Audrey's poor reaction here is really good writing. Earlier in the storyline it was set up that Audrey is normally really good at giving her granddaughter excellent advice and guidance--she successfully encouraged Elizabeth to ask Lucky to the dance. Her unhelpful, upsetting reaction here is contrasted with her previous behavior as well as with the much more loving and sensitive support Liz has already received several times from Bobbie, Lucky, and Sarah. Suggesting not to tell LIz's parents because "it would just upset them and they can't do anything anyway" is just awful. Clearly, there's a reason that Audrey can't handle this particular subject with her usual poise and good sense, and we later find out (or may already know, if we've been watching since the 60s) it's not just that she's "old-fashioned"--it's that Audrey herself was traumatized by rape when she was younger. One of the things I really like about this overall storyline is it shows how rape affects not just the individual victim but their family and community, even through decades and across generations. Liz's rape forces Audrey to deal with her own rape all over again and of course it brings up Luke's past rape of Laura as well. These events happened decades ago but they're not finished with us and they never will be.

This reminds me of the different time Audrey grew up in, where rape was something hidden and treated like the woman's fault. Its also why I think Liz has a tendency to blame herself for everything.

Gram is a little misguided. Elizabeth needs counseling. Call the cops. Hello?

If you know Audrey’s history it makes sense. She was raped by her ex husband. And back in those days you were expected not to talk about and just move on.

At first Audreys reaction pissed me off. But the writing was superb.

Better written scripts back then. I don't know what they are doing to the show today except to say it's a hot mess.

Stacy Smith me too...but Audrey was totally old school...plus my mom had watched since day one and from what I remember Audrey was raped too many years ago. Her thinking was ignore it and it will go away...so sad...

@@jjnyc4610 Somehow, while I can imagine "ignoring" it if it happened to me, I cannot imagine "ignoring " it if it happened to my granddaughter for whom I was acting as her guardian.

What I don't get about this story line is Laura's flashback in the park because luke raped her at the mall or something right
@MistyeyedNStarrified6 жыл бұрын
He raped her at Campus Disco. I think she ran to the park afterward.
@justlina27696 жыл бұрын
@@MistyeyedNStarrified She did. But Luke didn't know that until later. Interesting to see him envision it now when he never saw it first hand. But compelling to see the footage again.
