One thing I noticed was the point at which Gaston sings about Belle’s physical beauty being comparable to his own, he falls in love with his own reflection so deeply that he fails to notice her go by. Thats’s such a brilliant characterisation. One might think that Gaston loves himself more than he loves Belle, but I don’t think that’s exactly the case. Gaston doesn’t actually love Belle at all. He doesn’t even know who she is. Who she is is irrelevant to him. Gaston only loves himself and that’s shocking! What’s more shocking is that people like Gaston exist everywhere in our world. Many people are so obsessed with their physical beauty and ego that they completely forget about what really matters. Gaston doesn’t know true love. No wonder that after all the bravado he feels so miserable, empty and unfulfilled.
