Prime Iniesta is deadly than any one. you can see the ball but can't touch it. he can enter in any close gap and come out successfully. his way of playing is exceptional from United fan. Two very different roles. Iniesta comes with pure midfield attacking style and is so creative on the key passes, on the other hand Modric is very well capable of holding any tempo and building up precise plays. I'd go with Modric if my holding mids are weak and with iniesta if i lack attacking forwards.

Always loved iniesta for his sportsmanship, in fact modric is humble as well. Overall iniesta seems more flexible, even playin left wing in guardiolas later seasons at barca even if he was never that fast. Playing in tight areas, first touch, dribbling, and awareness goes to Iniesta for me, but obviously shooting, defence, outside foot, physical attributes goes to Modric. Both of them extremely succesfull, if i had to choose, i could not. Legends of the game. Only for a few players you turn on the tv, only a few of them give you that much joy while watching them, everything seems easy for them.

Positions and roles are different thing, two different positions can have similar roles and two same positions can have different roles as well. Iniesta might have played on the left or as cam, but his role was largely similar, an attacking midfielder playing right behind forwards, between the opposition's defense and midfield lines. Modric is far more versatile in his role, he's a box to box central mid, he can go forward and attack like Iniesta, he can stay back and set n manage tempo like Kroos and Xavi and even act as a game reading cdm throwing in tackles n interceptions etc.

Both incredible players no doubt. Iniesta in his prime looked more skilful and better at dribbling than Modric in his prime (Modric very close though). However if you want to talk about who was better from an overall career perspective, you cannot overlook the fact that Modric is 37 and still starting for Real Madrid in a top European league, and even playing very well too. In fact, he’s been doing this since the age of 33, which was the same age Iniesta was when he moved to Japan to play in the J-League. I honestly think that this is really significant and points towards Modric being a better player/greater player. It wouldn’t be crazy to put Modric in the top 3 central midfielders to ever play the game.

Both of these players are the best midfielders. I think for me iniesta played a more crucial role as a teen while modric has maintained longevity. I’ve seen both at their best and for a long time and i’m edging it to iniesta. He was a joy to watch. A true magician and barca’s midfield really took a hit when he left. Iniesta was picked up for Barca because his talent was rare, and he had a potential to become the best central midfielder in the history (which he did). And Modric was that born talent until he turned 30 and that's why I find their comparison just laughable. People started "comparing" him to Iniesta only after 2017 and that's because Iniesta's performances started declining and Modric finally became world class. But even in 2017 and 2018 almost no one said Modric was even close to Iniesta in terms of their career performance. Then Modric straigth up disappeared from football until 2022 and somehow that dribbling against PSG and pass against Chelsea made him be on par with Iniesta even though Ini was obviously better until that season? That's just funny. Modric only had 3-4 world class seasons while Iniesta was THE best CM in the world for nearly a decade and I bet he would have continued to be top 5 until at least 2021, if Barca hadn't gotten into the hands of corrupted Bartomeu who straigth up desroyed Barca's strongest line up in history

The reason is that he is more of a complete player and has been consistent for several years even up to the age where other footballers would have retired or played in a less significant league. I remember how 33 years old Ini outpaced a young and prime Azpilocueta when he was one of the fastest right backs in teh world. And his acceleration was almost as good as Messi's. His quick thinking was insane, and Modric hadn't developed that quick thinking until he was around 32. Iniesta is better in absolutely every way besides defending and energy. And that comparison was just stupid. Yeah, Iniesta stopped playing after 33, but Modric was barely a footballer until he was that age, while Iniesta had won absolutely everything he or anyone else could. The man down playing style of Modric and Isco is the reason Real started collecting UCLs like crazy. No offense to Ozil but his inability to dribble in tight spaces was the reason Real always got knocked out in the latter stages of the competition when we started playing against the solid midfields of Bayern Munich and Dortmunt at the time. Ozil had low stamina and couldn't cope with the high intensity at midfield for 90 minutes, and because those teams were so good at ball control and closing tight spaces, we got stifled at midfield. Modric and Isco allowed us not to be stifled because they have the ability to always beat/dribble past the first man even in tight spaces, which allowed spaces to open up in midfield and allowed us to control the rhythm of the game. Khedira had the same problem as Ozil, not stamina wise but the ability to manuevre space in a right game and win both defensive and offensive fouls. Its no coincidence that Carletto chose to dispense of both of them when he arrived and no coincidence that Real would go on to win like five UCLs since their departure whereas they won none when they were there. Granted Khedira was there in 2014 but he was injured the whole season and played no part really in the success of the team. I'll also admit that they were not the only weak points of the Madrid team prior to that. Other weak points were Higuain and Arbeloa. You just gotta look at Higuain's UEFA stats for Real Madrid and it will tell you all you need to know. Higuain was a good striker to have if you want to win the league. He was a very good stat padder. He'll score the goals you need against all the mid and low level teams and those are actually the points you need to win the league. But in UCL you need someone who plays well and scores against the big teams and Higuain wasn't that guy and his pathetic UCL record for Real showed. I can also remember his numerous misses in El Classico games. Arbeloa was the final weak point. I even remember a game against Dortmund where Dortmund didn't even hide that they were targeting him and just blatantly attacked only on that flank. It wasn't until Carvajal (2014) that we got a solid right back and the difference showed, coz Arbeloa ate the bench the whole season and was released afterwards. I was so happy for Madrid getting Carletto because he proved I wasn't insane. People actually used to call me crazy for saying Higuain, Ozil, Khedira, and Arbeloa were not Madrid level talents and should be sold. Especially Ozil who everyone praised and at one point people (idiotically) said he was the reason for Ronaldo's success (Ronaldo is the reason for Ronaldo's success). Carletto gave me vindication because he saw exactly what I saw and what he daw lead real to the UCL title.

This is not comparable. They are both equally great in their own rights. Also, Iniesta played a much more advanced role than Modric. The better comparison would be between Xavi and Modric. But again, there, it depends on the style of football team you want. If you want a possession-based team, then you would choose Xavi to be your playmaker. But if you want a more physical team, capable of a quick counter-attack, then you would chose Modric. There's a reason why Real Madrid won so many UCL in the last 5-10 years. That is thanks to probably one of the best midfield trio of their generation in Modric, Kros and Casimero. I think we are lucky to have witnessed two of the best trios of midfielders in recent years: Xavi, Inesta and Busquets for Barca; and Modric, Kros and Casimero for Real Madrid.
