That's something that I've always been a bit annoyed with the trope where a character is revealed to be a chosen type. Like, the power that you have just so happens to be the legendary power, or you were actually in a bloodline of a powerful family. It's one thing when it's made clear that the MC is a powerful, chosen type (like Jojo or Zelda), but it's another thing when the story sets up the expectation that the Mc is just a normal person that has to gain their power through legitimate means, only to later say that they were always meant to be great.

Eh Idk Man, I feel like Luffy has always been special, Like literally from the very begginging I feel luffy was clearly set up to be a chosen one, I mean hell By loguetown smoker outright Said it was as if destiny was on luffys side, The point of the whole scene with the lighting and execution and resemblance to Roger was screaming Luffy is special, I feel like it's always been the people that interpreted luffy into being just another guy who worked hard to get to where he is but that's never been the case, he's a special guy who's worked extremely hard to get to where he is, one piece has never hid the fact that you need both, just being special isn't enough is literally the whole point of the Sabaody to Marineford saga but you also Need to be special which Was said throughout the literal rest of the series

Being lucky isn't the same as being the chosen one. Zoro is lucky as well, to the point that a cursed sword chose not to cut him. But we know that Zoro isn't special in any way and is just working really hard. Same with Usopp being lucky, but not special in any way. Literally nothing was hinting at Luffy being the chosen one, aside from The Will of D. Which was proven time and time again that it's not a direct power up. Aside from maybe luck, since Buggy is pretty lucky as well.

S-cells to me is feels like a way for Toriyama to explain something that people didn’t like about Goten and Kid Trunks, who achieved Super Saiyan relatively quickly despite their age of peace and no need of having new super Saiyans come up. I love Toriyama, but I feel like he does plenty of retroactive writing due to how forgetful he is

I actually really hate it everytime some kind of destiny gets pushed onto Luffy's story because it contradict his own aspirations. Being a pirate represents freedom to Luffy and being the pirate king means being the most free, but if everything he does is somehow dictaded by "destiny" then he was never free to begin with

I think Luffy works way better than the others. It's still frustrating, but while Naruto and Goku were all about working to become stronger on your own merits, Luffy was never really about that. Luffy was basically always just an absolute monster in a sea full of normal people. And while he still struggles and uses his creativity to stay ahead of enemies, the story is never really about Luffy fighting people as much as it's about the struggle around these cities and what it means to finally take these bad guys down. You're not cheering on Luffy punching Eneru into a bell because it's especially difficult for Luffy, you're cheering him on because it's satisfying to see everything come together in a way that takes this arrogant prick down. It also just kind-of makes sense when you think about it? While it's not always the most sensible, Luffy IS based on The Monkey King from Journey to the West, who is a Sun God. It's basically right there in the name and in what he aspires to be. So having a Monkey King stand-in have this big lineage that literally ties back to the Divine with all this goofy BS genuinely does make a lot of sense. And hey, the Marine Base's HQ does have someone based off of The Buddha, too, so that makes perfect sense as a major antagonist down the road.

I agree for the most part. Reckoning Luffy's fruit to make it a zoan fruit who is named upon the son god Nikka, feels totally unnecessary to me. Maybe there's a good explanation to it but even then, it creates some problems. You are right, The only thing I could think of though, Is that Lucci is a intuitive man, they even ordered him not to ask or infer anything about his mission in recent chapters, if that gave the order to the cp9 then they could risk him knowing something Im would be upset about, and likely executed for, Which is what vegapunk is What I think is being hunted down for. And when it came down to it they had no choice but to order cp0 to do something because the risk of the Gum gum awakening would outweight cp0 awareness.

Luffy is not a chosen one, he is the one that twisted destinies designs the same way Bilbo in the Hobbit twisted fate when he happened upon the one ring. Neither Luffy, nor Bilbo, were the intended recipients of their fate. They took it upon themselves by pure chance. And as for Luffy being a figure of prophecy, as far back as Fishman Island, with the mention of a JoyBoy and Madam Sharlie's vision it was incredibly obvious to wven the most braindead viewer that Luffy is "that guy." That was way back in 2011-2012, anyone who waited 10 years to complain about prophecies and destiny is dumb as hell.

Okay I'm actually glad this was not the case, with the newest chapters of OP after Wano. I'm glad all our negative thoughts and asumptions about Gear 5 were wrong. Luffy is not Joyboy incarnate, he's just symbolically what "A Joyboy" represents. Somebody who's willingly a free spirit, that wants everyone around them to be free'd. Be ti from tyranical governments, or as simple as freeing slaves. He isn't a chosen one, but he's... let's say, "a Hero of legends", not exactly a prophecy neither a Destiny thing, just the one rightful hero we were all been waiting for. I think we all also overlooked the fact that the Emperor/Haoshoku Haki ("Conqueror's Color" if you will) is the most rare type of Haki, that only one in a billion gets, and Luffy happens to be walking towards have the strongest of them all pretty fast too. Also how he learned Haki so fast. Though you could also say... its poetic in a way. Think with me: - Fruits comes from people's dreams and imagination. Nika Nika have the power to ltierally turn imagination into reality. - Haki comes from people's will, and the will overtrives imagination, which is why Haki is stronger in the OP world. The ones with Haoshoku Haki can strive as the holders of the greatest willpower, to take down easily the others with weaker willpower. Luffy, the future king of the pirates, will have both the greatest willpower and dream. Its really fitting! Specially in a world that its so imaginative, crazy and goofy as One Piece. Giants, dogs that can scratch to absurd lengths, floating islands in the clouds with even water and rivers there. Its super fitting!

Don't forget that he was the closest in power/ability to Frieza of anyone after he'd recieved a zenkai boost, yet he still fell short. It's the culmination of both which eventually brought the transformation out of him.

No, toriyama retconed that. Now what makes someone a super saiyan is how many S-cells they possess. If Goku didn't have enough, it didn't matter how hard he trained, because genetically he wouldn't be able to become a Super Saiyan. It's the reason Trunks and Goten were able to unlock Super Saiyan so quickly compared to others of their race, with very little actual martial arts experience

It's a classic battle shonen problem of the authors making each new villain 2-10 times stronger than the previous villain. Then the author has to give the protagonist new power-ups to win, each one less well-thought out than the last. Wano Country has been such a disappointment to me. I'm glad to see someone tackle the problems of the Nika devil fruit reveal in a rational way.

I always saw Haki as just a way for Oda to run away from the fact he made logias absolutely broken. But this Gear 6 bs was just absolutely unnecessary, I was really looking forward to a cool, imaginative awakening to the Gomu Gomu Fruit but instead got an awkward and dumb retcon. Look at conqueror's haki for example, we're explicitly told that someone with it is a candidate chosen by Heaven, and the MC Luffy has it, Luffy screams to the top of his lungs that he's going to be the Pirate King and the story itself frames that he's destined to become the Pirate King no matter what, in a way Luffy is considered Royalty with being the grandson of an admiral and his brother's father being Gol D. Roger, it's practically no coincidence that Luffy ends up being the one counted on to save the day and also does so, and also Shanks gave Luffy his straw hat in hopes of Luffy surpassing him

While Garp is a pirate he's still Luffy's grandfather and was the reason he gets his devil fruit powers, and we see Garp rather early on in the manga in the chapter 92 cover of Diary of Koby-Meppo. So it's pretty clear that Oda was going to have Garp and Luffy related at the start and not retroactively.

Deku having to get creative because a) super strength is not that versatile and b) his body can't handle his own power was my favorite aspect of the manga. And while I'd have enjoyed a journey of Deku finally being able to use 100%, we just skipped that in favor of the Plot Fairy giving him 6 powers that he can mix and match to reach Beyond All Might level. The fact that Deku is this broken and can't just one-shot Shigaraki makes you question how All Might ever took down All For One alone *twice*, with the second time being after he gave up his quirk. imagine a story progressing to the point that the main character of it became the strongest... its like literally every series like this ever. Just because you don't like the plot type of a main character being the hero of his story and world by becoming strong by the end when he started out weak or struggling , doesnt mean it ruins the character or the story. All of them were the natural progression of the story and could be seen coming years before they happened at least in some way. Deku could never be the number one hero is one for all always busted him every time he used it. And All for one and Shigaraki are so over powered that even with all his quirks Deku isnt going to win easily. You can even use real life analogy of pro wrestling. When any wrestler starts a career they aren't the top act and then usually nowadays when they do become it people boo them because they aren't the low level under dog anymore. lol. I would like to comment on your critique of destiny in Naruto. The problem I have with this discussion, especially when it comes to Naruto is that it is always taken out of context. Firstly, concerning the reincarnation bit, I would like to ask; what exactly did it mean to be the reincarnate of Ashura? The cycle of violence and destruction has been propagated throughout the entire story of Naruto. Endless wars fought on repeat as a result of the hypocrisy of humans (ninjas) The cycle of conflict between Ashura and Indra was a microcosm of the state of the shinobi world, a cycle that repeated itself over hundreds of years, and this was a cycle that Naruto sought to find an answer for after his conflict with Pain. This also changed his motivation for becoming Hokage. Naruto's vision of becoming Hokage changed from a simple need for acknowledgment to a desire to end a cycle that perpetuated itself for generations, a cycle that he himself was a part of. This was why Naruto declared that he would die trying to save Sasuke, because if he couldn't even save one man who was the embodiment of the hatred of the shinobi world's broken system, how exactly could he do anything about the actual shinobi world at large? This also brings us to Naruto's battle with Neji. Neji's belief was fatalistic, as you put it and it was born from his circumstances. It was quite simple: You cannot change the circumstances you are born into. Naruto validated his own belief by defeating Neji using the power of the Nine-Tails, an entity that was almost a curse, and used it productively. He also validates this at the end of the final battle with Sasuke. If Naruto WAS a hypocrite, if DESTINY WAS RIGHT, then the final battle would have ended with either Naruto or Sasuke dying, but that didn't happen. Hashirama was a great Hokage, but ultimately he was still a failure in Naruto's eyes because he did the one thing that Naruto resolved himself never to do, which was to kill his friend. I think, when it comes to the theme of destiny in these shows, you have to take each case individually and look at the themes carefully and in their proper context before coming to these conclusions.

You act like Naruto didn't train his ass off so that Kurama's help would actually mean something. He was always Asura's reincarnation, but he didn't get the power that came with it until the last arc of shippuden. Yes, he had a lot of chakra, but he struggled with academy level techniques and chakra control BECAUSE he had too much. Naruto doesn't beat Haku, Gaara, Neji, Kakuzu, or any major threat in the show unless he trains and masters his abilities. I hate when people defend characters like Asta, Luffy, or Deku, saying that they got where they were through hard work primarily, even though its the same thing with Naruto, and yet they give him slack. None of the characters I mentioned are carried by hard work. Deku can clean beaches for years but he's not beating Todoroki or Bakugou, or even Shigaraki without one for all. Asta is fit as hell and really strong by himself, but he's not contesting Dante without anti-magic. The powers that these characters are granted help them win because it amps all the stats they gained from the hard work, but they don't get there without the powers. If you gave Luffy at the start of the manga gear 5, Kaido would still bully him into the dirt, but Luffy as he is now still gets bullied into the dirt without gear 5.

So....this is wrong. I can understand why people would have this impression upon first seeing the fruit and reading the lore but now that we've had some time to think about that it hasn't gone against the themes of One Piece nor has it made Luffy less of an underdog. In fact all this G5 reveal does is highlight just how much of an underdog Luffy actually was. Reason being that it basically confirms that the Nika fruit was NEVER meant to be used for combat.This devil fruit isn't legendary because it's powerful. it's legendary because it's the most silly. It's a comedy fruit. It was never supposed to be for fighting. Ace even points this out in Luffy's flashback when they're training together. So the fact that Luffy made it all the way to Yonkou status with a devil fruit that was never meant to be used for the purpose of fighting says a lot about Luffy's creativity, work ethic, and willpower. Because in ANY body else's hands this devil fruit would have been worthless. Which is why no one awakened in it 800 years. The awakening of this fruit isn't even all that impressive when you look at it objectively. It's not doing anything too crazy nor is it allowing him to completely overwhelm Kaido. Without Luffy's strength and Haki this awakening would mean nothing. Which is why Kaido points out that the devil fruit means nothing. It doesn't automatically make you the chosen one destined for greatness. The only thing that matters is the will. The Haki. So no I don't think it makes Luffy a hypocrite. It's a 100% earned transformation. Though I will agree that the changing it to a mythical zoan and all the Joyboy lore added to it definitely get on my nerves as I think it was completely unnecessary to add to his character. but none of it is contradictory. Not even to the themes. It's just that Wano itself specifically was about flipping a lot of common themes on their head. Like how Usopp normally had to learn a lesson about learning to risk his life here in Wano he talks about clinging to life even if it kills him. Where Zoro once had to learn to use his blade to protect instead of destroy here in Wano he's reminded that blades are tools for killing at the end of the day and you're supposed to use them to slaughter your opponent. In WCI we learned of Sanjis' kindness and why that was more important than being a tough violent soldier yet in Wano he ends up becoming that exact cybernetic soldier he didn't want to become. Wano purposely reversed a lot of the themes in One Piece and I think this was intentional to challenge the ideas of the story. At the end of the day, Luffy was always an underdog in the sense of whether or not he could really step into the role of Joyboy. Because no one else could have mastered this fruit. No one else could have climbed through the ranks of piracy with an ability that was never inherently dangerous or meant for combat in the first place. So no I don't think this is a huge negative for the series but I do wish it could have been handled better or differently. But people should really stop acting as though this ruins the story. It does not.

The thing about One Piece is that we still don't understand JOYBOY, DF AWAKENINGS, NIKA, and how one's haki affects their awakening. Also, we don't understand why Luffy awakened the fruit after so long. Even now, I still feel like G5 is a retcon but we still need more information to piece together why all this happened. But one thing Oda confirmed is that Luffy isn't Joyboy, but Joyboy was someone who awakened the fruit 800 years ago and Zunisha was feeling his aura when Luffy awakened because they can sense people's "voices". I might not like how it came about, but I like G5, it's perfect transformation for Luffy, I just wish I was built upon well instead of coming out of nowhere. The biggest reason is that there is a interview where Oda himseld said he could not think of a way of Luffy to defeat Kaidou. But here is the solution, a new form that resolves some problems. In another interview that you can easily find, Oda says that he created Gear 5 because he wanted to make the battles fun again, since Luffy battles were becoming to serious. If Oda had always planned this form, he would not need to come with this explanation, because he admits that he created this form to have fun again, not because he planned long ago. Also, if Luffy fruit was always a Zoan, why did his fruit hurt him? Why would his hearbeat be screwed by Gear 2, 3 and 4 if Zoans do not damage its user? Only Paramecia (Mansherry fruit can drain her lifespan, while Law can literaly die by the Ope Ope no Mi, while Zoans never damage the user bodies). The fact that Oda did not plan Gear 5 that earlier is not a demerit. Oda came up with the Supernovas as he was writing Sabaody, he came up with Dressrosa because he needed to create a country that suited Doflamingo, etc. So he is incredible in writing all this stuff and made it belieavable, but the only think he truly planned was how the story would end and what the one piece is.

Actually you're thinking of the type of Paramecias who produce things. There's 2 sub types to Paramecia(technically 3 but I count that as another form of producing): Body Modification and Substance Generation(and "Environmental Manipulation" but they literally generate something TO manipulate the environment so meh). Body modification(like Daz Bones(Mr. 1), Buggy, and even Mr. 2 Bon Clay's fruit. We've also seen that Paramecia strengths are ALWAYS ACTIVE. When? Mr. 5 (Booger Bomb guy) is immune to all explosions. the way i see it, gear 5 could've only worked with luffy. on the surface, it was limited to only making someone rubbery and stretch. if it was anyone else, they would've just called it a dud and not even try to improve upon it. but luffy is different in that he is extremely imaginative in how he applies his limited devil fruit. he's always coming up with new ways and new techniques to stay one step ahead of his foes. the gears is manifestations of luffy's boundless imagination and combat adaptability. the elder stars didn't think anyone could awake the fruit but they underestimated just how imaginative he is. and gear 5 can be considered a representation of luffy's main character trait: freedom. he is all about just being free. and now he has a power that allows him the ultimate freedom to fight as he wants. but that's just my take on it.

Luffy's G5 situation is such a weird predicament to me. On one hand, I'd say the thought that Luffy's triumphs and the dedication into his growth being invalidated by destiny was a near unanimous feeling in the fanbase. On the other, it sorta always made sense and was there in front of us for a long time. Something that's been a distinct part of all of Luffy's victories is the sheer amount of luck he has. His recklessness usually gets him into "game over" situations and through sheer dumb luck, he gets out of it. Almost like a magic wand is being waved around him so he can keep going. Luffy's will has never been a problem. He's never had true doubt in his choices on his warpath except for one time, and most MCs get through rough spots with equal parts will and luck, but Luffy gets through everything with 100% will and 200% luck. Another distinct aspect of One Piece that's been built up throughout the series is the amount of mystique and intrigue revolving around the origins and mysteries of DF and the world as a whole. The sun god Nika was mentioned in Skypiea, along with 3 other gods (or 2, I can't remember), the World Govt. has been covering up the history of what was apparently a giant war with an advanced race of beings that were nearly extinguished yet their wills live on in D, the many fantasy races seem to have ties to a broader connection and system in the world, hell, Brook confirms that there's an actual afterlife with his DF, and speaking of which, DF have been theorized to just be thoughts come to life, existing in a dimension removed from everyone else and so their users are cursed by the ocean itself, the mother of all things natural, to never truly coexist with the natural world. The idea that the fruit chose him can also be argued that it wasn't entirely destiny, too. Like it might more so be that he was just the most qualified person in the world for the fruit. He was born with the same exact personality as Roger, lived a life of freedom, and has the guts to dream big and the will to chase said dream to the ends of the earth, so it makes sense that a fruit representing a sun god of freedom would be drawn to him over time, ESPECIALLY since zoan fruits are said to have minds of their own that merge with the user. tl;dr One Piece is such a wacky world with so many layers of fantasy and mystery that I'm willing to suspend my disbelief about Luffy being a destined hero and just roll with it, it just makes me connect to him FAR less in the long run.

You didn’t even mention Ichigo because he is nepotism incarnate being the combination of all the races and a candidate for the soul king and ruler of all reality. What all of these characters have in common is goals that transcend their genetics. Naruto’s dream to be hokage pushes him to find answers to human understanding and peace. Gokus mastery of martial arts and self development. Luffys desire to liberate people from oppression. Ichigo always protecting his friends and family. They all have godlike powers but real human goals and aspirations. That is the important part. Not the nitty gritty of how their transformations work. Their character is what gets us to care about their stories.

I think the complaint is more that you like the character to be an underdog rather than the mangas being hypocritical. One piece and dragon ball never claimed their protagonist to be underdogs in fact luffy was always explicitly stated to be a special character with insane potential so gear 5 is pretty much in line with luffy’s character. He is the son of dragon and grandson of garp, has the will of d, sworn brother of the son of the pirate king. Even early in the series he’s always shown to be one of the more powerful characters that is only outclassed by characters with more experience but in marineford the war shifts to the marines wanting to kill luffy because the world govt notices his insane potential.

I think we've got it wrong and it's actually still the gum gum because Oda said directly that zoan fruits cannot affect the environments yet Luffy can stretch the ground, I like the theory that people are mistaken. I think in one piece it is somehow different. Luffy wasn't born to be nika, but became him by eating the fruit. He does what he wants and it's more like destiny warps around him. His motivation an desire to become the pirate king is not correlated to him being joyboy. He just does what he likes and what maybe makes him king, and gets sh*t done alongside by accident. I don't know why people still don't acknowledge the gear 5 problem. I don't care if it is a chosen one trope, you can do it well if possible. My problem is that it goes against Oda's previously established ideals, namely, the concept of Inherited Will, an idea that a person's dreams, hopes and ambitions can be passed down to others and those people will carry these forward to the next generation. Luffy getting the fruit basically throws all that out the window because you no longer have anyone "symbolically" inheriting another person's will. You have a dude that literally got the powers directly for no reason and it goes against inherited will. But my main itch with this thing is that Oda didn't really have to call it the Nika Nika fruit. He could have just kept it as gum gum fruit. And the fruit's awakening is just Luffy's free spirited, imaginative nature manifesting in the unlocking of its powers in such a goofy way. Gear 5 could have just been the Gum Gum fruit awakened instead of the Nika Nika fruit. It would have felt WAY more earned and still fall within the themes of the story as well as those theories where people connected each gear to a body system (gear 2 -> circulatory system, gear 3 -> bones, gear 4 -> muscles so gear 5 was gonna be brain and the nervous system).

yea but its not the properties of rubber, all the stuff you list is the headcannon the community made to make his powers make sense. when it never made sense. may be your opinion but I believe that it was luffy's sheer creativity that made those abilities work and his hard training fighting gods that can awaken such forms of haki AND awakening a devil fruit from wish we know is a IMMENSELY rare skill only a hundred devil fruit eaters have ever achieved. With all of the forshadowing from skypia, with how his powers work, and with how the story is told; I don't believe that its a complete betrayal of his writing but a great capstone of luffy's hopefully final form of the series. with how creative one piece is, having the protag's power being based off of his creativity I think is great from a story telling perspective. I HONESTLY think people hate the prospect of destiny strictly because Naruto, DBZ, BLEACH and others usually fumble the bag with the trope making it worse so when you see it again most people have a negative connotation from it.

i haven't finished the video, but i went into some digging, but naruto never declined destiny was not real, he simply said that he would not let that stop him being hokage, like you said neji said that destiny was absolute and there was no changing it, but from we see within the anime, destiny is heavily tied with choices the characters make within the series. examples is that naruto being the reincarnation of ashura, he was not the reincarnation of ashura from birth, apparantly ashura chose naruto as his vessel probably after the pain arc which is one of the arcs that develops naruto's writing the most and really tests his resolve to keep fighting even after his master had died meaning naruto's choices affected if he was going to be ashura's reincarnation or not. another time is when he is prophecied to be the child of destiny and he was prophecied to lead the world to chaos or reunite the tailed beast and bring harmony, even destiny allowed naruto to choose his choices. naruto vs neji showed naruto essentially saying that destiny isnt an absolute concept as its heavily affected by the choices the characters make in life. also idk why naruto being the son of the 4th hokage means something, just because he was the son of minato doesn't mean he is hokage material, even after being taught by jiraiya and kakashi, naruto still had to exessive studying for him to be even a candidate for hokage.

You are wrong. That is also true for Naruto. It was hinted at from the very beginning that he was special. However, there is a difference between special and being the chosen one. Once you become the latter the tension in the story dies because you can't really lose anymore. Plus, being special for Luffy was always shown as a personality thing, not strength. Still that is *special* and not chosen one. Law is special, the whole worst generation are special, but no one is chosen. Even if you make the argument that the Nika Nika fruit chose him because of his personality, that throws everything out. He becomes a chosen one again.

He is the chosen one, not because he was born that way, but because his mentality and his dream aligned with the gum gum no mi, which in turn chose him because of his way of thinking and his drive. He is still the one that created the gears out of his imagination (except gear 5) and Gear 5 itself is only strong if the user is creative enough with his powers. It was simply a power up of convinience that gave him more freedom to do his imaginative attacks. I understand why some might not like it, but imo it is the one of the best things that happened in One Piece. It was so fun and embodied everything I liked about Luffy.

Choosen one trope is boring thats why everyone hates it. Luffy lost to Kaidou again and afterwards gained gear 5 all of a sudden without even knowing it. Gear 5 introduction was an asspull. He didnt develop it during a fight and thats one of the reason why some people hate it. If it were introduced a bit better then it might not be as badly received

I like Gear 5th a lot. It fits Luffy's character to let his wildest dreams come true. This transformation had to be earned. It wasn't like he ate this special fruit and it propelled him into being Pirate King. Luffy fought and bled time and time again with this supposed "useless" fruit. Luffy would have died multiple times if it wasn't for the people around him and his crew. Luffy was dead to rights defeated numerous times and this legend would have to find another person to bring about this supposed new dawn. This transformation is fun and it totally fits Luffy as a form. Him just getting some crazy edgy new form wouldn't have felt true to the character in my opinion. Plus, we are still learning what this form is capable of and it doesn't seem to be unique to just him. The WG getback is LONG overdue and that's what I wanna see, these assholes finally get worked.

I think you get some points wrong. Your using both dragon ball and one piece as a same example as naruto, when the truth is the opposite. Neither Goku or Luffy are writen as weak/loser characters who become strong through hard work unlike naruto, they both were introduced as monsters who were stronger than most of the cast. It’s literally his awakening, it’s literally the payoff to all the work he put into his fruit, haki, and body. Dragonball was always about inheritance and was always deterministic in many senses. Goku was stronger than his peers as a child because he was special. Training amplified that. Vegeta in Saiyan saga would win a Goku who trained like hell while Vegeta was sleeping, but he was attacked by multiple people and outwitted many times in order to finally beat him. In Frieza saga, Frieza is simply born with astonishing power, he is a type of alien overlord nobility, one born into privilege and his power was inherent and genetic. The androids were built to be powerful and they overpowered the Z fighters who have been training their entire lives quickly, Cell took this to 100 as he was comprised of the best genes from the strongest warriors. You get the idea this keeps on and on, ones race, birth and potential decides more in dragon ball than training or anything else. The story at times tries to tell us about the worthiness of effort and good habits, but i think subconsciously Toriyama did not fully believe that, thus deterministic elements are apparent all over the place and he places much significance in one's birth (example Gohan never really being the work horse hid dad was when it came to training and he achieved much more with minimal effort simply because he was a hybrid and one born with incredible potential and good genes to boot). This is an outlook of life that is actually quite natural, raw and real and that's why i believe subconsciously it resonated with so many people.

Personally I think that Gods in one piece world are just people that did legendary things and became revere by the common people (irl ex: Albert Einstein, Michael Jackson ...). But there is a destiny theme trough out the series, so people who dislike destiny I guess they will not like that part of the series. Great video btw.

Oda really like to play with the words like "God" or "gods" in OP for some reason. Sanji talked about God in Logue Town, Nami prayed to God once, Enel declars himself as a god and being "god" in Skypiea is basically being a king, Celestial Dragons are supposed to be the gods or false gods, Brook prays to the "gods of music", CC is seen as a God by the people of Punk Hazard, the will of D is supposed to represent the enemy of the gods, God Usopp appears, Big Mom is supposed to represent a god of destruction or something, Emu is supposed to be a evil god or something and now Luffy is also some kinda of a god. u clearly didnt understand any of naruto. naruto never stated that hard work beats talent he just said u can change ur destiny and he was right. the only way naruto being the asura reincarnation helped him was in the war arc, the whole point of this reincarnation cycle was for the reincarnations to always fight with each other, this was shown thru indra and asura, hashirama and madara, and even naruto and sasuke b4 the end of the story. the two of them were literally destined to fight with each other but naruto broke this cycle of hatred, the only way the reincarnation helped them was the so6 path powers which only caused them to fight even more. naruto broke this seemingly never ending cycle which proved neji wrong. neji also proved himself wrong bcus he sacrificed himself for hinata not as a member of the branch family like he said he would have to but as a friend which showed how neji escaped his own destiny aswell. Furthermore, naruto being the son of minato literally didnt help him at all, ppl still hated him and he still couldnt do ninjutsu, the only thjing that helped him was kushina's large chakra pool but that didnt help him much either since he couldnt even do a single shadow clone. naruto had to work hard for everyhting he got, even the so6 path powers bcus hagoromo himself even stated that it was their hard work that led to them receiving this. if naruto and sasuke didnt work jard to get stronger they never would've gotten those powers. so all in all naruto did prove neji wrong and he never betrayed his character, anyone who genuinely believes this hasn't watched naruto properly

If he just had G5 and not properly trained his Haki he would be fodderized by Kaido. 1)Luffy has never been portrayed as un underdog 2) the fruit it self had been used for 800 years, and luffy awakened it for his stenght and training, not becouse of destiny 3)luffy without haki would still have been stomped with g5, it does not sinlgehandly manke him overpowered 4) luffys g5 fits him perfectly thematicaly, it represents full freedom, while the basic fruit represents a sort of restricted one, which trough struggle and training, awakens to give the highest level of freedom to the user. 5) it was kind of set up since g4 which already has fire tematics on his concept, but also acts as an intermediate state between the restricted capabilities of rubber, and the absolute freedom of nika. The only problem i have with gear 5 is that nika the god of the sun and freedom wasnt forshadowed properly, but its just a name thing, the fruit could have been called the toon-toon fuit and it would have fit perfectly anyways

I still think changing the fruit's name was odd but overall it didn't change the powers or Luffy overall he still trained hard and overcame a lot of challenges to awaken his fruit plus his awakened powers doesn't just instantly make him some op god that one shots kaido it only made his rubber powers stronger and more flexible plus being able to change his surroundings to rubber. its no different to doffy with his awakened fruit i feel like everyone just instantly thinks that luffy becomes this overpowered mc when he awakens but even the fruit alone couldn't defeat kaido so he also needed his advance conquerors haki to have a chance to even harm kaido which i think was good cause it cancels out luffy just getting and instant win button so he had to train even more
