His balloons, bells, ufos, airhead, half of his first attempts at fighting crocodile. He's a goofy guy and when you give him access to all of that with no limits, you get an even goofier ability. It still fits with the idea around mythical zoans having unique properties, and even katakuri's fruit being a special paramecia. It is purely the fault of the fans for expecting Luffy to become an edgelord I feel, even if that's what every other anime does. I am personally glad, because Luffy is not generic and this is the full extent of his abilities he's been honing throughout the entire series. If I watch all of Naruto, Dragonball, or Bleach there's no surprise or impact to the transformation. Sure it's cool, but it's just the status quo, something stronger will need to happen or whatever. Luffy will find a creative way to use his gear 5th.

we might of already seen a move from gear 5th, red hawk. i think Luffy can control his temp using his skin in a new way. but like a rubber band it heats up when pulled but cools off when slacked so luffy calling red hawk red might be a sign that he has a blue hawk also, but its like opposite of red were he stretches to you and pulls himself to you and freezes you. so gear 5th would be red and blue him switching temps fastly to keep from burning and freezing for to long. so through breathing he will be able to heat up and cool off by changing his skin to breath more or less or its heat conductivity or something like that. kind of like when you blow out with your mouth wide open its more heat then when you blow out with a more closed mouth. your the same temp inside but it feels different in temp because the enough out put and rate has changed so yeah. -shrugs- idk just an idea i liked. where he would breath fastly and cool his body turning his main body blue and cold as ice and whips his arms around lighting them on fire and he could blow on his arms to switch his fire punches to ice and like turn his body red like a more heated gear 2 and he could breath fire when his body is red and breath ice when his body is blue. and he would just use the difference in temp from his main body and his limbs to keep him self from burning or freezing to much or for to long.

gear 5th has so much potential to draw from. There's still the techniques from lucci and his crew. There's conquerors haki which we've only see the most basic form of. There's luffy's nervous system which could perhaps be affected... maybe we'll even find out that the rubber insulation can help him think faster, a perfect myelin sheath for cells, improving his reaction time to a faster opponent. There's observation haki and also just simple observation, which perhaps he could integrate, like a rubber man brain point. There's the possibility of learning to use his body like a slingshot, not just when projectiles are fired at him, and focusing a gear on ranged combat. He could learn from usopp, there. There could even be a gear devoted to reducing the elastic force allowing him to stretch and change his shape without being forced back into his previous shape by the elastic force. Edit: or he could work more on his homage to ace, and develop a form that uses fire more. Or, perhaps best of all, he could develop a gear that's all about combo attacks, and play the support role with his crew

To expand on the idea of electricity that i always had. My idea for a future gear was an electric Luffy. What i mean by this is that taking inspiration from how Minks use static electricity to fight he can harness that without harming his body thanks to the insulation from the rubber just how his elasticity prevents his heart from exploding in G2. His looks wouldn't change much except for the electricity around his body and his hair raising up a bit due to static, making him looks cool and a slight nod to SSj2 since Oda is a fan of DBZ. Of course this would be based on the nervous system by boosting the electrical signals making giving him an overall boost similar to what Killua does with his electricity in Godspeed mode or more recently Ultra Instinct Goku, moving without even thinking. It would be an internal change causing his opponent to underestimate him seeing no visible change but being surprised at the result like Blueno, Lucci and Doffy did. This combines several tropes of the Gears, taking inspiration, being rubber preventing harm from using the gear, using a system of the body, being unimpressive to the opponent causing them to underestimate. The "routine" to summon the gear could be to inflate his palms like two balloons and rub them to harness the electricity (keeping a bit of Luffy's goofiness) then somehow absorbing the electricity.

Stretch a Rubber band it gets warm = Fire Expand Rubber (Think Balloon) = Electricity Compress Rubber = Cold Prediction... Gear 5th deals with compression with a cold or ice theme. Maybe Luffy can learn how to use electricity from the Minks and since he conducts it, he wont be hurt by it plus it links to one of the Gear 5 theories as electricity links to your nervous system and he can speed up his reflexes by doing this. I'm sure Luffy will eventually use all the gears together, but it would probably be called overdrive mode, or something like that. That actually seems like the perfect way to fight Kaido turning into a giant rubber man with all 3 gears working together. If he activates his awakening, and it affects the world around him he'll come up with a different naming scheme for it. I think if he gets a fifth gear it would probably be something like the nervous system idea. Another idea is he could pump air into his pancreas, or whatever to break down poisons since he gets poisoned so often.

I personally would love it is they implement comedy into the gear 5th. Like you said where he can become anything, I think it'd be so cool if he becomes like a balloon animal. Whenever he can tie himself up into something. Therefore, he can copy really any zoan type (excluding Marco's ig) by just become a balloon animal of that version. I say this because he could become a dragon allowing him to fight kaido equally.

Another system I haven't seen mentioned here is the endocrine system. If Luffy could control or improve that, its effects would be like Ivankov's Horm-Horm fruit, but solely for Luffy's benefit.

What about the digestive system? If the technique that allows you to freely change the shape of your body is applied to his digestive system/stomach, he could activate Tank Man without needing to get diabetes. Besides, Luffy HAS been shown to potentially possess this ability in the past.
