And that, ladies and gents, is why I switched from trumpet to tuba. My lips just couldn't keep up. I tried taking breaks and long tones, but after almost 4 years, my lips refused to play anything higher than a G above the staff, which is a problem for 1st chair marching music. I already knew how to play trombone, and my band director asked for volunteers wanting to switch to tuba. I volunteered right as we got back to the band room. I am now a happy tuba player. I can still read trumpet music, but I cant play because my lips refuse to cooperate. I play my trombone from time to time. Edit: plus, playing the sousaphone is just plain awesome, and gets lots of attention. And I get to be in the top of the stands and not crammed in a row with 20 other sweaty trumpets. The other tubas never showed up, so I got solos on songs that started with tuba. It was awesome starting out the halftime marching show in the high school state football championship.
