I remember back in the good old days…. We would fly Syd-LAX AND it would leave in the afternoon. We got dinner and a couple of drinks in the “Smoking section” where we congregated at the end of the plane ✈️ drinking Jack n Coke and smoking 🚬, it was like being in a bar 😂👍. The best way to fly, until 1person had to release the drinks back through his mouth and nose, then he began again. 😊

I'm not pilot or aviation guy but I guess by common sense that the 100 dollars are maybe for: 1. they'll add calculated amount of fuel to carry that extra weight all throughout the flight. 2. calculated amount of hydraulic fluids that will be needed for landing for that tiny summative weight 3. tyre pressure, let say the standard tyre pressure must be 350ksi but because of that overweight they'll add 200ksi more. 4. maintenance of the whole plane for the wearing of wing, tyre and tail and such edit: again, I'm not a pilot or someone who is knowledgeable about aviation. My comment was pure common sense on my behalf and some applications of my few of many majors; strength of materials, mechanics off deformable bodies and hydraulics.

Here’s the thing. I’m a pilot. And when we don’t have accurate readings of the weight in the aircraft. Guess what. Our plane now handles differently than expected and could cause huge issues in control!! EDIT!!!!! For the people talking about the payment for extra weight. It’s not that they let it slide. But it’s that they are making you pay them for having to figure out where to put your bag to balance everything out. For the passenger weight, baggage weight throws it off more than passengers, although sometimes it will be thrown off enough to the point where they will move passengers around the plane to shift the weight and its cg. They do have ways to get your weight, such as scales in some X-ray machines, as well as your drivers license as some states have your weight on the license. Thank You to the people who are supportive!! :)

I absolutely agree that the baggage fees are nothing more than a huge money grab. However, the weight issue is real! The avg weight of the people aboard is one thing, but the weight and distribution of the luggage, cargo and animals below are a whole different beast. Its extremely important that the weight is properly/evenly distributed and/or placed as such to counterbalance heavier items such as a casket(s), equipment, etc. Weight is especially true with the smaller planes. Ive seen people have to leave backpacks and pckgs behind in order to fly. Think of places like Alaska where the small planes go from village to village with food, medical supplies or taking someone to a Dr appt. When Ive been sky diving, with just us and our equipment, its always been a big deal with how we were seated and had to be moved around a time or two to make it as evenly as possible.

Weight is crucial for flying. If more people are doing this, they're putting everyone in jeopardy, not just the bag handlers. Perhaps, in baggage, if they have a heavy bag that's not tagged as such, they should reweigh it, and pull that bag aside at the destination and after they pay the baggage fee, they will get their bag.

If an aircraft has 200 passengers and they assume that for example the standard weight is 75 kilos but 20-30 passengers will certainly weigh 100 kilos there will also be some with 120 and more. See, there’s that word again. Now, pay attention as I am about to explain how “AVERAGES” works in the real world… so, let’s say that you have 200 people boarding a jet, in order to calculate a safe weight that the plane can safely handle we can figure it out like this… we will say that half, or 100, of the flyers weighs 200lbs and the other half, or the other 100, flyers weighs 250lbs., give or take a few pounds either way on all 200 passengers. At that point we can safely say that the weight of ALL 200 passengers comes out to an “AVERAGE” of 225lbs. per passenger. You take 200lbs times 100 people and that equals 2,000lbs. and then you have 250lbs times 100 people and that equals 2,500lbs. That gives you 4,500lbs divided by 200 passengers which equals 225lbs per passenger. That is how they can correctly and safely say that the average passenger for that plan weighs 225lbs.

As an aero space engineer all things considered including weight distribution. However, all airplanes are designed with the minimum and the maximum capacity and most, if not all, airplanes don’t fly at their max capacity EVEN when the plane is completely full of passengers. Regarding the weight distribution and balancing of the plane luggage operators are trained to distributing the weight the best they can during the loading process. They often have a short amount of time between unloading and reloading the plane getting it ready before the next flight. Planes are designed to balance the weight electronically (like the latest military aircraft’s. Of course, weight distribution does affect many things to the plane but not as critical as many might think on commercial aircraft. Otherwise, the plane would nosedive or tail drag when passengers get up to use the restroom. We hardly have any weight balancing issue with planes 30 or 40 years ago and back then passengers allowed to have up to 70 lbs. or 45+ kilo. And, airplanes back then weren’t built as efficient as they are today. Airlines are trying to get as much out of their customers as they possibly can because they’d have to deal with their stakeholders and they’d rather deal with an angry customer than to deal with an unhappy shareholder. Now, regarding this young lady she has learned to cheat probably at a young age and this has become her daily habit as she is shrewdly displaying here. There are countless cameras located throughout the airport especially around the counter areas yet, she pushed her stupidity beyond her limits. She probably denied everything EVEN when they showed her this video anyway.

Pilot here. When baggage is thrown on to baggage carts it randomizes the weight distribution of that baggage weight quite evenly, and again it’s mixed up when loaded into the plane. You are averaging out the weight across that CofG station. For Passengers, they can only weigh so much before they end up needing two seats and at that point that averages out to 2 people, each with a seat, so even weight dense individuals average out based on the room they need. Luggage is the same deal, there is only so much weight density achievable in a suitcase and in carry-on and still be movable by a normal person. This is why averages work out so well, there is an upper limit to how much flesh and bone can fit into the seats available and how much weight a person can reasonably pack. Then you throw in kids or light packers and tada Averages are the only way forward. In this case they will use a standard Male/Female - Summer/Winter weight for calculating CofG, and will use a standard baggage calculation as well. Simple, effective. Accurate…enough. Where weights and CofG gets critical is with cargo operations as the weight density of cargo is vastly higher than people. Cargo containers can fill the entire airplane cabin. Humans can’t. They will weigh the cargo containers and make sure the weight distribution is correct for CogG because only cargo can really add significant weight outside of the central baggage load station that would be used for passengers. So it’s easier to place weight at the extremes using cargo containers and basically impossible doing the same with people and baggage. So, securing the load becomes ultra important to prevent a CofG shift as well. Cheers

Absolutely not. They have no idea how much weight is going to be on the plane. They charge you because the baggage handlers have stipulations in their union contract for heavy bags. The more heavy bags they have the more likely they get injured or have some other problem with their bodies. They have to pay for medical insurance, workers comp and pensions. So that directly affects that amount they have to spend on them. It’s also way for the airlines to make more money. If it really affected anything they would have to know the weight of every passenger. And they don’t. They realistically have no idea if you’re 300 lbs or 120 lbs. they don’t know if that seat is going to have a 30 lb child or a 400 lb man. So the extra weight makes no difference at all. We’re talking about an airplane that gets lighter by 50,000 lbs by the time it lands because of all of the fuel it burns. Those extra pounds in your bag make no difference except to the people who have to put it on the airplane and the airlines who have to pay them. They’re doing it as a way to discourage heavy bags and then to make money off of people who do have them. I know because I had to fly 3 weeks a month and fly with my tools which were always extra weight. It was only usually over by 5-10 lbs. a lot of times they would just push it through and not charge me extra which didn’t matter to me because it was through my company.

Here in Australia some of the luggage converbelts actually have scales all along them so that they can get an accurate weight reading from your luggage and that is why it is safer to fly in and out of Australia. They can even get your weight. In some places. Like some of the boarding platform's.
