Luffy's speech to Sanji is one of the moments in the series that never fails to make me cry. Luffy's emotional intelligence is one of the greatest qualities of his character. The way he's able to understand that Sanji is putting on an act and that he's truly in pain the entire time he's hitting him is a testament of how well he knows his crew. And to those bringing Zoro into this as a way to discredit Sanji's actions - ANYONE in the crew in this situation would have been forced to do the same to protect the crew and their loved ones. Just imagine if Zoro's master and dojo in the east blue were being targeted just like the Baratie. All of a sudden the conversation becomes very different. No matter how beloved Luffy is, there's seldom he can do to prevent an assination on the other side of the globe. Regardless of that, Zoro is very emotionally intelligent himself. He and Sanji are very close despite their animosity towards each other. I am positive he would have empathized/sympathized with Sanji's decision. Especially when it's being valuidated by Luffy's decision NOT to fight him. This is completely different from Usopp's decision to fight Luffy based on ego and differing opinions. He was never being held hostage against his will.

People gotta think about the situation at that time, 1. Sanji’s hands would blow up if he left the island. 2. Zeff would get killed if sanji refused to stay, Luffy can’t turn the ship around the help zeff while they already picked a fight with kaido and now big mom + germa, by the time they finished, probably everyone at the Baratie would be dead 3. Luffy would be fighting big mom with half his crew(tbh it was the relatively weaker side other than jinbe, Brook, and sanji maybe Pedro) he has no alliance with him at the time. 4. Luffy used most of his energy fighting cracker who isn’t even a first commander, so fighting big mom would be impossible with luffy’s current power 5. He would be fighting germa too, since the wedding was between germa and big mom, germa would join bigmom in fighting Luffy and half his crew 6. Luffy would also have to be defending his weaker crew with sanji against all of bigmom + germa’s army, they would 1000% have die 7. Bigmom and germa only wanted sanji for what he was told, so sanji making the decision to leave him self behind for the crew was the best option. (Considering the ussop vs Luffy fight, Luffy left ussop behind during water seven due to ussop decision, so sanji probably thought that would work in his case) Literally there is no outcome where telling Luffy to help him would not end up in Luffy and the crew getting killed. The best option for sanji to at least having a chance of survival for the crew would be to drive them off ultimately sacrificing himself considering the other option would be fighting bigmom and germa with half the crew.

Some people just make the assumption that because sanji attacked luffy, zoro would attack sanji, even though the character relations would clearly make the situation more nuanced than that. And its not like i'm saying nami isn't loyal to luffy or something like that. All of the straw hats at this point are amazingly loyal so i don't imagine either of us here are disrespecting nami, but we just know that she has less emotional control in situations like this (of course nami and zoro are both great characters). Take for instance when bellamy was beating up on luffy, and nami could hardly take that level of disrespect being shown to her captain. These episodes were running while the olympics were going on. Japan had a lot of companies spend a lot of money on TV spots between events commercial breaks. So, for all the sponsors and such, Toei had to cut up the episodes multiple times. That explains all the cut screens.

It’s not just about it being a combination of reasons. He’s looking at his hands because I think in his mind, his hands are the most valuable part of him to his crew, not his kicks. if he goes back to the ship and is unable to cook, obviously everybody would love having him there, but to himself he’d have lost his place on the crew, so if he left just to have his hands blown up, it’d be kinda pointless. He’s not just going with the strawhats for friendship’s sake.

I think Sanji's actions are fairly understandable given the context, but his ultimate mistake was: he doubted luffy. Being in the crew for so long and seeing how they ended up coming through every possible situation, he should've known luffy always finds a way, no matter what, and no matter what he did, luffy would never let him go.

Sanji is trying to protect them by cutting ties because if he gets married while still being part of the Strawhats, they will literally be Big Mom's subordinates whether they like it or not and he doesn't want to drag them into something he knows well enough Luffy will never ever do. He would rather suffer through the burden alone then make his family (Strawhats) suffer with him. Somethings from your past you just can't control when they come back to haunt you, even when you know you have friends who will go to hell and back for you, you don't want them caught up in your mess so you carry the burden alone in hopes to not drag them down. There's nothing selfish about what Sanji did...😕 like at all.

Sanji was sacrificing him own freedom to save his friends and dad, if that's not loyalty what is? Luffy understood it perfectly even without knowing the whole situation cause he knows how Sanji is. And if Zoro were in the same exact position, in the hands of his abusers and an emperor, with people lives on the other side of the globe on the line, he would have done the exact same thing. He also wouldn't have done a damn thing here. Luffy could have defended himself if he wanted, Zoro wouldn't have interfered with that decision, and he also knows Sanji wouldn't suddenly do a 180 out of the blue. @@travisealy3512 true, and not saying I agreed with him, because I doubt that was the point of his scenes in water 7, but it was also about his views on his self worth that were built up for a long time in the series. He knows he isn't strong, and he kept failing in water 7, so that cut him super deep, not because being a straw hat is less important than how he feels, but BECAUSE being a straw hat is so important to him. He felt like he couldn't contribute anymore after the situation escalated. And all of this was made harder on him when he had the news about the merry, which the straw hats all acknowledge as a whole crew member, was told to him. Usopp had a lot of attachment to the merry and looked after it a lot. For multiple reasons, he felt like if they were willing to just cut loose of the merry, which is something/someone usopp cares for deeply, they would probably cut him loose too. Of course this does escalate too far and he does apologize, but its not like his actions weren't understandable

All of the emotional buildup lead to what was him practically lashing out. And he did pay for that. For one, he fought luffy, he knew he would lose He then goes to understandably beat himself up over it for the rest of water 7 and enies lobby, to the point of rejecting the idea of his own identity being worthy of going with the others to save Robin. And then he finally brings himself before the others to apologize
