For the first scribble you can always cover the other side where the pictures are with another paper and watch them as the color or have them do it on a separate piece of paper, and then tape it in the book. Instead of messing up the page by ripping it out.

For first scribble, I would just glue in a picture they drew on a separate piece of paper.
