You sure been getting your exercise today, sorry to hear about the little calf..... hope the rest go smooth for you! Glad the weather is going to be better, a lot more work when freezing, not much fun. Glad you're having a busy calving week!

Having a soft spot for all animals. As a fellow cattle guy. Yes it needs to be taken care of. I’m really surprised that inflation hasn’t started. No matter how hard hearted our kids think we are. It still hurts. We all or at least I enjoy every new birth with a smile and a special feeling. Also very sad when we loose one😢.

Ya i don't enjoy these decisions. You gotta do what you gotta do but I had I neighbor say " if one finds these decisions easy and no big deal, then maybe they aren't cowboys"

What a shame, such a beautiful calf. I watched a video yesterday where they put one of those legs on a probably one year old calf. That thing was running and jumping around, it was so happy! Get the govt to pay for it, isn't that what we pay our taxes for? It was a hereford.

We looked into getting it amputated and then going that route. Sadly it just doesn't make sense. At least not from what we are seeing.

Yeah, makes sense, but just such a beautiful calf. It would be a horrible way to live for sure. Awful luck for you guys, you all do such a wonderful job!

So sorry to hear about the little guy with the bum foot. If you want to try some things, here's what I would do if it were one of my beef calves. I know you're in Canada, so I don't know what products are available to you. Have you tried DMSO on the foot and along his back/spine? I would also try a poultice for the swelling, a shot of Draxxin for the swelling and a shot of banamine for the pain. Good luck and we'll be praying for you guys.
@TwinElmFarms
@TwinElmFarms Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks. I gave him 2 shot of metacam, and I only learned of Draxxin this morning when a neighbor came by and told me it's a much cheaper form. I don't know what DMSO is? I guess the big issue I think is that it froze and minimal blood flow. I'm thinking it's too late at this point for anything. The hide is starting to get gross. But if something like this ever happens again, it would be great to know different tricks or ideas.

@@TwinElmFarms So sorry to hear it might be too late, depending on deep the frostbite is. Most of the time they should recover, or I think they would, given time, because the deep tissue may still be healthy. I'm not a vet or doctor, and I only saw a few seconds of his foot on your video clip. I'm just sorry you're having to go through this. No farmer wants to see his cattle in this condition and I'm sure it's breaking your heart. So, I'm sorry. Draxxin is very expensive in the states, so we only use it on calves because they don't need as much as a cow would. For our cows, we typically use LA300. DMSO is a wonder drug that I feel too few people know about. Commonly it's used as an anti-inflammatory. I pick it up in the horse aisle at my local feed store. Sometimes I'll use it in a poultice, sometimes I'll mix it with linament, and sometimes, if I don't have Epsom salt or linament, I'll mix it with mouthwash like Listerine. I use it for my own arthritis and inflammation with just a little dab on a cotton ball. A little goes a long way. tinyurl.com/muebwtzw

And when I'm getting an animal in the chute to treat for foot rot with LA300, I always do a drench of their foot in 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% iodine. Helps clean up any bacteria from cuts, etc. I know they're going back out in the mud or grass, but it's just one more measure I've found to work.

We usually have a broken leg or two every year. Our vet casts them and they get better in a few weeks. Here in Colorado it hasn't been too expensive. The swelling is concerning
@TwinElmFarms
@TwinElmFarms Жыл бұрын
A broken leg may have been easier. The fact that it was frozen for who knows how long, the blood flow is nil and its cold to touch.

Bag balm is salve for a sunburned or chapped udder, might help circulation, I don't know for sure, should help on his skin.

I know it hard to have to put a calf down, but 99% of us non ranchers are paying exorbitant prices for lousy feed lot beef. I would love to get a calves liver like I got 30 years ago. It doesn't exist, even from the local private butcher. That's my 3 cents. It used to be 2 cents but... Inflation.... Keep doing good work. I love your videos.

I hear ya, I would have a hard time buying beef from a store. Our local butcher is great, lots of watered down, fatty ground beef in stores and the steaks aren't marbled. I like knowing where our meat is coming from but not everyone understands the difference.

@@TwinElmFarms they have been doing it for about 20 years You seem to care about your cattle most rancher probably not even give the calf any type of chance just put it down But I can tell in your videos that you seem to care Horse plus got vet full time on site vet facility on site they seem To really care do what’s best for animals in their care Please consider contacting them about injured calf I understand it’s your decision They have rescued calves before they got experience with calves I would be willing to donate money or I’m willing to put a deposit on the calf until final arrangements could be made Seems like beautiful calf deserves chance to live !

Sorry to inform but the calf was going in the wrong direction and I felt we needed to put him down earlier in the week. I did look up the horse humane society and from what I found, that is in the USA. I didn't see that in Canada. I really hate that part of having livestock. We work all year too help raise and keep all the calves as healthy as possible.
