Lucy don't feel odd about visiting the cemeteries. As an Australian I served in the UK forces. We often had to go to Lydd and Hythe. Nearby whilst running I came across a group of WW1 Australian graves. On subsequent visits I got some flowers and a couple of beers then sat down next to the graves for a half hour. I would talk to them and tell them about home, particularly in the summer if the Ashes was on in England. I think my mates in the Bn thought I was a bit odd, yet I felt the need to let them know, although 12,000 miles from home, they were remembered.

I've visited the CWG cemetery in Beersheba, where the British dead from the 1918 battle are buried. British, Australians, and New Zealanders are side by side there, cavalry, yeomanry, light horse, mounted rifles, and gunners together. It wasn't nearly as big as Tyne Cot but it was lovely and very well kept.

This is a brilliant project! As a CWGC volunteer (as I know some of the WW2TV gang are) Tyne Cot has a special place in my heart. What a fantastic live show.

It's great to see General Riddell's grave. I wrote a book about 50th Division in WWII, and Second Ypres was the division's first battle ever. Riddell led 149th (Northumberland) Brigade in the 50th.

Lucy and Paul thank you , I regard myself as an enthusiastic amateur World war I ,II aficionado from NZ and already on day one of WWI TV , I have learnt so many new facts , alongside WWII TV this will be another I will love to hear more on WWI. I too Lucy like hearing the individual human side of war and with your passion , will be the one to tell their story from all sides-well done

I went there a few years ago and on the NZ memorial to the missing I noticed an Evers-Swindell which is a name known to most NZers

Excellent choice of starting point. It's all too easy, with over 100 years of separation, and the subsequent "big-picture" discussions of diplomacy, politics and strategies, to forget that for millions of people the war was an intensely personal journey and experience, and nothing brings that home more than the personal messages left by families on the memorials to their loved ones. Thank you.

While researching family history to learn more of my Grandfather’s service in the AEF, I recently discovered that I have a Great Uncle memorialized at Tyne Cot. It was moving to me seeing this. Thanks for showing the Cemetery and Memorial.

I visited the Douaumont Ossuary in the fall of 19 and it was sobering see the fast field of headstones and the names engraved in the walls, but I looked into the basement windows and seeing the bones stacked high really brought home the death toll of Verdun. I'll look forward to the coming episodes.

Brigadier Riddell seems to be your answer to my myth busting request from the week of the channel's launching about callous commanders enjoying luxury while the troops died. Thank you! I'm impressed at being acknowledged as having a relevant question.

Lovely cemetery. It is rather moving to consider just how many soldiers a buried just at this one place. It's difficult to wrap one's mind around it. Thanks Lucy and Olivia for the brief tour.

With regards to respect for sites, I recall a 50th Div unit in 1940 digging in under the shadow of the Canadian memorial on Vimy Ridge.

Paul & Lucy, Thank you very much for the promising start to the new channel and the visit to Tyne Cot cemetery. I think this was the cemetery I previously visited near Ypres-as pointed out there are so many of them in this area. Lots of good background information given and I can understand Lucy's sentiments about it being a moving experience. Looking forward to your other shows and hopefully an eventual visit to the Menin Gate.

The Menin Gate Memorial was found to be too small to contain all the names of the missing, so an arbitary cut off date of the 15th August 1917 was chosen, that included the names of 54,395 men, the post cut off date deaths were remembered at Tyne Cot Cemetary and number 34,984 a total of nearly 90,000 missing with no known grave in addition to all the named graves

My Grandfather's CO Major Moorhouse and his son Cpt R Moorhouse are both commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. They were both killed on the same day in Oct 1917 at Broodseinde Ridge and their bodies were never recovered. My Grandfather was seriously wounded on the Somme in 1916 and was invalided out in 1917. If he hadn't been wounded he would probably have been kil led in Oct 1917, the 1/4 KOYLI casualties were enormous in that bat tle. They had already done a year down in Ypres near the canal and then were moved to Thiepval Wood for the Battle of the Somme. Xx

Re Otto Bieber the german buried at Tyne Cot, there is a Bruno Bieber buried at Steenwerck KIA 13 April 1918 As Bieber isn't a common surname i've often wondered if they might have been brothers.
@maryfinnfan4140
@maryfinnfan4140 Жыл бұрын
Bruno Bieber was killed in the same action as my Great Uncle Bill. The Germans were trying to take Hazebrouck and 12th KOYLI , 4th Grenadier Guards and many others were in a fight to the death to prevent them. See Haig's "backs to the wall" directive. Sadly, dear Uncle Bill (who had been a pit pony boy when he joined up in 1914) has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Ploegstreet Memorial.

My Uncles, one lies in Duhallow in Ypres and an other in Calais War Cemetary. Sadly they were interned in body bags. That said not every one did but sadly most did. My other Uncle my Mams brother has no grave apart from the bottom of the channel as his little minesweeper HMS Ganilly was torpedoed just after DDay escorting American convoy in with supply’s. Sadly all 39 of the crew lost. His name is on the RNVR cenotaph at Yarmouth. So to Gunner Thomas Charles Smith, Lancer George Charlton and RNVR Stoker, WW2 Charles Cuthbert Brennan, who’s grave is the bottom of the Channel lost with all his crew mates after being torpedoed just off DDay beaches escorting in an American Supply Convoy, on Trawler HMS Ganilly, Minesweeper. So to you God Bless and thank you and your mates both male and female. RIP.

Would Tyne Cot be like Arlington Cemetery in the US ?
@WW1TVchannel
@WW1TVchannel Жыл бұрын
Not really, because Arlington includes many graves of servicemen who died of old-age after long lives. Tyne Cot, like all CWGC is for those who fell during the war. PW
