Have you heard the theory on who Katniss’s grandmother is. So basically, Katniss’s grandmother is Maude Ivory, Lucy Gray’s cousin who wrote the Meadow Song that she sung to Rue and the Hanging Tree. Both of these songs heavily impacted her childhood and were most likely sung to her often by her dad. The Hanging Tree is the important one because it was only sung once before it was outlawed. Most people in 12 are scared of the Capitol’s punishments and singing a song isn’t worth being executed. Maude Ivory is said to be able to memorize a song after only hearing it once. And since she’s in the Covey who are known to be very rebellious people, she wouldn’t worry about the law. In the book there’s a lake that only Katniss’s dad knows of, the cabin near the lake was a hangout spot for the band that she and Lucy Gray were in. In the book Katniss’s mom heard Prim, Katniss, and their dad singing it and she immediately knew it was outlawed. There’s a lot more reasons, like appearance, but that would take to long.

I just finished the book last night (like 11 PM, once you get to the last few chapters you can't just put a book down and go to sleep!). While trying to fall asleep I was calculating generation times because I figured Maude was either Katniss' grandmother or great-grandmother, depending on how young people had babies. It makes sense, and how fittingly ironic that one of Lucy's descendants would end up being the one to take down Snow and everything he built. And Bailey definitely reminded me of Prim in this video. I love her attitude and joy smiling and bouncing away in the background!

It makes sense for me though, because district 12 are the ones (mostly) who put together the wedding for Finnick and Annie and that was hella festive. District 13 didn't do stuff like that, although they were happy to help when it was approved. And Katniss says at the wedding "...the fiddler strikes up a tune that turns every head from 12. We may have been the smallest, poorest district in Panem, but we know how to dance."

I'm not sure honestly- the music distribution company does the work of obtaining licenses for covers and distributing the fees. Which is super helpful! But I'm not really in the loop 😄 I did send an email to her publisher to ask for official permission and got a response from scholastic as they forwarded it to her but not sure if she got it. I'm sure she's a very busy and popular person :) so we will see!
