I've only followed 40k lore for about 2yrs now and I don't think Valdor will betray the emperor. I always think of the very beginning of Valdor: Birth of the Imperium. The conversation the emperor has with Valdor when he first wakes up has always been on my mind. The convo is vague. He tells Valdor to ask any question because in the days to come information and data is all he'll be able to give him. "There's no such think as a free lunch" "you pay a price for all things and this is mine" "I will become less than human... and more" "with one bargain you become stronger, you make another you become weaker." "It applies to mortals, it applies to gods, not that I intend to become one." And then the emperor ask if Valdor understands the reason for the grand bargain and if he finds it unworthy while asking him to speak freely. Valdor says "infinite power can't be overcome because we're finite, limited by law... so deception" "you will cheat them, you will cheat all of them and us" "a risky strategy, but there are no others" and he doesn't find the emperors plan unworthy. I honestly think it's the most important piece of lore with regards to the future 40k could be heading, although GW could always change things. I guess what I'm getting at is that Valdor knew all of the plans of the emperor, just as Malcador knew. The deception could lead to the emperor gaining power on the scale of the chaos gods, but he's not going to try and become one. But just cause he's not going to try doesn't mean its not a likely possibility. Valdor was in on the true deception and it's overall scale so I don't think betrayal is possible. One of my fav books. I'd honestly like to know what everyone else thinks. I've not had a chance to bring this up with anyone and I've not seen the convo in the book referenced anywhere on the internet.

I love the characterisation of the Emperor as a masterful deceiver: he cheats the old four to make the primarchs, he lies to humanity about the the reality of the warp, he lets the mechanicum believe he is the Omnissiah, but he also ultimately beats Horus through sheer deception. That quote from Birth of the Imperium is his justification - in the face of a hostile, all-consuming infinity, he will navigate the future of his species with guile and cunning (e.g. by allowing for the existence of the Imperial cult despite rejecting godhood on the Vengeful Spirit); as Malcador comments after ascending to the Golden Throne, seemingly to Horus who can't really hear him, his King of Ages "will become anything you need him to be" to win. It's a great choice that allows GW writers to do a lot while remaining consistent and not revealing the truth about the Emperor. It also makes the figure seem really transcendent, because it puts him in a league with Cegorath and the Deceiver, some of the most influential characters in 40k as a whole.

You should add the 10,000 Custodes to your 40K number problem video. There's no way that 10,000 individuals can adequately patrol a continent sized complex in addition to working as jailors, the Emperor's personal body guard, fighting off daemons in the web way, and sending war parties out into the galaxy. There has to be at least 10x that number and the Custodes only ever say there are 10,000 of them so that the High Lords of Terra don't perceive them as threats.

In terms of scripture m, 10,000 is a symbolic number which doesn't mean 10,000 in number but something more like "a number large enough to count if you had enough time"

They are not a problem. There are only 10000 Custodes because that's how hard and time consuming is to create and arm each one of those men, but they are not the only one ones protecting the Imperial Palace, just it's most powerfull protectors + Big E's personal bodyguards. The Lucifer Blacks, a group of elite soldiers made of normal humans, is one of the other groups also protecting the palace.

This has always made sense to me. The Custodes answer to no one except Big-E, they consider themselves the true inheritors of His authority, and they view the entire IoM as a failed experiment. Them being back, with STCs to boot, with true AI is a "retcon" or at least no worse of a retcon than "some of the custodes are women now". I think its a pretty disingenuous reading of GW's statement to claim it meant "we always intended there to be female custodes" and not "from now on, the lore will be written with female custodes, and this will not be treated as a new event". Obviously they didn't exist before now, but hey, way back when, neither did the primarchs, either. 40k is built upon fuzzy lore being recontextualized and rewritten over and over ontop of even fuzzier lore. Luetin even says this in the video, did you even watch it?

I wish GW would expand the Dankanatoi better. They feel strange being a "chamber" rather than a "Shield Host". Their name translates roughly into the "bite", and it feels strange that GW is not trying to link things from HH to 40K for an organization that has vastly remained the same for 10,000 years.

@@84jesterx No one is against that idea. The problem with the idea is not new characters themselves, its the faction in which they chose to place those new characters. They could have easily put new uber units in the Sos or Sob, but they chose an off limits faction (its off limits due to entrenched lore that prevents this sort of addition) for the purpose of confronting their fans ideologically and NOT to expand the faction for enjoyment purposes.

One question I have about the Custodes, I saw it referenced somewhere that they’ve built themselves back up to their original 10,000 number since the Heresy; is that true? I kind of thought they’d be way cooler as still the shadowed meager remnant leftover after the war in the Webway. I mean only the Emperor can make them, right?

I think in the Emperors Legion it was stated that yes, their numbers went back to slightly under 10k. That was before the Khornate demon invasion
