Love me some Mr. Mantan! Him and Jimmy Chan were the original Scooby-Doo and Shaggy. He was as big a part of my great love for Charlie Chan movies as Sidney Toler. I once asked a black friend of mine if actors like Mantan or Steppin Fetchit were offensive. He said, "those guys were some of the most successful black entertainers in Hollywood. They did it in a time that it wasn't easy for a black man to capture the heart of America. I love to see a black man succeed, so no it's not offensive."

You need to blame your parents on that one. How is it society’s responsibility to teach you about your own culture or the fault of anyone else for you not being shown this film? You learn about what you interested in and to be interested it takes some investigation and that’s again up to you. Instead of blaming anything or anyone for you own lack of self enlightenment why don’t you do the research?

--The sayings of Mantan Moreland 1. Never let a ghost catch you. 2. Avoid death, ghosts always be there. 3. Dead people and live people should not mix. 4. Ghost think they good lookin, never stay to find out. 5. I am mentioned in the credits but the ghost got the dough. 6. Cemeteries, funeral parlors, morgues, do not need you while alive. 7. Never let Mr. Chan send you in a dark room by yourself. 8. If the Dark get noisey, seek Light at once. 9. Few people know my whole name nor if the name that they call me is real. 10. Wait until the shooting stops then wait for witnesses, leave as soon as it is safe. 11. I am a chauffeur when you see me but that is only in the movies. 12. I am never really laughing except off camera. 13. I made a lot of money and made people happy, it was a job I accepted rather than preach or steal.

The onscreen credits incorrectly spell actor and newspaper columnist Harry Levette's name "Lavette." Actor Vernon McCalla's surname is misspelled "McCella." The Motion Picture Herald review notes that this film was the second of seven films planned for production by Jed Buell. Lucky Ghost was originally titled Lady Luck. Material contained in the MPAA/PCA (Motion Picture Association of America/Production Code Administration) Collection at the AMPAS (Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences) Library indicates that the film underwent a title change in late 1941 or early 1942. The reason for the change in title is not noted in the records.

It is said that in the 1950s, Moreland's characterizations were considered demeaning to the African-American community. But, much of his work in movies and vaudeville was aimed at African-American audiences. Although the main character is played by a white man made up to look like an Asian-American detective, Moreland’s performances in the Charlie Chan movies are undeniably funny. Mantan Moreland should be remembered as a great African American comedian with a long and fascinating career.

Is the dude in the grave yard doing vlack face? I'm confused. During this time, segregation was rampant, so there were black theatres and white theatres, right? So why was there black actors and actresses working alongside supporting blackface? Wouldn't the law keep black ppl from even acting together in the same movie? I was wondering the same thing in the movie 'I passed for White'. The main girl was white but she played close and even touched a black woman. Was it different for celebrities in the entertainment industry?
