Presumably Erim/Iris still comes back as Lufia in the future, so I would say the alternate ending is a bit less sad. I'm not sure how I feel about it, though, considering Maxim and Selan's deaths are part of what made the game so impactful for me back when I played it for the first time as a kid.

Ngl for as bad as this was, at the very least it gave us an ending where Maxim and Selan survived. I hate endings where the hero's reward is death. I understand WHY they die, and I respect it, but that doesn't mean I like them.

How to find the alternate ending?

You have to play the game through a second time. You'll only see the original ending the 1st play through and the alt. one after that.
