"Beethoven died on 26 March 1827 at the age of 56." Rest in peace, god of classical music.

I never knew Beethoven made a trombone quartet at all. And it has historical significance, being one of the piecse played at his funeral.

It had never occurred to me that trombones even existed in 1812.

The Three Equals for four trombones, Wo0 30 (German: Drew Equale für vier Posaunen), are 3 short beautiful equals (or equali) for trombones (or Sacbuts as they were in his time) by Ludwig van Beethoven They were intended for use on All Souls’ Day (2 Nov) at the local cathedral in Vienna Beethoven had in his mind the intention of writing these equali as music for his on funeral and the very somber nature of the style of these wonderful pieces was probably bought on or ‘inspired’ in a morbid way by Beethoven’s miserable health during that time - suffering from repetitive headaches, stomach aches and related bowel conditions causing him grief and despair. There are some who joke that at Beethoven’s funeral ( 29 March 1827) Trombones were used because all of the other musicians in Vienna that day had a gig 😆 but I personally think it was because LvB knew exactly what he wanted and that is why trombones were the only choice because of their superb versatility in expressing emotion The music is definitely reflective and evokes a moody, somber feeling full of emotion, tension & release masterfully created by LvB to “arouse emotions like no other “

Not only because their versatility, but also because the trb.sound is the closest possible to the human voice.
Cool to find these. I only knew Bruckner's set for this instrumentation before - perhaps he was inspired by Beethoven's essay?

What Bruckner piece is originally for trombone quartet?
@vaclavmiller80324 жыл бұрын
@@GNGianopoulos Ah this is a mistake on my part - Bruckner's Equali are for trombone trio (WAB 114 & 149 respectively). Still, they're about the only two Equali sets by repertoire composers, and inspiration does not seem implausible to me.

@@vaclavmiller8032 Since the Renaissance, historically trombone/sackbut/posaune players worked in the churches chapels doubling and amplifying the alto, tenor and bass voices from the singers. Thats the reason why they appear rarelly in the classic and early romantic orchestras, and when they do it they usually come along with the choir. Given this relation with the sacred repertoire these pieces were written to play at funerals (In fact Beethoven ones were played at his own funeral). Bruckner ones were inspired by Wenzel Lambel´s ten Equali also for three or four trombones in Linz, and these may be ispired by Beethovens ones. Stravinsky also followed the tradition later with his "In memoriam Dylan Thomas" which features the same instrumentation. But as I said, this was not a rare practice for the trombone players, as they day to day routine was playing chorals in the church.

Wonderful orchestration, no wonder he knew how to use trombones in his symphonies. My favorite excerpt is his fourth symphony, first movement in the coda.

Huh? There are no trombones in the fourth symphony and no trombones in the first movement of any Beethoven symphony.
@michaeledwards11722 жыл бұрын
I thought the 4th symphony didn't use trombones. I don't have scores handy to check now, but I thought the only Beethoven symphonies that include trombones are nos. 5, 6, and 9.
