Hi Geeks a musing! I am Nibha, the lady in the video, who explains stuff to Steve.i am a biologist, who has bern working for the cause of captive elephants, since 1996. I have been trained as a mahout ( elephant keeper) and have been forrunate to have worked closely with some of the best mahouts and wonderful eles. i have watched a couple of your videos and enjoyed them much . I am happy that you chose to react to this video. I also liked the fact that you not only expressed concern for the elephant as well as Vijayan, the mahout, but were also curious to know more about their lives here. you asked a couple of questions. Not sure if i can answer them all, but will try. The place where this was shot, is a camp, belonging to a temple in the state of Kerala. It isn't one of the best places to live at, from an elephant's perspective. Elephants are a Very controversial topic in our state. People like me do not agree to encouraging captivity of elephants. It is not humae and a lot of abuse is being meted out to them. This particular camp has constantly been criticized for its poor, standards elephant keeping. However, due to public pressure, and a corrupt governance,there are not enough policies to prevent abuse. I may get a lot of flak for writing this, by other sibscribers, but that is the truth. The situation is almost like the bull fight in Spain. Though it is abusive and cruel to the bulls, the event continues, due to popular demand. There is so much more to share about the story and lives of captive elephants, but this comment has gotten quite long already. Apologies for that. Thank you once again for choosing to react to the video and for creating an interest in their plight. I hope at least a few of the people who watch this video people will choose to research and reach out to help with the cause of captive elephants.

India has a history of keeping and petting elephants, since times immemorial. Elephants have been petted as they were used in wars by the Kings of various kingdoms. In fact the great Alexander had to fight with Porus, where he lost the battle and the major reason for his defeat were the Elephants which were being used by Porus'es army. In one of such incidents Alexander got badly wounded and hurt in the battle field.

Imagine the army of 60000 big elephants maintained by King chandra gupta Maurya in india with armours to its body and poisoned swords attached to it's tusks, crushing everything on its way, 6-10 people sitting over it, piercing the enemies with arrows and spears. Every king in india maintained army elephants. They were the moving castles.

one of my friends grand mother was killed by an Ox children were thrown stone on them the Ox became angry and woke up the children escaped by suddenly his grandmother came unaware of the situation the Ox picked her up and tossed her in the air she died immediately. later the Ox was made to escape.

All the elephants have a timing for the Mast and most Mahouts are about to tell in advance due to the small changes in the behavior of the elephant. But there are some environmental factors when there are some disruptions and it changes the timings. This is when most lethal attacks happen. In most cases, when the Mast is predicted correctly the elephant is isolated and tied up (like it is shown in this video). It is provided food and water regularly as it cannot be allowed to roam around on its own.

There are 2 situations where an elephant is taken into human society. First, when it is orphaned and there is no one to take care of it. Second, when it becomes a pain in the a$$ for the people due to its aggression. But most of the time, both situations are due to the reduction of forest cover in the region.

Elephants can be owned by private individuals ....many decades ago my uncle owned three elephants (two female and one tusker) and they were mainly used for hauling felled logs from the forests .... when required they were hired out to churches and temples for processions ... or sometimes people would hire them for private ceremonies ........ one died at about age 70 or so, then when my uncle became old and his children migrated outside Kerala he sold the others ...

Jordan is right. But its not 8. They can remember for around 12 years and just a little soft kick from them can land you so far that you would be injured badly or dead. Rhinos are worst. So remember not to mess with them or get too close. They are supremely powerful.
