Hope you noticed one thing that the live action missed was that Shanks saved Luffy SWIMMING, so he doesn't have any devil fruit power, I've seen many new viewers think that Shanks is a DF user and that's how he was able to "control" the sea king. It's understandable the way they did it because of production and filming limitations, but its an important piece of information that got lost in that scene of the live action.

i don't see how showing Shanks swimming would be a budgetary issue , i think they just believed that viewers would question him swimming over there that fast . Which led to its own set of problems and questioning , like everyone asking "where did that boat came from" ?

@@ZarathosDaimaoh i think it will be harder to have real Shanks actor in the water while they are also including the Sea King with CGI, prob most expensive than just dealing with the CGI of the monster, but the most difficult thing is a real person trying to float vertically using only his legs, he is supposed not to have an entire arm, and the other one is holding Luffy, even olympic altheles need to wave their hands a little to float on that pose, there's also a funny meme of shanks because of that, how was he floating 😂

idk if this is true but i think it was a safety concern, thats why they used a boat. what i do know for certain is that the luffy not wearing sandals in the LA is also because of netflix safety regulations and what not

It's funny you liked Nami's introduction being her tricking the 3 guys in the boat like in the live action, because that's her actual introduction in the manga, they just randomly inserted her into all the earlier scenes for no reason in the anime.

I thought it was a tribute to Oda wanting Nami to be the first person Luffy met. With Nami being the first strawhat shown with shanks in the color page and like the early drafts of one piece with Luffy with Silk in Romance Dawn and the other version with a blue haired girl.

The difference they made with Zoro with live-action and anime is that, in anime, Zoro is really a happy guy at the start of the series, there's a reason he rarely smiles or laughs now. In the live-action, he's already a serious guy.

Oda had been writing this story since he was a child - he was inspired early on and ran with it, building the world and ideas around it over a long time. His early one-shots circled around this setting and world and characters. There's many versions of Luffy in his stories that eventually just became the Luffy we know and love today. Also, he's always had the ending in mind while making his story - and he's great at foreshadowing and retconning story points to make it flow well. He's a very, very good writer and a very good mangaka, too.

The One Piece anime is actually not a 1:1 adaptation of the manga, though it remains fairly true in most aspects. For instance, the first chapters of the manga were actually Luffy's backstory with Shanks when Luffy was a kid, then went into the story with Alvida. Another example: the manga went into Zoro's full backstory while he is being strung up in the Navy yard, where-as the anime only briefly touches on it at that point and waits to do a full reveal quite a bit later. Also, the bits of Nami stealing from Alvida or being in Cpt. Morgan's base were also completely anime only. If I recall correctly, Nami was SUPER popular at the time when production of the anime began (I'm pretty sure because the Arlong Park arc has recently wrapped up in the manga, and I'm not sure it's possible NOT to love Nami after that point), so the studio decided they wanted to include her character in the anime as soon as possible. This is why you see her skulking around mostly while she hardly has any speaking lines in those first three episodes. So when you're doing your analysis on Oda's writing and thought process, please keep in mind that the anime isn't the original text from Oda but is itself another adaptation, albeit one that sticks much closer to the original source material yet still makes a few changes here and there.

I think what you’ll find surprising with Oda is that he actually planned a lot of this stuff out. Some of it he hadn’t figured out yet obviously, but when you look back there isn’t that many plot holes which is kind of surprising for a series this long.

It’s interesting to hear you guys talk about and praise the structure of early one piece since a lot of people’s biggest complaint about one piece is the slow start that doesn’t have a clear narrative/plot hook to it. For the record I agree with you guys and that I love the way early one piece just immerses you into the world and characters gradually but I’m not sure if it’s only because I know where everything is building towards that I can appreciate all of those little details. I’m curious if you guys having watched the live action before this is also letting you guys appreciate the early story more than say if you went into early one piece completely blind

@@vignesh2421 eh i won't say you're entirely wrong but I think it's overblown. People just don't like Syrup b/c it's Usopp focused and for some reason lots of the fan base thinks Usopp is the worst Straw hat or don't like him until his more major moments later on (if you know you know). I think the people who strongly identify w/ Usopp early really like Syrup and instead say that Orange town as the worst pacing early on. Personally I think it's a toss up between either of those arcs in terms of pacing, that's not to say they are badly paced, just that of the early arcs one of the HAS to be the worst paced. Honestly it's hard for me to decide which is my least favorite since I like them all so much.

One thing interesting for you to know is that in manga when Luffy grew and was about to leave his village in a boat he punches this monster far away. It appears at opening music. This monster attacked everyone who tries to leave that bay. Its kind of funny. This monster are named Lord of the Coast. LOL!

Something i think is important mentioning and also comes across as a great curiosity is that Oda had One Piece all planned out, the story was meant to take 5 years however he explained that many ideas would pop on his head and the characters he created would start to write the story for him, it has been now 25+ years and the story is better then ever! So one thing that Oda knows from the very beginning and has kept in storage for all this time is actually the ending itself, which we are now approaching. Can't wait for you guys to catch up and ofc follow you on the greatest adventure of all time!

One detail about Shanks that i really love is that when the bandit gets shoot it cut back to Shanks and he's expression kinda reads like sad or disappointed.Shanks doesn't want to fight the bandits, that's the point and even when he end up fighting them for Luffy he is not happy about it. Now for the trivia: 🏴‍☠One Piece at a time🏴‍☠: One thing about Oda confidense in the world is that for most of his life he has wanted to be a mangaka and had some plan of "a pirate manga" to the point that at the age of 17 his first one-shot won an award.

I get the impression that Oda planned the main points at the beginning and worked out new ideas in between as he went on. I think he planned the straw hats, the main enemies, the main conflict, and the end point of the story before entering the Grand Line. But then he came up with a very large amount of new characters and crazy explanations, and decided it was a good idea to take his sweet time flashing out all that.

Very interesting analysis, guys! Just to slightly clarify some of the stuff you address (without spoilers, obviously), Oda DID have some of the story planned out from the start. But as the story progressed, he ended up adding some extra elements he found interesting, which eventually helped it grow to the epic (and still ongoing!) tale it became today. That being said, I imagine your future discussions will become several times more lively than they are now! 😉

Hmm its quality gets better as technology does but, the animation doesn't rly go above long running TV anime of its time does outside of very big moments. But early few years of OP before first big quality change, they did do alot of cool basic but cinematic effects and shot choices like other mentioned the monochrome and sound cut/fading away with zoro vs mihawk, but when they start stretching it out like in dresrossa it became moving manga mostly when it rly caught upto the manga ,with alot of long moving stills panels and standing around talking but also there was just a shit ton more talking in OP after thriller bark imo. Then rly it actually kicks up alot more often in Wano with different line work to reflect ink paintings and hype up the longest arc Oda was probs most exited for.

I get that even in the manga they tried to hide Shanks' badassery in his introduction for plot reasons that'll come later but they overdid it in the LA. The only part where it was hinted was when Mihawk said "such an unlikely place for a man of your stature", which a shitton of people overlooked even though it was coming out of Mihawk's mouth just because he looks like hobo instead of an extra chill guy who is way too humble considering the kind of guy he really is 💀

I don't know what kind of rumors you heard, but the animation is only gonna get better from here for a LONG time 😅 It's not just the first arc. It continues to improve for hundreds of episodes before it starts taking a turn for the worse (if we're talking about the general standard, ofc individual episodes have differing levels of sakuga and all that 🤭) and then gets to even new heights after an arc or two of more questionable quality, all the way up to current episodes. So while I don't think there's any issue with being prepared for the worst, there's really no reason to worry about it much :) Unrelated: I love that you immediately spotted Usopp's dad 😊

Oda has a lot of stuff planned out. For example he has sketches of the crew from before he had even finalized Usopp's design, and it contains a crewmate that wasn't introduced until chapter 442. It's missing only 2 of our current crew members but it has 2 characters that aren't on the crew, but who may have actually been the early drafts of those crewmates.

The anime is way more entertaining and more interesting than the live action because the anime describes who their facial expressions and the drawing is really detailed and good

One thing to remember is that back when the anime started, One Piece was still planned to be a 300ish chapter series. Things have changed and expanded since then obviously given its like 75-80% done at chapter 1000. So when the live action had somethings different or included it was done with hindsight. Some things were changed for pacing but there are something in it that are accounting for aspects of the story Oda hadn't thought of yet back in 1998.

Regarding Episode 2 reaction; if you remember in the OPLA Episode 1 in the bar scene when Luffy and Koby were talking Luffy was telling one of his plans in which he was going to catch a bird and land directly in the Navy hq in the shells town.

Small changes of animation and color gradient and design. Around episode 205 it will change to a widescreen. The colors will be brighter and the animation gets cleaner. Around 495, the animation gets more cleaner. It will remain like that until Wano Arc at episode 891

The animation literally only gets better. The first large jump in quality is between ep 400 and 500. Emphasis on large jump because there are small changes throughout that aren't very noticeable, especially if you don't look back and do comparisons. Then another I think around the Zoe/Whole Cake arc then a super jump in the 900s and then brought in multiple famous artists and animators from all throughout the industry to do different episodes and they are similar but it's basically a whole new show. Then goes back to the new baseline. It's beautiful btw

Fun fact: Oda loves dragon ball so much and I learned he took some inspirations from that anime and used it in one piece. Like some of the one piece intro music has similar elements to what dragon ball did. I found this out by watching a youtuber who is a fan of a different anime. I just thought that was interesting and cool that Oda was such a fan of dragon ball and the creator of it that this inspired him to use some ideas from it in one piece. I think thats really neat.

I think it makes sense with the Naruto problem. It was because the mangaka wasn't even expecting it to actually sell at the beginning. In vol 1 of the manga, he even said that originally Naruto was going to be just story about a ramen shop, but then it changed into something completely different.

I feel like a thing you mentioned is another reason why it will make sense for you to read the cover stories when you get there. Some major parts of the live action have some sinilarities and differences from some scenes only expouned on in the cover stories. But you don't see them in the anime. They only have one cover story panel per chapter so you don't have to read much.

I don't remember the animation actually "falling off" I mean it was never JJK tier, but I don't remember thinking the animation was ever "bad" (well there is a part that has quite bad animation in the far future but is because the animation style changes completly). What I like of the animation is that all the characters are a lot more expressive, I feel a lot more the sadness of luffy crying in the anime than in the live action, which makes sense since real people's emotions aren't that visually visible.

36:42 Hayato Date, The Director of Naruto had 3-4 amazing animators/directors but animation takes time and Naruto was a weekly show, so what he does is he allocated them on the important moment episodes and rest of the episodes were mass outsourced. That was his way of producing anime, just for example most of pain arc's episodes were outsourced just so the two key episodes look amazing. Those key episodes were 166-167.

it's important to note that this is extremely early in the manga/show and a lot of the details of things like abilites, the world building and even some of the character traits aren't fully fleshed out. at this point in the story, the general idea was simply "devil fruit users can't swim". it's not until later that this gets changed into devil fruit users losing all bodily strength. this slight inconsistency is something that the live action did a good job to rectify, and it shows that the showrunners are actually paying attention to these details.
