Luffy being a rubberhose style cartoon makes a lot of sense. You're right that things lately were super serious. Depending on who you talk to, this likely started around the time that we had Merry's Viking funeral. After that, we had horror and then the Celestial Dragons. There were still moments here and there, but it wasn't like it was back in East Blue. What I love about the lanterns floating up in the sky and Luffy hearing the voices, is he's a god hearing everyone's prayers for liberation, and then him revitalizing himself. We say this back in Skypiea too when Luffy was fighting Eneru, and all the Skypieans were praying to a god they hoped would hear them, to protect and liberate them from Eneru. We see this on and off throughout the series, including when Luffy was fighting Doflamingo.

It's never been confirmed, but I personally believe that Luffy's Devil Fruit can actually allows him to draw power from prayers and wishes. There seems to be a point in most arcs where people put their faith in and believe in him, whether it's direct or indirect, and then Luffy manages to perform a miraculous feat. Like when Luffy destroyed Enel's Raigo when the Skypieans prayed to god or when Luffy almost destroyed the Noah when Fishman Island sided with him.

so its not really explained but luffy's power isn't actually being made of rubber, its a side effect. his real power is basicity 'freedom of movement of his body, which in practice gives him the ability to stretch and shape his body. thus his awakening allows him to freely do the same to his soundings, just as dolfimingo's awakening allowed him to make strings. however unlike dolfimingo, luffy's also extends to other living things which was why kaido was streaching like luffy was.

The whole laughing thing is probably the side effect of zoan fruit awakening. Luffy's like that normally, but in a serious fight, he doesn't laugh like he does now. During impel down breakout, we learned zoan fruit awakening can rob the user's sense and make them more of the animals the fruit is based on. I agree and I was on the camp of loving the goofiness of Gear 5 and not believing that it takes away from the gravitas of the some of the important story moments completely. Than anime does a better job at handling gear 5 flow that Oda made in the manga to keep it goofy and wacky but serious as well (1074 encapsulated this so freaking well). To me post time skip the stakes got higher for the story so it's been more serious. Luffy struggled so badly during Marine Ford and made gear 4 which is goofy in its own right but a more serious and hyper focused form to handle larger threats so he doesn't continue to lose those loves. If you look at gear 4 Luffy is locked in and serious but with Gear 5 you see him smiling and being goofy like the Luffy from romance dawn and onwards. I think its gear 5 is a good mix of serious overlaid with goofiness that fits Luffy perfectly and makes sense narratively for his character. Luffy is truly free and with that freedom he will free others like he always does and get them with his contagious smiles. Great video much love to fellow One Piece fans and Goda.
