentary and I respect Ike’s genius. The documentary was mostly focused on Ike’s talent and his own personal trauma and downfalls. Definitely necessary to hear about his life and pursuit of happiness. I believe he severely abused Tina. Even if Hollywood embellished certain aspects, we know he was a brutal husband and drug addict. People who try to blame Tina for the abuse she suffered are sick in the head. No human is completely evil or good, and in that way neither was Ike. But they say you know them by the fruit they bear. Look at how both their lives ended and it tells you all you need to know.

I was treated badly by parents who should have known better. My grandmother drank; she was also abusive to us. My father left after my folks bitterly divorced. I did not become a criminal. I turned my anger inward, drinking and not taking care of myself, for years. But I managed to turn it around. I am 74, and look back with sadness on things I missed out on. But I have a happy marriage, and a full, rich life. I am no victim. Only, of my own past stupidity, I guess. I blame no one. Only me, for not making changes.

Sometimes you dont completely recover from a murdered parent, multiple childhood rapes, and growing up in the midst of vicious racism that could have you killed every single day. I agree. Childhood trauma and abuse is very difficult to overcome as demonstrated by our prisins full of men and women who were abused and traumatized as young people. 80 percent of female hard drug addicted prostitutes were sexually abused as youngsters. Unless you've had this happen to you as a youngster, you really shouldn't be passing judgement. Nevertheless it's a reason for negative adult behavior that hurts others, but not an excuse. People still need to protect themselves from harm some of these harmed folks perpetuate to others. I do believe everyone, prisoners too, should be treated humanely, respectfully and compassionately. 16:18

I understand both the trauma they went through, i believe Ike felt a huge boost of ego when he saw Tina with the talent he felt it was his rise to reach the top of course he must have loved her, but then realized, Tina came from nothing and he worked hard for his position that when Tina started to get noticed and he start disappearing from view, it unlocked a hatred and insecurity that he was not good enough. So the hate started piling when he noticed she was a “fool in love” for him. Then he takes the advantage of hitting, anger, and his own dark world instead of trying to build better he wanted to be the one loved. I feel for his trauma, but it also does not excuse him to putting and building his own trauma on a woman who thought the world of him already.
