Yeah, Oda did a masterful job writing the fight, the escalation of it is perfect, from small talk to a disagreement, then to shouting but it keeps going till they start saying things they don't want to say and ending with a straight up physical fight it's literally how a real life fight would go. And then the VA job nailed the interpretation... man one of the most well executed moments in One Piece no question.

it's not just that usopp has been thinking about leaving for a while, he clearly was not at the right state of mind. the ordeal with aokiji, the franky family kicking his ass not once but twice, and now the ship being unable to be repaired finally made him snap. he thinks he's so weak and cowardly he would just drag them down since he was beaten by some nameless punks so easily. that being said, a part of me couldn't really blame him.
@Iqnacio.
@Iqnacio. 2 жыл бұрын
I would also add the fact that, to make it even worse for him, he was the one repairing the Merry till that moment but, since he isn't a shipwright he did a poor job, that's not his fault of course, he did his best but again, he's no shipwright. The thing is, in his mind he would probably still be blaming himself for not "even being good enough to fix the ship", so his inferiority complex would be even bigger.
@benl.4577
@benl.4577 2 жыл бұрын
@@Iqnacio. Exactly. There were a shit ton of factors that were weighing him down that made him finally break. Another one might be that because he's weak, part of him would think that the only reason he's in the crew was because of Merry. Because of how Luffy talked about getting a new ship, he got the impression that since Luffy got rid of Merry so easily, they might do the same to him one day.

This fight scene felt really relatable to me, because when I was younger I also felt like Usopp a lot of the times. Never really good at anything, constant efforts to help the group left unrecognized, feeling like I'm not enough and just waiting for the day where my friends finally ditch me, being so afraid of getting hurt, I started to distance myself. Always keeping my dear friends who I'd do anything for at arm's length to protect myself. But then getting even more hurt when they wouldn't ask me to hang out with them or not trying harder to convince me and I'd then assume that they didn't like me anymore when in reality it was them who weren't sure if I even wanted to be there. This vicious cycle of miscommunication and pain brought my friendships to its limits at some points. Naturally, like Usopp, I too had to get over those feelings of inadequacy and it took a lot of help and long honest talks with my friends to get over it but the fear is still inside me. Especially now with everyone gone to different universities and less time and opportunities to hang out, it's hard not to believe that the friendship is fading. Luckily whenever we do manage to all hang out it's as if we were never apart but that fear is probably going to be there forever and I just need to live with it. Everybody has their inner sabouteur and mine's a little louder than other people's I guess

A lot of people forget this, but they're all so young. I mean Luffy and Usopp are only 17 years old. All this shit they've suffered, it was bound to come out eventually... and we get one of the best written pieces of media imo. It's just so... raw...
@ronnie-sillyme0560

A lot of people point out Usopp struggle. But it's both luffy and Usopp. Usopp is finding it difficult to find his role within the crew. Chopper and nami are on his level. But, their roles are critical with in the crew: Navigator, doctor. With out a role he feels he doesn't contribute. And luffy is starting to learn how to be a captain. Up to this point, he has been a friend. Leadership is very important. And Usop and the entire crew need to understand they boarded Luffys ship. They willingly chose him as captain. So they must respect his decisions. It was wrong of him to casually talk about replacing Merry, but the decision stands. He doesn't need to explain anything.
@UltimateGamerCC
@UltimateGamerCC 2 жыл бұрын
Usopp was beyond out of line, he didnt see how much Luffy fought for Merry to get repaired, he only saw the decision made out of his acceptance that Merry wasnt fixable, so Usopp thought that Luffy would replace him the same way, which is messed up to begin with.
@rafaelandrade7627
@rafaelandrade7627 2 жыл бұрын
Perfect comment, you got right to the heart of the argument. Luffy's decision triggered an inferiority complex that had been growing inside Usopp. During the fight with aokiji you can see the exact moment where he starts to really question his place in the crew. Usopp's mistake was his failure to grasp how difficult it was for luffy to make that decision
@Humble197

Luffy made some serious mistakes as well its why Sanji hits him at a certain point. A leader needs to make sure the people working under him are good and he screwed up there hard. You misunderstood what Oda was going for there.

Welcome to crying central. I swear that Oda requires our tears as nourishment. Fun fact about Franky's voice actor. He did such a bang up job voicing Mr 2 Bon Clay that Oda NEEDED him to voice a character he was making for Water 7. His design and attitude was tailored specifically for the voice actor, in hopes he'd get him to come back. It worked out in Oda's favour.

Unlike every other member of the crew, Usopp didn't have a strong parental figure in his childhood, only his dying mother telling him to be good. That's the reason why he had to fake or borrow courage because he barely knows a thing or two about fighting for what matters, and this scene is an example of what it means to stand up for something to him because not only he sees himself in Merry, but also it was from someone very dear to him. Also, this is the only episode where we saw Usopp's lethality when he is really driven to do what is necessary for him. Imagine if he had access to real and deadly weapons.

SPOILERS BELOW (Feel free to remove if its too much) Lets not forget that from Usopp's perspective, based on what he saw in Skypea, the Merry is _actually_ alive, or at least conscious & sapient in some way. So he's not defending _just_ a ship, but an actual living being (from his point of view). And thanks to Franky later on, WE KNOW HE WAS ACTUALLY RIGHT.

Ussop leaving the crew (plus ussop vs luffy). their next downfall is at the sabaody archipelago arc. where the strawhats were completely annihilated by kuma. its their first defeat. fighting a warlord, admiral, chief captain and pacifista one after another and being wiped out like that gave them a wake up call that they are not yet ready for the new world. their next downfall is when sanji left the crew. and they need to fight 2 yonkos at the same time. current timeline.

Yes, Usopp is being incredibly selfish and stupid here. Yes, Usopp is a broken and insecure man that fears for his life every day he is with them. Yes, Usopp clings onto Merry and relates to her struggles because he feels that theyre both getting too weak to carry on (not to mention its the only thing left he has to remember Kaya by). It all ties into eachother. We're seeing the worst side of Usopp here because, just like Luffy and everyone else, they feel like their world is crumbling down before them. This arc is wonderful at showing that, even though they are great friends and strong as hell together, they are still just people that make stupid choices from raw emotions. Ive said it before and ill say it again, this is peak fiction storytelling right here.

When i first watched this episode im so damn angry about usoop selfishness, but when i knew that {spoiler} Merry is actually alive, literaly alive, makes usoop looks more reasonable. But yeah still selfish.

same, Usopp was completely over the line, he didnt see Luffy fight with the shipwrights to get Merry fixed, being told that it was impossible and that they couldnt make another Merry. all he saw was the byproduct of Luffy's acceptance of the facts and his decision he had to make for the good of the crew, but Usopp instead thought that he would be replaced just as easy, not understanding that Luffy doesnt abandon his friends. and i'm not gonna lie, i'm still angry at Usopp, but i think at this point it's really disappointment that i feel, that he would think so little of Luffy.

The biggest problem I see with the duel they fought is that Usopp fought harder than he ever did for his own life or for the life of his friends for the boat he got from the girl that used to give him boners (which Merry was given to Luffy, not Usopp). I personally believe that if Usopp had ever fought like that at ANY POINT before this, he would've commanded some respect, been viewed as a strong threat, and not had this massive identity crisis nor gotten robbed. He went toe to toe with Luffy and fucked him up quite a bit but he LOST to the FFF? (Franky Family Fodder). This is the ONLY problem I have with this plot point, everything else amazing.

Well, the difference is Ussop ALWAYS fights that hard. Its just that Luffy was the only opponent he was ever prepared for, he knew all his strengths and weaknesses from the time they were together, he took hours to prepare the battlefield to his own liking, and had access to his entire arsenal. He was also able to use his range to his advantage by forcing Luffy to come to him. He also knew that Luffy wouldn't actually kill him, and thus not only used that as an advantage, also meant he had ZERO fear at this point, meaning his main disadvantage was also out of the picture. Rarely does he get that situation anywhere else. The FFF basically ambushed and jumped him at close range, in which we all know Ussop has always been pretty bad in a melee. He wasn't prepared for a fight at all, didn't know what the weaknesses of his enemies were, and was of course fearing a lot for his own life at times (albeit he does proceed to ignore that fear and go straight for the FFF to get the money back, despite knowing it'll might likely end with his death), and that goes for the MAJORITY of his fights. But whenever you see him actually fight in long range, which Oda doesn't like to write often, he's as cracked as this, like in the Enies Lobby Confrontation and that time he sniped Sugar and Perona. He's just absurdly good in a situation that doesn't come up in One Piece often, and thus everyone always perceives him as weak.

I really hated Usopp back then because of this, really selfish, but it's important for character development

I get that this is a reaction video, but sometimes (e.g. Luffy and Ussop argument) you gotta just let it play without pausing or speaking over it. You're ruining your own experience and missing out on actually experiencing the moments in real time...

Usop is my least favourite of the strawhats. Especially after those episodes. He left the strawhats, attacked Luffy with explosive shit and dials and was mean to chopper. :/
