I just thought it came across as so hypocritical of Lorelai. But then we're all hypocrites at times so it was so relatable and I love them both as characters!

I watched the original series when I was pretty young and then watched the revival right when it came out on Netflix (I was 26 at the time). My initial reaction to Rory as an adult was of extreme shock and disappointment (with the showrunners, not with her as a character, because at first I thought they did her dirty). But after looking back on the initial show, I realized that Rory's evolution was actually very natural and fitting from a writing perspective. She grew up completely idolized by everyone around her. Everyone. Even the people who could not make peace amongst themselves (like Lorelai and her parents) could come together in their adoration for Rory. But all this blind love, all this awe, stemmed either from a limited perspective (small town people leading small town lives) or from a very subjective, biased place (friends and family). Realistically speaking, she was never all that special. She had no unique, groundbreaking or original ideas. She was a well mannered, studious, dedicated (not necessarily passionate), conventionally pretty girl who was brought up to believe that she deserved and was destined to do great things. And as much as Lorelai wanted to raise her grounded and humble, separated from their posh and privileged relations, I think the constant praise got to her in the end. And it got to us, as young teens watching the show. Without realizing it, I found myself admiring young Rory just like the people around her did. And on the basis of what, exactly? I was about her age back then and looking at her now, there's nothing I find inspiring about her personality. To me Lane and Paris are far more interesting characters, both very neurotic and flawed and in deep need of therapy, but with a drive and passion I never quite saw in Rory. Because they had to overcome emotional hardships Rory never dealt with, not truly. The gut wrenching awkwardness of teen life and not feeling good enough or accepted or desired. Rory had always been accepted and desired. And in the rare moments she wasn't, she could run back to the people who kissed her ass telling her how amazing and great she was. In all of her academic years it kinda felt like she was aiming for proficiency because that's what people expected of her, not because it was truly what she wanted. And maybe that's why she found herself so easily swayed or discouraged at the first sign of external resistance/rejection. I think Rory always had the potential to achieve impressive things career-wise, but she was too coddled for her own good and it molded her into a lost, directionless, entitled and very selfish young adult. She was never the unproblematic perfect little angel we were constantly told she was, and it all came to light in the revival. That's not a bad thing from a writing perspective. Just very interesting to think about. I've seen the show a couple of times now at different stages in my life and my perspective, especially on Rory, has greatly shifted. If anything, it's a testament to the creator's talent. I agree that Emily is the best character in the show. And I absolutely loved her ending in the revival. I also wish Adam Brody never left to film The OC. Dave and Lane were perfect for each other.

@ania50383 жыл бұрын
My opinion of him actually did the complete opposite lol I thought he was definitely too controlling at times but really it was just his immaturity/insecurity because at the end of the day he didn't actually want to control her, and was there for her at her lowest points. Also, I think it's valid to remember that both of the boys that were chasing Rory, whose behaviour solely caused Dean's jealousy, were not only actively trying to break up their relationship but also treating Rory like absolute garbage most of the time so I see it more as warranted protectiveness and personally would much prefer that to any of the other bullshit from the other guys. Obviously I don't condone cheating, but he got married so young and early that it doesn't cut as deep as it used to for me because it was as much Dean's fault for marrying when he wasn't over Rory, than it was Rory's for participating. I think had Jess never entered the picture and ruined everything (HOW are people Team Jess just HOW) by being a horrible human being they would have stayed together. Sure, he wasn't as well-read as Jess or well-educated as Logan but he wasn't really dumbed down (Rory's first conversation with him about Rosemary's Baby the movie vs. the book showed that he was more average than her), he was more on Luke's level and he ended up going to university too even if it wasn't one of the Big Three. I feel like he never acknowledges what he does wrong. like when he cheated on his FIANCE!!! Also when Dean and Rory were going to get back together and then he saw her with all those rich guys and Logan he just decides no thanks we aren't compatible anymore. Maybe i'm bias cause i really like jess but i also feel like if Jess weren't a factor i still wouldn't like Dean.

He didn't break up with her because she was talking to Tristan, also if anyone response to me like she did after i say i love you then i would be upset too tbh. She handled that situation wrong, even if she wasn't ready to say it back(typical Rory). The cheating on his wife was horrible but let's be real ....he shoul have never gotten married. He wasn't over her but he HAD to end it cause she played him. She was sneaking around with Jess, kissed Jess all while with Dean. Oh and what she do while with Jess...compare him to Dean and kinda always run to him for comfort cause Jess was a jerk. I could only tolerate older mature Jess but him in season 2&3 is a no from me 😒 he was unreliable, irresponsible and a jerk to everyone except her (which doesn't make him a good person imo) Ppl really forget that Rory gave Dean a reason to be jealous everytime that he was jealous. She didn't see it but he did and it was always accurate with Tristan, Jess and Logan. (She claimed she liked nun of them when reality is she did like them) I'm so happy in the Netflix special that Dean was happy and didn't pay her the attention that she craves. really interesting what you said about older rory being just an avarage thirty and something woman, not the failure that everyone says. i don't think there were 2 rorys, i think rory always was terrible at living the parts of her life that weren't planned. she's always wanted men she couldn't have: jess when she was dating dean, dean when he was married and logan when he was engaged. i think rory loved logan also because of the world he could provide to her, she was always enchanted by his house, his gifts, his traveling plans. i also think mitchum wasn't wrong about her not "having it" for jornalism. he was a total jerk, but wasn't all wrong. i think lorelai is a lot like emily, she also wanted to live her dream through rory, convincing her to want to go to harvard since she was three (not normal, not healthy). also, she wanted rory to be perfect just like emily wanted her to be perfect. you can tell that by the reactions she has when rory does something wrong or that she wasn't expecting.

I always reference that scene in the hotel on the way to Mia’s wedding, where lorelai and Emily are putting on their face cream and Rory points out “behold my future”, along with the scene where lorelai questions if she likes pop tarts genuinely or to spite her mother, as main evidence towards Emily and lorelai being the same thought process/personality approached via two extremes; the housewife raised in upper middle class Americana, where things are done “properly” and there’s a “proper” way to do things, VS the teen pregnancy runaway rebellious proto-teen mum, where she’s a “fun mum”, free spirit, hanging out with her kid as a friend etc. They have the same energy; lorelai planning out the inn renovations and working her way up in the hotel to become manager, directing people with confidence and self-assurance, Emily directing domestic staff, planning work dos for her husband, building her standing in the DAR. lorelai is, against her fervent wishes, so much like her mother, on the surface she works to be everything she missed out on as a kid (maintain proper spacing and distance, other kids got hugs, etc) but she can’t escape her roots lol

@@KrislonR thanks! i cant believe i forgot to mention the way that emily wanted more out of her life than being 'just another DAR lady' and so married Richard, a man who supported her and adored her and respected her, instead of the (admittedly small sample we see) relationships typical to her social class/group (christopher's parents and the way strom + francie were handling the news of the teen pregnancy vs emily and richard) and lorelai wanting not just more than her mothers life but a completely different life, and going after it without regrets or hesitantion. both of them are people who know what they want, dont put up with fools, stand firm about their positions, are intensely loyal, and believe wholeheartedly in their 'view' of the world (eg emily believing that proper women marry properly and behave properly etc and lorelai believing people should forge their own path and make the life choices that suit them, not make them for others/out of expectation) !! i love their dynamic interactions, bc its so often not "immoveable object vs unstoppable force" but "two unstoppable forces intersecting and causing a massive pileup"

Dean was never manipulative to Rory and always showed up for her even to events he wouldn't otherwise go to. Rory was not a good gf to Dean, specifically when jess came into the picture. They made Dean into this needy, possessive guy but that was only because he was trying to hold on to a relationship that was already fading. @miekemuis4804 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly! And I think that completely went to her head when she started at Yale and had this matchmaking party at her grandparents'. She was completely blinded AND blindsided by this glamorous way of living and the behaviour of the people in these circles (like the guys from the Life and Death Brigade), that she seemed to have forgotten completely who she actually was, the no-bullshit caring girl that loves to learn new things and just read and listen to alternative music that we see in the first seasons. That + her complete inability to comprehend and handle her own emotions and feelings (which, imo, also lead her to the affair with Dean) has steered her off of her path, the person she was and wanted to be. Many people say that Rory just became 'awful' and 'selfish' and so on, which is partially true I guess, but all I see is a girl that got completely lost and wasn't in touch with herself anymore. (Which is highly realistic and very relatable, since many people lose themselves in a way during adolescence and often forget who they really are under the influence of all that is going on when growing up) Maybe this was because the big world she got in going into Yale overwhelmed her and her small-town upbringing could in no way have prepared her for that and for what adulthood actually is (a true rollercoaster, really), because Stars Hollow is a sweet and magical environment and in no way comparable to the harsh reality of the big, competitive, academic world she enters. I think all these facets (together with her adoration for her grandparents) are the perfect recipe for falling for Logan, who's rich, cheeky (a bit like Jess), confident and offers her a perfect form of escapism through the Life and Death Brigade + he wants to take care of her and I feel like that is very appealing to her, the fact that she could fall back on him. That's kind of my feeling regarding Rory's character development, please let me know if you agree!

I’m glad you mentioned that you loved teenage Rory. When people complain about adult Rory I feel like they just ignore the fact that as a teenager she was a much better character. I think a big factor in it is just that she was praised so much her entire life when really she’s pretty ordinary. Sure, she was smart and studied hard, but everyone in Stars Hollow always made it seem like Rory was a genius (you see her kind of struggle with this when she first gets to Chilton but she does catch up pretty quickly) She was also conventionally pretty so everyone talked about that too. Every time she needed money for something she knew her grandparents would help her (even if that money came with conditions like Friday night dinners, she didn’t have to actually work for it unlike Lorelai who didn’t become entitled bc she worked hard to get away from all of that when she was a teenager so that she could raise Rory the way she wanted) and I think the year Rory wasn’t going to Yale and wasn’t talking to Lorelai really affected how she turned out..the influence of Logan and living with her grandparents made her become more entitled and less ambitious, and even when she went back to school and started talking to Lorelai again it wasn’t the same

@@abhaya_ananth i see your point, I think what people don’t like about Rory is that despite her apologizing so many times for certain things, she makes the same mistakes over and over again, she never shows much character progression. I’d say she also apologizes when she needs to “clear her conscience” rather than a heartfelt apology. It may also be the fact that she maintains in her apologies the “virgin” “puppy eyed” face quite a lot, this make the audience think she wants pity over anything genuine. Shortly after her apologies, she also seems to go on with her life quite casually, she never truly ponders on something more than a few days, she just goes on with her life, once again losing credibility in her apologies, as true guilty can leave you ashamed for months at a time. This explains why Marty once told her he was tired of “innocent doe-eyed act” when she acted clueless towards Logan’s advances on her. Amy palladino as a script writer was aware of that, hence Rory’s bleak ending. I’ve found a lot people in my own life that have manipulated me in that way, they play the virgin role to received empathy for something they have done wrong to deresponsibilize themselves of what they’ve done.

@@palomamartorell4184 I'm sorry you've met people like that. My point is that Rory is a good person, and I don't think she has a mean streak in her (however other characters like Paris for example are just horrible people - but fans just trivialize, or don't even ACKNOWLEDGE her flaws.) People cherry pick reasons to hate Rory, which is totally uncalled for. But if it were other characters like Paris - she's just a "savage" or "it's just a character".

My unpopular opinion: the Gilmore Girls were actually shitty people who used ppl, were careless about others, and weren't REALLY that special. Yes Rory was smart and Lorelei was gorgeous, but they really used ppl. Luke was always working on their house or doing favors for the girls, Lorelei's parents never did anything other than love them, and Suki was given a baby shower WITH EASTER BALLOONS!! This woman is your best friend who celebrated your child getting into the highschool she wanted and you can't be bothered to throw her an actual baby shower?!

I dunno, I feel like they both just really lacked basic skills like cooking lol and and fixing things around the house. Adult Rory I can’t defend but I think Lorelai did give a lot as well as take, that’s how smaller communities work. Some examples are: her being very involved in stars hollow events, offering up the inn for family/friends, dropping things to rush to friends/family in need, making costumes, sorting out all those donated clothes, helping paint luke’s diner, helping with the sleepover, presents, shopping, the gifts for all the town from their Europe trip, taking in Kirk & Lane on multiple occasions, giving advice. I agree that the way she gave was not always as obvious as Luke for example, but she often noticed little things that people needed and offered help they didn’t know they needed. Her presence and stuff also made a lot of people smile, which imo is just as valuable as the more practical help she received! She was very selfish at times so not saying she’s perfect but nobody is really 🤷🏽♀️

ok so before I start I should say that I just finished my 17th rewatch and I have a Gilmore Girls tattoo... 1. I always thought that the reason Rory "went bad" was her being around all that privilege at Chilton and Yale. When she was influenced solely by the town and Lorelai she was a joy but I think being around spoiled people spoiled her as a person and you can see this happen slowly over the seasons if you watch the show a few times. 2. The whole Logan is Rory's Christopher and Jess is her Luke thing is called full circle theory by the GG fandom. Speaking of the GG fandom, the best place to find GG discourse and content is Tumblr! I literally kept my high school blog just to keep up with the GG content on Tumblr lol. 3. ASP and the core original GG team did not work on season 7 and I think the idea that they sabotaged the 7th season isn't that insane.... 4. A hill I'll die on: Emily Gilmore is the most interesting character and has the best character development of anyone on the show! 5. Lastly, a fun fact: Laine is based off ASP's best friend and GG co-producer Helen Pai who is married to a Dave Rygalski in real life (tv dave is based off Pai's husband) and Hep Alien the band name is an anagram for Helen Pai!

I agree. I actually think there was a *tiny* bit more diversity (and uniqueness and joy) within Stars Hollow, and when Rory joined the white privilege community that was her grandparents world, she lost what little she had learned of the outside world.

I understand introducing drama into the relationship with Luke & Lorelai, but April was a good character that was introduced at a horrible time. I really loved the ep where Lorelai helped with April's birthday party and showed off her awesome girl-mom skills. April's mom was just batshit crazy -- she honestly should have been relieved that Lorelai helped (and probably spent her own money on the party). Luke was there the whole time so it wasn't like Lorelai just banished him to go camping while she dealt with the girls. April's mom's jealousy comes from out of NOWHERE. She can't be jealous of Luke's fiance because she didn't even want Luke in her life? I know it was for the drama, but the whole story line could have fit in better if they could have story-boarded just a bit better. I actually like April -- it's not her fault that she came between Luke and Lorelai at all -- she really seemed to like Lorelai too!

I always dreamt of having a mother-daughter bond like Lorelai and Rory's, but couldn't due to my mom sever mental illness and now that my dad recently prematurely passed from covid I realise that I had that all along with him. What father would get so invested in a "girly show", what father would explain "periods" as best as he could, what father would take his daughter shopping for the perfect 18th birthday dress. Mine. I’m team Jess 💯!! I think after he left in series 3 and then popped up every now and then in the later seasons, he acted as her moral compass. When he came to visit her after he wrote his book and called her out over leaving Yale, he was the only one who could make her come to her senses, and again in the revival, he was the one who made her realise what she should be doing with her life. I’m just gonna throw my two cents in, and defend Rory. I’ve seen a bunch of comments calling Rory entitled. There is a difference between being entitled and not being able to recognize your privilege. Rory is an insanely hard worker throughout the series, whether it be for tests, a job, or the DAR, and for the most part, makes it clear that she wants to work for the things she wants, as opposed to letting her family buy her way in. Her problem is that she doesn’t recognize her privilege Being from a wealthy family.

I'm certain others have gotten to many of these points before me, but chiming in to add: 1) The magic of Gilmore Girls is that the show shifts based on where you are in life. I graduated high school one year before Rory, and recall how, back in the day, her experiences and perspectives seemed totally in line with people I knew. Now I'm Lorelai's age, and I watch her storylines with a different eye and understanding. 2) Rory was, for all intents and purposes, coddled - despite growing up in a single parent household. My read on this is that it's a foil to Lorelai's experience doing it on her own, despite the ample resources of her family. I'm totally with you in disliking adult Rory, but I also appreciate that they gave the character that feels authentic, based on what we saw of the choices and paths she chose - for better or worse, Lorelia's dynamism allowed Rory to be somewhat quiet and bookish and not super independent. 3) Everything you said about Lane. Yes. 4) There's a moment in Lauren Graham's book about the song "Slap That Bass" which is simply the most hilarious, delightful thing in the world (and even moreso on audiobook, if you have access to it). 5) I also do the escapist repeat viewing of certain shows, and Gilmore Girls has been on that rotation for YEARS. Glad you finally got around to watching!

I just want to say something about Christopher and I'll be quiet. To me the reason why Christopher was absent in Rory's life was because Loerlai pushed him away, which made it easier for Loerlai to blame Christopher for everything. He was the one to get married, but she said no. She wanted to be independent. She told him to go and travel. Plus in the first season Lorelai jealous when Christopher hung out with Rory despite his screw up. Even in the revival Christopher told Rory he felt like in the beginning he wasn't wanted in Loerlai's and Rory's life. I'm not excusing Christopher's behavior, but I'm just saying that Loerlai is partly to blame for the disconnect in Rory's life.
@KrislonR4 жыл бұрын
I agree that Lorelai pushed Chris out of their lives, but I don't blame her at all! If she had accepted his marriage proposal at 16, he would have worked for her father's company and lived with their parents for, what, 3 to 5 years to save up for a home? Can you imagine them under Emily's thumb the whole time? The stress and tension that would have caused their already rocky relationship (being so young, being young parents, not living up to expectations), I have no doubt Chris would've bailed. And where would that leave Lorelai? She would've been in the same place (with nothing) but 3-5 years later with a toddler and still under her mother's control. By telling Chris to go do what he needed to do, she was able to care for herself and Rory. I think she did resent him for getting to do those things, understandably, and I think she always thought he would come back to them in a reasonable timeline, which he didn't, because he would never agree to settle down (and rarely visited. That's gotta hurt, both Lor and Rory).
@bonessvufreak4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, to a certain extent. Lorelai didn't want anyone else monopolizing her time/relationship with Rory and pushed Christopher out of their lives a bit. We saw that in the beginningof season 1 when she got jealous that Rory was enjoying her time with Richard as well as when Chris came to town. There are various points where I think Lorelai felt threatened by anyone else (especially whenever Chris came into their lives) who tried to really work their way into Rory's life. I also thing that Chris was a very all or nothing kind of guy. It seemed like his main goal was to be in a relationship with Lorelai, not to be a father to Rory. And whenever Lorelai told him she wasn't interested, he stepped back from being a father to Rory because he couldn't be with Lorelai.
@stephjovi3 жыл бұрын
Telling him to travel like at least one if is should get to enjoy, doesn't mean go travel for the next 16 years. They were 16 he had to go to school anyways so he was close. He knew where to find her when he finally showed up so they were in touch at no point does she say Hey why are you here you're not allowed to see Rory. They were 16,much to young to get married because of a baby. We see what kind of father he is when he's alone with Gigi and complains that he can't reach the Nanny. That guy has to take care of his own child for one evening and has to run to Lorelei. And as soon as he could he dropped her off in Paris and next thing we hear is she's still there. That's all he could say about her

However his love for her was always the strongest, they had the best chemistry and connection, as well as he got his crap together in hopes of getting her back in the process, and he never stopped loving her. Just as Luke was pining after Lorelai all that time, Jess was the same way with Rory, and Logan is definitely her Christopher. I also like Lane as a character. When I watched the show I didn't think I would like it that much, but then I ended up getting hooked!

Rory just had a lot of... casual cruelty in the revival, which was so offputting

They ruined her character SO much in the revival. Hard-working, genuine Rory became so entitled and cruel!

@@atllauren she definitely had flaws in the original series, but they never made her as unbearable as in the revival. She lost a lot of things that made her character work

I feel like they ruined her character starting with the affair she had with Dean... and then it just went downhill from there. (And she was awful in the reunion.) That's one thing I really don't like, what they did with her character, because I genuinely liked her in the first seasons. She was a good kid, cared about school, cared about her friends and her mom, loved to read, was passionate about what she wanted to do with her life... and then they just turned her into this callous, stuck-up person and I couldn't understand why they would do that to her.

Or is it the Wookiee’s baby...? I agree that Jess is her Luke though. I really hated the “Paul” story line in the revival too. What was the point of that??

Maybe the Wookiee is actually Marty.....

I really wish the show was more diverse, there’s Lane, Michel , Gypsy and every once in a while a miscellaneous POC

I have similar thoughts to you! I think what annoyed me about the revival was that we don't watch GG for reality, it's supposed to be magical escapism and to not let at least half of the characters achieve their goals feels like a cold cup of coffee. Also Justice for Lane '21
