In my opinion, The Mandalorian soundtrack was the most important in Star Wars history since the first movie. John Williams is leaving the franchise, and anyone who tries to be like him is only going to fail. The Mandalorian was the first SW OST to take on its own style and run with it. It took me some adjusting but now I’m absolutely in love with this OST. I believe he’s paved the way for more unique and interesting OSTs in Star Wars films, so that composers don’t have to be tied down just trying to replicate John Williams masterpieces.

As a musician myself listening to the Mandalorian soundtrack this popped into my mind: The last composer who was able to unfold simplicity to such beautiful complexity was Ludwig van Beethoven. All these ornaments, all these hints, enriching and never destroying, supporting a western-style space opera, are simply wonderful. It supports the story and it's standing for itself. Funny thing is that John Williams with his incredibly creative melodies is truly the Mozart of film music. Ludwig "van" Göransson is a worthy successor.

It's actually hard to say. Kevin Kiner, John Powell, Michael Giacchino have amazing Star Wars Scores too. But the one thing that separates them from Ludwig is that he never used the force theme or a familiar them from star wars. The entire series music was his own, he never mixed in a Familiar Star Wars theme. That's why when hearing his theme for the First time it was so different, and it took some time to get used to because it almost didn't even feel like a star wars theme.

Writing music for Star Wars has to be one of the most challenging gigs a musicican/composer can get. John Williams has written history, can I can't imagine how stressful it must be to have to walk in his tracks. Yet, Ludwig Göransson managed not only to create an amazing OST for this universe, he gave it a distinct flavor, a personal touch that completely works. It fits, while being completely different. Others have tried to emulate what John Williams was doing with some level of success (Michael Giacchino did a decent job with Rogue one, as John Powell for Solo or even Jeremy Soule with KOTOR), but they didn'T sound "personal" in my opinion. So good job on The Mandalorian, I enjoyed every minute of it! :)
