The Phantom is my childhood hero! Used to spend summer holidays in Leuchars in Scotland in the 80's with relatives and we were on the flight path for them landing, those memories will never fade.

I used to help my grandpa with his farm work in the summers and his farm was under the flight path of the F-4 training course. This and Area 88 made me want to be a pilot but my eyes didn't make the cut. I can still tell an F-4 apart from other planes just by the engine sound that's like a blowtorch.

My brother had Thanksgiving out at a campsite for my family a couple of years ago and my sister complained that it wasn't "Traditional". I mean, what the hell is more traditional than a feast in the woods of Virginia? I don't think she'd like the eel pie and whatnot, but anyway it was funny. We've had pizza for Thanksgiving prior to that, so I don't know where that protest came from, but anyway, Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I had a Snickers bar and a pack of Nabs today (and a lot of beer(s)). It's all good.

I honestly thought as I watched this, in what real scenario would German F4's face off against Mig29's? 2 different eras, surely? Then I read Germany did not retire its last F4's until 2013. You learn something new everyday...

Saw a F4 come in once that was having trouble off the Ranger at Cubi PT Subic bay Philippines. Heard his engines and they sounded way off. Pilot tried to catch a wire on the runway (yeah they got wire on the runways too) and missed and hit hard and then slid off the runway into the grass smoking. Bravo Zulu to the Pilot and Rio for not ejecting and saving the plane. Walked back into the P3 line shack and said hey an F4 just crashed and no one believed me until they heard the sirens. I was young then

@@IrishCarney A short combustion chamber gives the engine better power to weigh ratio at the expense of billowing smoke when going full kahoot. Advances in material science allowed for higher compression ratios, and (hence) higher combustion temperatures made it possible to clean it up without sacrificing too much performance, so it was deemed that the smaller visual signature was worth more than a small performance boost.

"That flak was for me. I don't like that." That was funny. I love the f4. Dad was a crew chief working w/f4s, and I had a f4 edf (foam) rc jet. It flew like it was on rails. I always liked the airframe on an f4. That was a great battle. Keep it up. I enjoy the vids. My vote is f16 outnumbered by migs or something an f16 could handle more than one of. I like the hairball mayhem in this vid. How you're always having to remember to keep an eye out for other bandits besides the one in front of you.

9:20 - engine fire, no no no. A very long time ago the original Aim9 was all about heat. or Thermal energy. It's a lot more sophisticated after 40 years. I have no idea what DCS models, but I do know that the modern aim9s are all aspect - they don't need engine heat - though that helps. If you look at the thermal radiation coming off an aircraft - and we have - it's all over the spectrum. The later models of the Aim9 can track the spectral refection of very specific signatures. Hell, the Side has been able to do head on shots for a long time now (hence stealth).

(Read in michael pritchard’s voice) Overwhelmed by the surge of Soviet fighters, the crews aboard NATO sentries orbiting high above and far away from the battle became little more than spectators, as the skies over Western Germany descended into chaos. With closing speeds measured in hundreds to thousands of kilometres, NATO and Warsaw pact pilots alike found themselves at close range, the realm of heat sealing missiles and cannons. Radios ablaze with dozens of overlapping calls and all but cut off from AWACS control, the NATO pilots fell back on the old ways, the original rules of air combat written in blood in skies not all that far from these. In pairs, American, German, British and French pilots took on the might of the Soviet air forces in desperate high speed dogfights. Though the Soviet pilots were not trained for this kind of fighting, it is by no means easy to kill a man who does not want to die. Smoke trails and cannon tracers criss-crossed the sky, some connecting with yellow orange fireballs that turned to comets. Greasy black smoke marked their final plunge to the earth. No one would ever know the true tally of either side. A hundreds of miles per hour impact with the ground following a missile impact left Eagles, Falcons, Mirages, Phantoms and Migs looking alike. Personal claims would be overstated; they always had been. Nor would the toll from friendly fire ever be known. It is not easy to distinguish one blurry metal shape from another while fighting for one's life scant hundreds of feet above the ground. There would be little celebration at NATO and Pact air bases that night. Survivors would land, stumble from their cockpits and mechanically see to their needs, before finding somewhere private to grieve in the few minutes they'd have before the next scramble.
