Here is some advice from an experienced professional ("Huge Intruder"), he provided after watching the video I thought you guys could get some help from: 1. Flux is used as a anti-oxidation agent when forming solder joints. It makes no sense to use flux when de-soldering a joint. In fact, most solder is flux rosin core, which already contains the necessary flux, and additional flux is not needed even when forming a solder joint. 2. It’s not necessary to tin the leads of the components in advance. This can actually make it difficult to insert the leads into the board if you apply too much solder in advance. No such tinning is used in the automated wave flow soldering manufacturing of boards. 3. You wore gloves in an effort to protect the board, but you actually probably risked doing more damage to the components on the board by not practicing proper electro-static discharge (ESD) procedures. 4. The “stuff” you mentioned that leaked on the board is called electrolyte and eats away at the board and the electrical traces on the board.

thank you very much !! very informative, good suggestion to find an old radio and practice first; this video has given me the confidence to do the ECU myself (and not pay Cardone $500 to do the same work)
@DriversTherapy2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Definitely practice first and make sure not to leave the soldering iron on for too long. Make sure you also know how to use flux. Flux was a life saver for me when doing this job. When I used flux correctly, the capacitors came off super easy. The main thing to do is to not overheat the board or "pads" where the capacitors attach to. Let me know if you have any questions.

@DriversTherapy2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I am only going to recommend that you use capacitors with the manufacture's original specifications. I don't know why someone would deviate since the failure is not due to design, tolerances, or resistance, but simply due to age.

Heyyy, late comment I know but just a tip. A lot of the time they use lead free solder on these pcbs which is definitely more difficult to desolder. Trick is to actually add some tin/lead solder to the joint and then it will mix with the lead free and be MUCH easier to work with.

@@DriversTherapy Yeah it was a good video. I have to tackle caps on my 98 avalon and I'm always looking for different techniques. Another thing I find helpful is using 63/37 tin/lead solder. It's eutectic which means it melts at the same temp it solidifies, so there is no "in between" state to wait for and you get less cold joints if you aren't holding the component waiting for it to solidify. I know I don't have the steadiest hand anymore haha. Thanks for the vid man.
