you forget ... i was there... lukas gave the original score for me to read/follow as i sat in the front row during ALL rehearsals & performances...buffalo seminary made this happen ...as i became page-tuner on stage @ kleinhans & lukey's babysitter for his kiddos @ symphony circle & canadian residences...being 15 in the 60's in buffalo !!!

Boy does this composer set us up for a complete and final deconstruction of the western tradition. Pulls us along for a little while with seemingly "lovely" variations with only intermittent suggestions that something is askew. And then he drops a nuclear bomb on us. I love it.

Freakin' brilliant - Phorion is an amazing comprovisation of sorts - indeterminacy but controlled within a hierarchy of structure. Foss deserves serious kudos for pioneering this new direction in music. To most it will sound like the Miles Davis free-jazz quintet stepped in at the end to add their own neo-classical coda...and that's ok!

A piece of wonderful imagination that can teach a lesson to the 'serious' sticks in the mud. A lot of fun . I never tire of this music. " For music was born to be free..."

Gran artista y mejor persona; tuve la oportunidad de verlo dirigir la Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de México y fue apoteósico. Siempre lo recuerdo como el mejor director que haya visto en mi país.

One of my favorites. Wish it would be reissued.

Seriously 9th grade? You grew up in one cultured milieu. I was listening to Aerosmith and Alice Cooper and sometimes the Dr. Demento show on Sundays when I was in 9th grade.

It still hasn't been remastered to get rid of the "fireplace" effect. Somebody needs to get off their dead A and remaster it. Tristan McKay has written an excellent and challenging book, A Semiotic Approach to Open Notations--Ambiguity as Opportunity. There's a "score" of Baroque Variations available on KZbin, and if you like what you see the "score" of Phorion, you'll love what's in McKay's book.
