Lufthansa Reduces Selling Price of Six Airbus A380s

Lufthansa will receive a lower sum than originally projected from Airbus for the six A380s it will sell back to the manufacturer. This is due to quote unquote "storm damage not covered by insurance." Thus, Lufthansa will receive €13 million less for the double-decker jets. Let’s look at this story in a little more detail in today’s video.

What are the chances of those to return to service.. Like slim to none.. Well preserved ones in storage are finding it nearly impossible to find new homes.. Qantas recently lost another one to the scrapper..!!

Just a funny thought, perhaps just keep them in the fleet for longer. I'm sure there're A380 enthusiasts out there who will go out of their way just to fly on them. 😉 Especially if the seats in premium classes will get upgraded to the new sets, there'll be a market for that too! 😊

Maybe BA should reconsider increasing the number of 380s the 12 that they operate are extremely busy and I'm sure they would be a success for them on alternative trans Atlantic routes.

I'd say it would make more sense for BA to activate their 777X options than to acquire more A380s. BA purchased 18 but they have options for 24 more. This would allow them to more adequately fill in the capacity void left by the huge 747 fleet they retired at the start of the pandemic.

The A380s suddenly became useful as the huge increase in passenger traffic with none of the ordered new jets yet available to service them, just made this choice to operate them a no brainer. A little profit for flying the A380 is better than no profit at all.

I think Lufthansa is getting more than a fair deal from Airbus. The 380 is gaining in popularity and looking at Emirates I don't know whether selling these aircraft is such a good idea.

The video is lacking some details here. The A380 flights to Boston and JFK are offered in summer, whereas the A380 flights to LAX and BKK are on the winter schedule.

That's the tragedy of the A380, leaving such a nasty aftertaste with insurance coverage or lack thereof. Risk taking involves acting quickly sometimes, and we won't know how quickly they've acted towards that.

As stated in the announcement, Lufthansa will remove the A380 from service as soon as it has an alternative in place. Most western airlines are looking to remove their A380's from their fleet so the price advantage will be to those who move first.

hail damage on all six A380-800 . . . please explain . . . just one of those rare coincidences, don't think so . . . the hail damage on all six A380-800 airframe can be repaired & put back into service, albeit with other full service carriers . . . right price from AIRBUS (buyer) perspective, should be no more than €283 Mn - €296 Mn (approx) or any buyer for that matter . . . regardless of Lufthansa's order for additional brand new A350-900 wide body jets . . . acquiring the 20 brand new A350-900 means lot more to the German full service carrier than selling six A380-800 slightly below prevailing market price . . . the present demand for A380-800 by full service operators is mostly seasonal, like the middle of the year summer period . . .

Nope. The 380 is actually terrible for cargo which is exactly the reason they just get scrapped than turned into cargo planes. Too heavy relative to volume and the upper deck cannot be removed or use for the cargo.

They use one of them for testing so might be getting spare parts back for that. And probably selling on spare parts for other customers when their existing fleets need replacement bits.

Two reason They can offer to buy back A380 and instead sell A350 to them. Plus these planes can then be used to sell spares to Emirates or others. Such deals happen in business world where one party agrees to buy back their old product if the customer agrees to buy the newer one.

@@parvez_uddin_emon It's pretty simple. The 380 is extremely complex and expensive to operate. Air India doesn't have any of that to be able to handle it profitably. If LH didn't find the type profitable Air India certainly would not.
